Excerpt from Masters in Art: A Series of Illustrated Monographs The earliest portraits of which there is a distinct record are those of Mr. And Mrs. (afterwards Lord and Lady) Kenyon, which were drawn in 1775, the lady in profile, because, the child said, her face was not straight. About this time Thomas was sent to his only school, at The Fort, near Bristol, which was kept by a Mr. Jones. With the exception of a few lessons in French and Latin from a dissenting minister in Devizes, this was the only regular education he received; but it would appear from an anecdote related of him in mature life that he had some acquaintance with Greek. Excerpt from Great Masters Great artist of the past as a free agent, early possessed of all the power and development acquired by long work against outside pressure, and to think of him as imposing the form of his ideas upon an easy world. Hence, sometimes we think of Albrecht D'urer as bringing Teutonic art into Italy, while, of course, he is nothing more than a German student going to the land of greater art. We throw back into the early position of the great man the image of his full development; we make him out as conscious from the beginning of all his capacities. Instead of recognising in him the same laws that belong to other developments, we insist on his being all of one piece - as if, like Minerva, he had sprung all armed from the brain of Jupiter. In short, we forget that these men had to die long ago to obtain the authority which they hold to - day. It is possible that none of them achieved their best work, or carried out their intentions in full. Rubens and Raphael may have had some such chance, but we know that we see in Michelangelo and Rembrandt the expression of a struggle against outside necessities. To give a full account of the life of any great artist the history of each piece of work should be taken up as we take up the story of a general's campaign. I have not expressly stated these points in the brief essays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Masters in Art: El Greco It would be hard to imagine one who differed in more ways than he from the calculated, carefully poised art which we call classic. There is nothing of the unthinking serenity of Greece in his types; they are tortured and quite modern in expression. Half gods or Titans at the best, these men of his have little likeness to the Greek gods of High Olympus. Excerpt from Masters in Art, Vol. 9: Part 107; Millais Very early in his life he showed talent. He entered the Royal Academy Schools when only eleven years old, and at once began to do remarkable work. There are in existence sketches by him, made when he was only nine, which are astonishing things for a child of that age to have done. In short, as far as England could afford him training, he had learned all he could learn in schools while yet a lad. Excerpt from Master Painters: Being Pages From the Romance of Art But though the roaring current Of modern life passes him by, yet never were people more curious to hear about the lives of artists and their doings. Why is this? What is it that outsiders find so attractive about Bohemia? They would not live and work in a smell of paint and varnish and snatch scanty meals in the midst of the muddle. They have little taste for poverty, which is only picturesque to the outsider. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
