Chinese Hinterland Capitalism And Shanxi Piaohao written by Luman Wang and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-21 with History categories.

This book examines Shanxi piaohao—private financiers from the Chinese hinterland—in the economic and business history of late imperial China, forming the original theory of Chinese hinterland capitalism. Deepening the existing understanding of capitalist dynamics at work in the families and financial institutions of late imperial China, the book foregrounds the expansionist role played by Shanxi piaohao in transforming China’s market and trade from an agrarian empire to a modern nation state. In a departure for economic history, it also focuses on the histories of the people and their lifeworlds behind financial institutions, which have previously been erased by universal capitalist narratives. Persistent binary oppositions between coastal areas and hinterland; state and market; and institutions and families are each transcended in recounting the local histories of global capital in the marginalized countryside and borderlands of China. Based on a wealth of archival material and correspondence with Shanxi piaohao offices and branches, Chinese Hinterland Capitalism and Shanxi Piaohao will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese and economic history, anthropology, and postcolonial studies more generally.

Crossing Cultural Boundaries written by Lili Hernández and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

To cross boundaries, to go beyond borders: an evocative idea, but what are the implications and consequences of transgression? How are boundaries challenged, redefined and overcome within the intricacies of taboos, bodies and identities? Crossing Cultural Boundaries: Taboos, Bodies and Identities brings together a range of articles that address this theme using different frameworks of interpretation. As in the case of taboo, boundaries are often internalised and may function as regulators for a society. Their existence becomes visible the moment they are violated. The essays in this book explore voluntary and accidental encounters with boundaries not only from theoretical perspectives but also from the experience of those who are part of transitions on a regular basis in their everyday lives. The notion of otherness is central to the articles in this book. The definition and interpretation of cultural others become part and parcel of the process of negotiation of bodies and identities. While â ~the otherâ (TM) is marked by outward bodily signs, spaces, taboos and cultural practices, the self is empowered by resisting submission to dominant modes and descriptions. Deconstructing boundaries becomes part of the project of redefining the self. This book will appeal to academics and researchers in communications, cultural studies, sociology, health sciences, anthropology, literature, and applied linguistics.

On Their Own Terms written by Benjamin A. Elman and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07-01 with History categories.

In On Their Own Terms, Benjamin A. Elman offers a much-needed synthesis of early Chinese science during the Jesuit period (1600-1800) and the modern sciences as they evolved in China under Protestant influence (1840s-1900). By 1600 Europe was ahead of Asia in producing basic machines, such as clocks, levers, and pulleys, that would be necessary for the mechanization of agriculture and industry. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Elman shows, Europeans still sought from the Chinese their secrets of producing silk, fine textiles, and porcelain, as well as large-scale tea cultivation. Chinese literati borrowed in turn new algebraic notations of Hindu-Arabic origin, Tychonic cosmology, Euclidian geometry, and various computational advances. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, imperial reformers, early Republicans, Guomindang party cadres, and Chinese Communists have all prioritized science and technology. In this book, Elman gives a nuanced account of the ways in which native Chinese science evolved over four centuries, under the influence of both Jesuit and Protestant missionaries. In the end, he argues, the Chinese produced modern science on their own terms.
