This book considers the generative tension between the materiality and virtuality of walking methodologies in a/r/tography and arts-based educational research. It explores the materiality of practice—manifestations, manipulations, residues, and traces of both real and imagined experiences and events. Authors present artistic representations, renderings, artifacts, and documentations that allow for various forms of return and re-visitation of places/spaces and temporal moments. The book also investigates the digital and virtual, including video, images, media work, and emergent technologies that allow one to literally, metaphorically, affectively, and conceptually go somewhere that might be previously impossible to reach. Authors consider curricular and pedagogical implications of digital/virtual walking in relation to desire, agency, autonomy, freedom, and other issues around ethics. The book brings together entanglements of the corporeal and incorporeal, addressing thequestions: How does the (im)materiality of bodies/characters-in-motion in a/r/tographic practices shape understandings of place, space, and the self-in-relation? How do issues and particularities come to matter through one’s entanglements with(in) the (in)corporeal?

The focus of this edited book is to evoke and provoke conceptual conversations between early a/r/tographic publications and the contemporary scholarship of a/r/tographers publishing and producing today. Working around four pervasive themes found in a/r/tographic literature, this volume addresses relationality and renderings, ethics and embodiment, movement and materiality, and propositions and potentials. In doing so, it advances concepts that have permeated a/r/tographic literature to date. More specifically, the volume simultaneously offers a site where key historical works can easily be found and at the same time, offer new scholarship that is in conversation with these historical ideas as they are discussed, expanded and changed within contemporary contexts. The organizing themes offer conceptual pivots for thinking through how a/r/tography was first conceptualized and how it has evolved and how it might further evolve. Thus, this edited book affords an opportunity for all those working in and through a/r/tography to offer refined, revised, revisited or new conceptual understandings for contemporary scholarship and practice. The illustrations in this book are created by “Team Educohack”. "Seismoelectric Exploration: An Intro to New Methods" delves into the field of seismoelectric exploration in geophysics, offering detailed insights into how these methods are used to study ground and water levels. We cover the use of seismic waves and instruments to discover water levels, bores, and the refractions of the earth in both land and water. Our book discusses seismoelectric exploration methods used in different countries, providing a comprehensive understanding of how seismic waves are studied for oil wells. We highlight the advantages of seismoelectric exploration, such as predicting earthquakes and other disasters. By using various instruments, we explain how data is obtained and analyzed efficiently, saving time and manpower. We also explore the use of electromagnetic waves in seismoelectric exploration, supported by theoretical and experimental results. The book details land and marine surveys, including the use of sensors to detect oil and ground levels. We emphasize the importance of seismic instruments in survey methods and research, showcasing recent advancements in technology, such as 2D and 3D imaging.

Analytical Chemistry in the Exploration, Mining and Processing of Materials is a collection of plenary lectures presented at the International Symposium on Analytical Chemistry in the Exploration, Mining, and Processing of Materials, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on August 23-27, 1976. Contributors explore the applications of analytical chemistry in the exploration, mining, and processing of materials and cover topics ranging from the role of reference materials in analytical chemistry to analytical requirements in exploration geochemistry, along with activation analysis of ores and minerals. This book is comprised of 15 chapters and begins with a discussion on the analytical needs for primary coal covering three sets of parameters associated with chemical quality, physical nature and condition, and rank fundamental properties. The reader is then introduced to coal products (coke, tar, gas) and their analysis; analytical chemistry of the noble metals; use of chromatography in the analysis of inorganic materials; and developments in wavelength and energy dispersive spectrometry, Subsequent chapters deal with optical emission spectrochemical analysis; automated on-line analysis for controlling industrial processes; and atomic absorption spectroscopy and its applications. This monograph will be a useful resource for chemists, metallurgists, materials scientists, and mining engineers.

Today we know much about the sky: how stars are born, how they live and die, and how the universe as a whole evolves. We have learned of the existence of another type of matter, indifferent to light and yet decisive for the formation of galaxies, and we have a hint of a dark energy that since the last 4.5 billion years has taken over the control of the cosmos. We postulated and then discovered and even photographed black holes and listened to the faint rustle of the space-time ripple produced when these monsters devour each other. We reached these astonishing results (recognized by a bunch of Nobel Prizes and filling every day the media with wonders for the eyes and the mind) by the marriage of physics and astronomy that unified the Earth with the sky and then by the leap forward of science and technology in the Twentieth Century. This rich heritage has ancient roots. It was built by accumulating discoveries with errors, observations with fantasies, myths, and superstitions with flashes of genius, over a span of millennia, since Homo sapiens, turning his eyes to the immutable and perfect sky, began to ask questions. The book is a narration of the answers to these questions that had evolved over time: a progressive path, inserted in the general history, with some second thoughts and many obstacles. This is a saga of men and machines where greatness sometimes mixes with misery and passion often borders on sacrifice and even martyrdom. Why should we know it? Because our current knowledge is the result of these efforts and of the preconceptions that accompanied them. The challenge has been to present this complex and intricate subject without resorting to any formulas, so that it can be accessible to a wide audience of curious people, including high school and university students and in general all those who normally keep themselves informed of scientific things. A rich bibliography has also been added in the appendix for those wishing to learn more on one or more topics.

Photography And Exploration written by James R. Ryan and has been published by Reaktion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-15 with Photography categories.

When Ferdinand Magellan set out to circumnavigate the globe in 1519, he wasn’t able to bring a digital camera or a smartphone with him. Yet, as the eagerly awaited images from the Mars rover prove, modern exploration is inconceivable without photography. Since its invention in 1839, photography has been integral to exploration, used by explorers, sponsors, and publishers alike, and the early twentieth century, advances in technology—and photography’s newfound cultural currency as a truthful witness to the world—made the camera an indispensable tool. In Photography and Exploration, James R. Ryan uses a variety of examples, from polar journeys to space missions, to show how exploration photographs have been created, circulated, and consumed as objects of both scientific research and art. Examining a wide range of photographs and expeditions, Ryan considers how nations have often employed images as a means to scientific advancement or territorial conquest. He argues that because exploration has long been bound up with the construction of national and imperial identity, expeditionary photographs have often been used to promote claims to power—especially by the West. These images also challenge the way audiences perceive the world and their place within it. Featuring one hundred images, Photography and Exploration shines new light on how photography has shaped the image of explorers, expeditions, and the worlds they discovered.
