At 542 pages and referencing over 1200 academic articles, this book is the longest and most thorough resource on mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) to date. Allergies and anaphylaxis are on the rise, alongside gastrointestinal problems, skin issues, fatigue, orthopedic pain, neurological symptoms, and just about everything in between. Patients are coming out of the woodwork with chronic, debilitating, often invisible illness. Recent research estimates that 14%-17% of the population may have mast cell activation disease. Much of the medical community has never heard of the condition, and existing mainstream treatment tends to focus predominantly on pharmacological management. However, once a patient has reached a stable baseline, there are a number of other individualized approaches that can guide patients to successfully address the underlying root issues. This book includes: 1) an in-depth overview of mast cell activation disease, with a focus on mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS); 2) a patient story describing life with MCAS; 3) a detailed literature review and current hypotheses for disease origins; 4) a practical guide of clinical considerations for diagnosis; 5) a chapter devoted to comorbid conditions, including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, POTS, Lyme disease and much more; 6) several chapters devoted to mainstream and natural treatment options, dietary considerations, and strategies for holistic healing; 7) content from dozens of interviews with prominent MCAS experts, including specialists in allergy/immunology, hematology, functional medicine, naturopathy, psychology, nutrition, gastroenterology, physical therapy, clinical research, and more! Whether a patient, medical practitioner, or family member/friend, this book empowers readers and provides patients with concrete steps to move forward in the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of mast cell activation syndrome.

Mast cells are allergy cells responsible for immediate allergic reactions. They cause allergic symptoms by releasing products called "mediators" stored inside them or made by them. In allergic reactions, this release occurs when the allergy antibody, which is present on the mast cell surfaces, binds to proteins that cause allergies, called allergens. This triggering is called activation, and the release of these mediators is called degranulation. Some of these mediators are stored in granules in the mast cells and are released quickly and others are made slowly only after the cell has been triggered. Mast cells can also be activated by other substances, such as medications, infections, insect or reptile venoms. These responses, while not desirable, are made by "normal" mast cells. They are called "secondary activation" because they are due to (secondary to) external stimuli. Sometimes mast cells become defective and release mediators because of abnormal internal signals. Certain mutations in mast cells can produce populations of identical mast cells - called clones - that overproduce and spontaneously release mediators. The spontaneous production of mediators in these clonal mast cell disorders is called "primary activation". These abnormal cells can grow uncontrollably and are unusually sensitive to activation in a condition called mastocytosis. Mast cell activation syndrome, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and Ehlers Danlos syndrome are three syndromes which often appear together. On the surface they appear to be very different. After all, what can multiple allergies have to do with a fast heartbeat and a tendency to faint and how does it fit in with a debilitating connective tissue disorder? If there is a connection is there just one specific association or are there a number of different causes which come together to cement this eternal triangle? The impact of these syndromes on lives is profound not only in terms of lost working hours but of pain and restrictions which would test the patience and strength of most people. But are these syndromes a lifelong companion? Can diet influence genetic inheritance so that the propensity towards certain conditions is turned off. Maybe though, the answer is simpler than that. Could a deficiency of nutritional substances account for all of these syndromes by changing an outcome which has a knock on effect on the way the body responds downstream. All these questions are answered and more and accompanied by photos showing the impact of some of the symptoms of MCAS.The author, a medical nutritionist, takes us on a fascinating journey as she shows how simple deficiencies can account for all the syndromes occurring together and more importantly how easily they can be addressed. This is a book that can be read alone or complements other books in this series especially EDS and the Hypermobility Syndrome Diet which investigates the causes of hypermobility EDS and how diet may impact its manifestation. .
