This is an advanced Master/slave book. This is a "content-heavy" book written for readers with very strong core values who have 5+ years of collective relationship experience in either M/s or committed D/s dynamics. It is intended for people who know a lot about a lot and are open to thinking about what they know in a different way. Fundamentally, readers must understand the differences between D/s and M/s in order to comfortably absorb the content. Unlike the fictional world of Masters and slaves, this book discusses the very real challenges and opportunities available to long-term M/s couples. It explains how strong leaders can combine with strong supportive followers to create a magical relationship. The authors draw upon their own extensive personal experience, as well as the experiences and views of literally hundreds of others who identify as M/s as shared during conference presentations and one-on-one discussions. About this book: A servant serves Master's needs or is fired; A slave serves Master's wants or is released. However, Master's wants must not trump slave's needs, Even when playing by RACK standards. slave is in service to Master; However, Master is in service to the relationship. Welcome to the complex and elegant World of Master/slave relations. This is a revised and substantially expanded version of my prior book, Master/slave Relations: Handbook of theory and practice. Even if you've read that one, this is substantially different. This is a book both for people starting out in M/s and also for people who have been involved for a few years. The second book in this series, Master/slave Mastery: Refining the Fire - ideas that matter is intended for those who have been involved with the Master/slave world for 5+ years. Thirty years have passed since eminent cultural and literary critic Fredric Jameson wrote his classic work, The Political Unconscious: Narrative as a Socially Symbolic Act, in which he insisted that 'there is nothing that is not social and historical - indeed, that everything is "in the last analysis" political'. Bringing together a team of leading scholars including Slavoj Zizek, Joan Ockman, Jane Rendell, and Kojin Karatani, this book critically examines the important contribution made by Jameson to the radical critique of architecture over this period, highlighting its continued importance to contemporary architecture discourse. Jameson's notion of the 'political unconscious' represents one of the most powerful notions in the link between aesthetics and politics in contemporary discourse. Taking this, along with other key concepts from Jameson, as the basis for its chapters, this anthology asks questions such as: Is architecture a place to stage 'class struggle'?, How can architecture act against the conditions that 'affirmatively' produce it? What does 'the critical', and 'the negative', mean in the discourse of architecture? and, How do we prevent architecture from participating in the reproduction of the cultural logic of late capitalism? This book breaks new ground in architectural criticism and offers insights into the interrelationships between politics, culture, space, and architecture and, in doing so, it acts as a counter-balast to the current trend in architectural research where a general aestheticization dominates the discourse.

Many get tripped up over the very concept of written protocols. We've met many Masters who believe that writing out the way they want things done removes creativity from the relationship. That's not the way we see it.In our experience, a protocol manual is much more than documenting rules of service. Writing a protocol manual helps you examine and refine your relationship and your relationship management style. The very process of creating a manual such as this reveals the kinds of service Master really wants from the slave and the kinds of service the slave can actually deliver. In that light, writing a protocol manual is an exercise in clarifying the intent of your relationship.Biased as we are, we assert that protocols help to reprogram both the Master's and the slave's brains. They help you create habits. Protocols don't merely define how you look on the outside, protocols help shape how you think on the inside. Since protocols specify the way Master wants this particular slave to do things, and since people are different from one another, protocol manuals are person-specific.

Hegel is notable for his distinctive contribution to the perennial concerns of political philosophy. He outlines a powerful account of freedom as both a personal and social achievement, discussing theories of personal rights, private property and punishment. He articulates a social analysis of human action and criticizes Kantian ethics. His theory of self-actualization locates our social identities within 'Ethical Life' - the institutions of family life, civil society and the state - expressing a unique variety of rationalist conservatism. In this volume some of the finest interpreters of Hegel writing in English explore this distinguished heritage and explain its contemporary relevance.

“Elegantly argued . . . convincingly shows the centrality of enslaved men and women to the transformation of the coastal upper South’s commercial life.” —TheJournal of Southern History Once a sleepy plantation society, the region from the Chesapeake Bay to coastal North Carolina modernized and diversified its economy in the years before the Civil War. Central to this industrializing process was slave labor. Money over Mastery, Family over Freedom tells the story of how slaves seized opportunities in these conditions to protect their family members from the auction block. Calvin Schermerhorn argues that the African American family provided the key to economic growth in the antebellum Chesapeake. To maximize profits in the burgeoning regional industries, slaveholders needed to employ or hire out a healthy supply of strong slaves, which tended to scatter family members. From each generation, they also selected the young, fit, and fertile for sale or removal to the cotton South. Conscious of this pattern, the enslaved were sometimes able to negotiate mutually beneficial labor terms—to save their families despite that new economy. Money over Mastery, Family over Freedom proposes a new way of understanding the role of American slaves in the antebellum marketplace. Rather than work against it, as one might suppose, enslaved people engaged with the market somewhat as did free Americans. Slaves focused their energy and attention, however, not on making money, as slaveholders increasingly did, but on keeping their kin out of the human coffles of the slave trade. “Displays exhaustive research, a well-crafted argument, and is a valuable addition to antebellum slave historiography.” —H-CivWar, H-Net Reviews
