When the Nobel-Prize-winning novelist is finished with the day's writing, he takes his camera and wanders through Istanbul's various neighborhoods, visiting the backstreets of his town, areas without tourists, spaces that seem neglected and forgotten, spaces with a particular light. This is the orange light of Istanbul's windows and streetlamps that Pamuk knows so well from his childhood--from the Istanbul of 50 years ago, as he mentions in his introduction. But Pamuk also observes that the homely, cosy orange light is slowly being replaced by a new, bright and icy white light from new lightbulbs. His photographs from the backstreets of Istanbul record and preserve the cosy effect of this old, disappearing orange light, as well as the recognition of this new white vision. This book presents and discusses recent developments in the broad field of spectroscopy, providing the reader with an updated overview. William of Rubruck (circa 1220 – 1293) was a Flemish Franciscan missionary and explorer. His account is one of the masterpieces of medieval geographical literature comparable to that of Marco Polo. Born in Rubrouck, Flanders, he is known also as William of Rubruk, Willem van Ruysbroeck, Guillaume de Rubrouck or Willielmus de Rubruquis.A Flemish Franciscan monk, William had participated in the crusade of King Louis IX of France to Palestine and there heard about the Mongols from friar Andrew of Longjumeau, a Dominican who had been involved in papal diplomacy aimed at trying to enlist the Mongols in the Christian crusade against the Muslims. Rubruck then decided to undertake his own mission to the Mongols in the hope of promoting their conversion to Christianity. His roundtrip journey lasted the better part of three years. William had the distinction of being the first European to visit the Mongol capital of Karakorum on the Orhon River and return to write about it. In his report to King Louis IX titled "Itinerarium fratris Willielmi de Rubruquis de ordine fratrum Minorum, Galli, Anno gratia 1253 ad partes Orientales." (The Journey Of William Of Rubruck To The Eastern Parts Of The World) he provides a unique description of the Khan's palace and detail about the individuals of various ethnicities and religions whom he encountered.

John Gossage Martin Parr and John Gossage's British coastal trip covered spots like Georgian Clifton (Bristol), Severn Bridge (Wales), and Caerau, the mining village near Cardiff where photographer Robert Frank had made his famous report and met the miner Ben James in 1953. The road took them further north to reach Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales, ending in Liverpool, Morecambe and smaller towns in the Lake District. The outcome are shots of street scenes, backyards, gardens, sceneries and very few people on the way, silent testimonies of small, unexpected details of every- day life in a world that is not visited by many, let alone photographed. As Parr concludes in his introductory text: "I am amazed that the collective vision of this volume is so familiar, but entirely alien. It restores my faith in photography to kno w that a mature and original photographer like John Gossage can see the things I just did not notice." John Gossage , born in New York in 1946, now residing in Was hington, D.C., briefly studied with Lisette Model and Alexey Brodovitch from 1960 to 1961. In the late 1960s he learned Telecaster guitar from Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton, giving up professional music in 1973 and returning to photography. From 1974 through 1990 he had various exhibitions at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. From 1990 on he has been concentrating almost exclusively on publications, producing twenty-four different books and boxes on specific bodies of photographic work.
