To Build A City In Africa written by Michelle Provoost and has been published by Nai010 Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-18 with Architecture categories.

Africa's population and economic growth make it the world's fastest urbanizing continent. While some might still associate Africa with rural development, the future of Africa is, in fact, very urban. This urbanization is a huge challenge in areas with fragile institutional frameworks and chronic poverty. Many migrants moving to the city end up in self-organized settlements without basic services. One alternative is being offered by developers and investors who have designed and built new towns in Africa that are modelled after Asian and American cities. But is this really a proper alternative? Does one size fit all?00'Urban Africa' brings together authors from various academic, political and design backgrounds; as well as case studies on new towns in, amongst others Ghana, Egypt, South Africa, Angola, Morocco and Kenya. In this way, the book provides a critical narrative about contemporary 'Urban Africa' and the western world's role - if any - in the radical transformations happening today.

Media discourses always consider Vienna as a »cultural city«. This study shows how such a perception is skilfully shaped by political constructions of cultural imaginaries in and of the city. The book unveils how simplistic cognitive interpretations of culture not only define an unquestioned, reductionist idea of the city's cultural character - it also explains how these imaginaries influence the recent urban development practice in one of Europe's globalizing cities.

Gendered Approaches To Spatial Development In Europe written by Barbara Zibell and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-27 with Architecture categories.

This book explores the extent to which gendered approaches are evident and effective in spatial development in selected European countries. Beginning with an introduction to theories and concepts of gender, space and development, the book includes a brief historical review of gender in spatial planning and development throughout Europe in general, and an overview of different national frameworks in European countries, comparing legal, organisational and cultural similarities and differences. This is followed by a critical reflection on how simplifications and stereotypes of gender concepts are used in the practice of spatial development. The main part of the book offers a transnational discussion of planning practices on selected thematic topics. It starts with gender-sensitivity in urban master planning and at neighbourhood level referring to different types of planning manuals. Furthermore, the book focuses on gender-sensitive evaluation in urban planning as well as international agendas for sustainable development as a framework for a new generation of gender equality policies. The chapter authors assert that climate change, migration and austerity have threatened gender equality and therefore spatial development needs to be especially alert to gender dimensions. The editors end with an outlook and suggestions for further action and research on gender issues in spatial development. With inputs from some of Europe’s leading thinkers on gender, space and development, this volume is designed to inspire students, scholars and practitioners to reflect upon the contribution that gendered approaches can make in the various fields of spatial development and environmental planning.

Upscaling Training Commoning written by Ana Džokić and has been published by Jovis Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06 with Architecture categories.

Upscaling, Training, Commoning features a lively account of the 10-year exploration by STEALTH.unlimited into what it means to engage with the glimpses of a world that has become conceivable in the cracks of the Global Financial Crisis (2008). Ultimately, this book is about devising methods for imagining and enacting other worlds. The perspective for this is situated between spatial practice and emerging commons, between an already plundered future and the politics of possibility, between reflection and future fiction. The book traces the moves STEALTH.unlimited (Ana Dzokić and Marc Neelen) have taken to reframe practice, to rethink economy and create urban commons. Its six-part sequence moves from critique to commitment, but along the way reveals an unsettling systemic rejection - by current politics and economy - of the urgency to upscale and 'train' for a world beyond the capitalist urban condition. The book leads us thus to a crucial question: how to construct our alternatives on the ruins of the broken system? By including personal accounts from emerging alternative voices from literature, economy and urban politics from across Europe, it expands this quest beyond the field of architecture and art.
