Veins of iron run deep in the history of America. Iron making began almost as soon as European settlement, with the establishment of the first ironworks in colonial Massachusetts. Yet it was Great Britain that became the Atlantic world’s dominant low-cost, high-volume producer of iron, a position it retained throughout the nineteenth century. It was not until after the Civil War that American iron producers began to match the scale and efficiency of the British iron industry. In Mastering Iron, Anne Kelly Knowles argues that the prolonged development of the US iron industry was largely due to geographical problems the British did not face. Pairing exhaustive manuscript research with analysis of a detailed geospatial database that she built of the industry, Knowles reconstructs the American iron industry in unprecedented depth, from locating hundreds of iron companies in their social and environmental contexts to explaining workplace culture and social relations between workers and managers. She demonstrates how ironworks in Alabama, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia struggled to replicate British technologies but, in the attempt, brought about changes in the American industry that set the stage for the subsequent age of steel. Richly illustrated with dozens of original maps and period art work, all in full color, Mastering Iron sheds new light on American ambitions and highlights the challenges a young nation faced as it grappled with its geographic conditions.

America’s emergence as a global industrial superpower was built on iron and steel, and despite their comparatively small numbers, no immigrant group played a more strategic role per capita in advancing basic industry than Welsh workers and managers. They immigrated in surges synchronized with the stage of America’s industrial development, concentrating in the coal and iron centers of Pennsylvania and Ohio. This book explores the formative influence of the Welsh on the American iron and steel industry and the transnational cultural spaces they created in mill communities in the tristate area—the greater upper Ohio Valley, eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania—including boroughs of Allegheny County, such as Homestead and Braddock. Focusing on the intersection of transnational immigration history, ethnic history, and labor history, Ronald Lewis analyzes continuity and change, and how Americanization worked within a small, relatively privileged, working-class ethnic group.

Global in scope and covering a broad range of subjects, the chapters in this volume discuss ways of turning sources into a GIS database, methods of analysing these databases, methods of visualising the results of the analyses, and approaches to interpreting analyses and visualisations. Chapter authors draw from a diverse collection of case studies from around the world, covering topics from state power in imperial China to the urban property market in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro, health and society in twentieth-century Britain and the demographic impact of the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. Critically evaluating both the strengths and limitations of GIS and illustrated with over two hundred maps and figures, this volume is an essential resource for all students and scholars interested in the use of GIS and spatial analysis as a method of historical research.

Iron Age explores the profound impact of ironworking on African societies, revealing how this technological innovation spurred transformations in agriculture, warfare, and social structures. Prior to iron, communities relied on stone, wood, and bone tools, limiting their capacity for growth. The adoption of ironworking led to more than just new tools; it acted as a catalyst for societal restructuring and economic expansion. The book argues that African societies demonstrated agency in adapting ironworking to their specific needs, challenging Eurocentric views of technological development. Drawing on archaeological findings, linguistic analysis, and oral traditions, the book examines the dissemination of ironworking across Africa and its lasting legacy. Chapters progress from the origins and spread of iron technology to its impact on agriculture, warfare, and trade, with case studies highlighting regional variations. Iron Age offers significant value by providing a comprehensive, accessible account of this transformative period. It synthesizes diverse sources to present a nuanced understanding of the African Iron Age, shedding light on the complex interplay between technological advancement and societal evolution.

How do the disillusioned, the forgotten, and the persecuted not merely hold on to life but expand its possibilities and preserve its beauty? What, in other words, does utopia look like in black? These questions animate Aaron Robertson’s exploration of Black Americans’ efforts to remake the conditions of their lives. Writing in the tradition of Saidiya Hartman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, Robertson makes his way from his ancestral hometown of Promise Land, Tennessee, to Detroit – the city where he was born, and where one of the country’s most remarkable Black utopian experiments got its start. Founded by the brilliant preacher Albert Cleage Jr., the Shrine of the Black Madonna combined Afrocentric Christian practice with radical social projects. Central to this endeavour was the Shrine’s chancel mural of a Black Virgin and child, the icon of a nationwide liberation movement that would come to be known as Black Christian Nationalism. Alongside the Shrine’s story, Robertson reflects on a diverse array of Black utopian visions, from the Reconstruction era through the countercultural fervour of the 1960s and 1970s and into the present day. By doing so, Robertson showcases the enduring quest of collectives and individuals for a world beyond the constraints of systemic racism. The Black Utopians offers a nuanced portrait of the struggle for spaces – both ideological and physical – where Black dignity, protection, and nourishment are paramount. This book is the story of a movement and of a world still in the making – one that points the way toward radical alternatives for the future. How We Got Here: An Enlightened Look at the Past that Will Change Your Future By: Ivanni Delgado Those who do not know the past are doomed to repeat it. The only way to create a better future is to take an enlightened look at the past of ourselves and our planet. In How We Got Here, Ivanni Delgado takes a thorough and clarifying look at history. Ivanni starts with the Big Bang, a small singularity, which produced all the known universe. Our own planet is a rich and varied home, filled with life and growth. Unicellar organisms evolved into plant and animal life. In the Stone Age, Homo Sapeins made tools, domesticated animals, and began agriculture. Human intellect evolved to improve survival, then evolved to form religion, art, and society. Tempered social impulses created standard social behavior within a group – both for good and ill. As humanity watched and observed the sky and the universe, they invented theories about their place and role in the cosmos. For 7,000 years of civilization, humans have seen and made great progress. But, in order to preserve our humanity and continue civilization, we must understand our history and choose wisdom to improve our lives and the lives of those around us. Inactivity is not an option. By remaining united and continuing our scientific search for truth, we can develop a brighter and better future. How We Got Here is written to teach us our history, to rout apathy, and to encourage progress and civilization.
