Written by a survivor of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, this moving and important book examines the massive psychic trauma suffered by a generation of Holocaust survivors. It not only provides both an intimate and personal reflection on these harrowing events, but also offers an in-depth, clinical perspective on an often-misunderstood phenomenon. As a child during this period, the book begins by examining the author’s own experience as a refugee in the aftermath of the Holocaust, the psycho- logical impact of displacement after such traumatic events, and his attempt to flee its damage through medical and psychoanalytic training. But the second half of the book broadens the perspective to offer a clinical exploration of the psychic effects of surviving the Holocaust. A range of concepts are addressed and explored, from powerlessness and survivor guilt, to psychic security and recovered memories. The book concludes by examining how psychic trauma is processed, and the clinical implications for when disorders emerge and dysfunction results. An insightful and honest account of massive psychic trauma, this remarkable book will resonate not only with those affected by or interested in the experiences of Holocaust survivors, but also any clinical practitioner working with clients who have experienced this type of intense trauma.

Wounded By Reality written by Ghislaine Boulanger and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02-25 with Psychology categories.

The culmination of three decades of studying and treating survivors of adult onset trauma, Wounded by Reality is the first systematic attempt to differentiate adult onset trauma from childhood trauma, with which it is frequently confused. When catastrophic events overtake adult lives, they often scar the psyche in ways that psychodynamically oriented clinicians struggle to understand. For Ghislaine Boulanger, the enormous challenge of working with these patients is unsurprising. Survivors of major catastrophe, whether a natural disaster, a life-threatening assault, a serious accident, or an act of terrorism, experience a near-fatal disruption of fundamental aspects of self experience. The sense of agency, of affectivity, of bodily integrity, the capacity for self-reflection, the sense of time, and the ability to relate to others - all are called into question.

How many of your psychiatric patients have a history of severe physical or psychological abuse or other psychological trauma? These patients often present diagnostic dilemmas, get a variety of diagnoses, and frequently prove difficult-to-treat. They may have syndromes that are reminiscent of the post-traumatic sequelae in adults, such as physiological hyperactivity, a sense of loss of control, passivity alternating with uncontrolled violence, and sleep disturbances including nightmares. Investigating the impact of the traumatic event in connection with the development of the disorder is essential to an effective treatment approach. Psychological Trauma provides a basis for understanding human response to trauma. The consequences of specific traumas have usually been described as separate entities. This is the first book to examine human response to trauma as a whole. In this thorough study of the biologic, psychodynamic and social consequences of trauma, separate chapters explore: * The impact of separation from the parental figure on a child's development, including cognitive and neurological disturbances* The psychobiology of traumatic response* Traumatic antecedents of borderline personality disorder* The effect of trauma on the family unit* Amnesia and dissociation as response to trauma* A stress management approach that can be incorporated into the treatment of patients

Most people are aware of the Jewish Holocaust, the German concentration camps and the slaughter of thirteen million people. At the conclusion of World War II, many of the survivors of the camps came to New York, where physicians and psychiatrists worked with them to transition back to normalcy. These patients all shared symptoms, new to the medical field at the time, broadly called Survivor Syndrome and explained in the book, Massive Psychic Trauma, edited by Dr. Henry Krystal, NY, 1968. Twenty years later, Survivor Syndrome began to be associated with the symptoms of domestic violence within the home. TRAUMA & Survivor Syndrome explains these specific symptoms, differentiates them from post-traumatic-stress-disorder symptoms, and gives a case study of a child-witness to domestic violence who later, under unique circumstances, presented with the symptoms of Survivor Syndrome. Survivor Syndrome material derived from Dr. Henry Krystal's Massive Psychic Trauma, 1968. About the Author: Sherry Lewis Henry PhD, MSW is a retired clinical social worker. She was motivated to write TRAUMA & Survivor Syndrome by the desire and need to investigate her mother's murder, despite the obvious cover-up. Seeking for Truth became a healing journey, which led her to Israel. There, among Holocaust survivors and their progeny, she found peers, validation, and existential restoration. Dr. Viktor Frankl's words rang true, The Survivor's Mission is twofold; healing of man-made, deliberate trauma for others and oneself is an on-going, life-long quest. It Is Good To Be a Seeker, but sooner or later a Seeker must give that which he has found, unto the world, to whomever will receive it. (Richard Bach, Jonathan Livingston Seagull)TRAUMA & Survivor Syndrome is that Gift. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/SherryLewisHen

Psychoanalytic work with socially traumatised patients is an increasingly popular vocation, but remains extremely demanding and little covered in the literature. In Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony, a range of contributors draw upon their own clinical work, and on research findings from work with seriously disturbed Holocaust survivors, to illuminate how best to conduct clinical work with such patients in order to maximise the chances of a positive outcome, and to reflect transferred trauma for the clinician. Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony closely examines the phenomenology of destruction inherent in the discourse of extreme traumatization, focusing on a particular case study: the recording of video testimonies from a group of extremely traumatized, chronically hospitalized Holocaust survivors in psychiatric institutions in Israel. This case study demonstrates how society reacts to unwanted memories, in media, history, and psychoanalysis – but it also shows how psychotherapists and researchers try to approach the buried memories of the survivors, through being receptive to shattered life narratives. Questions of bearing witness, testimony, the role of denial, and the impact of traumatic narrative on society and subsequent generations are explored. A central thread of this book is the unconscious countertransference resistance to the trauma discourse, which manifests itself in arenas that are widely apart, such as genocide denial, the "disappearance" of the hospitalized Holocaust survivors and of their life stories, mishearing their testimonies and ultimately refusing them the diagnosis of "traumatic psychosis". Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony provides an essential, multidisciplinary guide to working psychoanalytically with severely traumatised patients. It will appeal to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists and trauma studies therapists.
