The process of user-centered innovation: how it can benefit both users and manufacturers and how its emergence will bring changes in business models and in public policy. Innovation is rapidly becoming democratized. Users, aided by improvements in computer and communications technology, increasingly can develop their own new products and services. These innovating users—both individuals and firms—often freely share their innovations with others, creating user-innovation communities and a rich intellectual commons. In Democratizing Innovation, Eric von Hippel looks closely at this emerging system of user-centered innovation. He explains why and when users find it profitable to develop new products and services for themselves, and why it often pays users to reveal their innovations freely for the use of all.The trend toward democratized innovation can be seen in software and information products—most notably in the free and open-source software movement—but also in physical products. Von Hippel's many examples of user innovation in action range from surgical equipment to surfboards to software security features. He shows that product and service development is concentrated among "lead users," who are ahead on marketplace trends and whose innovations are often commercially attractive. Von Hippel argues that manufacturers should redesign their innovation processes and that they should systematically seek out innovations developed by users. He points to businesses—the custom semiconductor industry is one example—that have learned to assist user-innovators by providing them with toolkits for developing new products. User innovation has a positive impact on social welfare, and von Hippel proposes that government policies, including R&D subsidies and tax credits, should be realigned to eliminate biases against it. The goal of a democratized user-centered innovation system, says von Hippel, is well worth striving for. An electronic version of this book is available under a Creative Commons license.

The Management Of International Acquisitions written by John Child and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-02-15 with Business & Economics categories.
This book addresses two important areas of concern for managers and management researchers. What are the management challenges involved in the acquisition of a foreign subsidiary? Why do companies pursue a strategy of growth through acquisition when the evidence shows performance is disappointing? In addition to addressing these questions, the authors examine both the acquisitions of foreign companies in the UK and the 'acquirers' themselves. They discuss the theoretical background to the debate over the significance of national management practices as opposed to international norms of practice shaped by global forces transcending national boundaries. They then compare and contrast the management practices of the five countries from which the acquirers covered in this book originate: the UK, the USA, Japan, France, and Germany. The authors' research indicates that while considerable convergence is taking place on many dimensions of management practice, distinct national management styles still exist among acquiring companies. The findings also show that although some policies are generally associated with better post-acquisition performance across the board, no one national approach is more successful than another, so long as it is implemented with confidence, determination, and consistency. Failure tends to follow from a lack of these qualities, rather than from having the 'wrong' management style.

What S Your Digital Business Model written by Peter Weill and has been published by Harvard Business Review Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-17 with Business & Economics categories.
What is your digital business model? While many leaders of companies recognize the threat from digital--and the potential opportunity--they lack a common language or a compelling framework to help them assess it and, more importantly, to direct them. They don't know how to think about their digital business model. In this probing and practical book, Peter Weill and Stephanie Woerner provide much-needed tools, self-assessments, motivating examples, and key financial analyses of where the profits will likely be made. Based on five years of study at the MIT Center for Information Systems Research, the book provides a powerful yet simple framework that has been field-tested globally with more than a dozen senior management teams. The authors found that digitization is moving companies' business models on two dimensions: from value chains to digital ecosystems, and from a fuzzy understanding of the needs of end customers to a sharper one. Looking at these dimensions in combination results in four distinct business models, each with different capabilities: (1) Supplier, (2) Omni-channel, (3) Modular Producer, and (4) Ecosystem Driver. The framework helps companies clarify where they are currently in an increasingly digital business landscape and highlights what's needed to move toward another, higher-value digital business model. In meeting the growing challenge to "go digital," this smart book will help you grapple with the threats, respond to the opportunities, and create winning digital strategies.

Seeing What S Next written by Clayton M. Christensen and has been published by Harvard Business Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Business & Economics categories.
When a disruptive innovation is launched, it changes the entire industry and every firm operating within in This book argues that it is possible to predict which companies will win and which will lose in a specific situation—and provides a practical framework for doing so. Most books on innovation—including Christensen’s previous two books—approached innovation from the inside-out, showing firms how they can create innovations inside their own companies. This book is written from an “outside-in” perspective, showing how executives, investors, and analysts can assess the impact of a new innovation on the firms they have a vested interest in.

The systems of innovation approach is considered by many to be a useful analytical approach for better understanding innovation processes as well as the production and distribution of knowledge in the economy. It is an appropriate framework for the empirical study of innovations in their contexts and is relevant for policy makers. This text is the result of the work within an international inter-disciplinary network or "working seminar" with the task of building a more solid and sophisticated conceptual and theoretical foundation for the continued study of innovations in a systemic context. The book has three parts. The first presents an overview and tries to work out some conceptual problems. In the second, the systems of innovation approach is related to innovation theory. Part three is devoted to increasing understanding of the functioning and dynamics of systems of innovation. There is also an introduction where the genesis and anatomy of different systems of innovation approaches are discussed and where the systems of innovation approach is characterized in nine dimensions.

Imagine sending a magazine article to 10 friends-making photocopies, putting them in envelopes, adding postage, and mailing them. Now consider how much easier it is to send that article to those 10 friends as an attachment to e-mail. Or to post the article on your own site on the World Wide Web. The ease of modifying or copying digitized material and the proliferation of computer networking have raised fundamental questions about copyright and patentâ€"intellectual property protections rooted in the U.S. Constitution. Hailed for quick and convenient access to a world of material, the Internet also poses serious economic issues for those who create and market that material. If people can so easily send music on the Internet for free, for example, who will pay for music? This book presents the multiple facets of digitized intellectual property, defining terms, identifying key issues, and exploring alternatives. It follows the complex threads of law, business, incentives to creators, the American tradition of access to information, the international context, and the nature of human behavior. Technology is explored for its ability to transfer content and its potential to protect intellectual property rights. The book proposes research and policy recommendations as well as principles for policymaking.
