Euromech 357 took place in the nice authentic monastery 'Rolduc' in Kerkrade, Holland. The objective was to bring together researchers to present their latest advancements in the relatively new domain of Material properties identification by Mixed Numerical Experimental Methods (MMM). MMM are a modem and increasingly powerful way to determine the values of unknown parameters in a numerical model by observations made on real physical test structures. Starting from the measurement of output values (like displacements, stresses, velocities, vibrations, .. ) of the real physical test structure, MMM try to update parameters in the numerical model in such a way that the computed observations match the experimental observations. It was shown clearly at the colloquium that the combined use of numerical analysing tools and sophisticated measurement techniques has created an extra degree of freedom for the design of experiments and has led to new approaches for material characterisation. The colloquium was attended by 39 participants coming from 12 different European countries. We had 23 oral presentations on the different topics of the above mentioned sessions. Each presentation was followed by an intensive discussion. Du~ to the informal atmosphere and the limited number of participants, the discussions were very lively and fruitful. The opportunity to continue to discuss common problems after dinner in a reserved place was also offered to the Euromech participants. This opportunity and the fact that the monastery was isolated (nobody could escape!) created an excellent platform for discussions and personal contacts.

The nature and the human creations are full of complex phenomena, which sometimes can be observed but rarely follow our hypotheses. The best we can do is to build a parametric model and then try to adjust the unknown parameters based on the available observations. This topic, called parameter identification, is discussed in this book for materials and structures. The present volume of lecture notes follows a very successful advanced school, which we had the honor to coordinate in Udine, October 6-10, 2003. The authors of this volume present a wide spectrum of theories, methods and applications related to inverse and parameter identification problems. We thank the invited lecturers and the authors of this book for their contributions, the participants of the course for their active participation and the interesting discussions as well as the people of CISMfor their hospitality and their well-known professional help. Inverse Problems are found in many areas of engineering mechanics and there are many successful applications e.g. in non-destructive testing and characterization of material properties by ultrasonic or X-ray techniques, thermography, etc. Generally speaking, inverse problems are concerned with the determination of the input and the characteristics of a system, given certain aspects of its output. Mathematically, such problems are ill-posed and have to be overcome through development of new computational schemes, regularization techniques, objective functionals, and experimental procedures. Following the IUTAM Symposium on these topics, held in May 1992 in Tokyo, another in November 1994 in Paris, and also the more recent ISIP'98 in March 1998 in Nagano, it was concluded that it would be fruitful to gather regularly with researchers and engineers for an exchange of the newest research ideas. The most recent Symposium of this series "International Symposium on Inverse Problems in Engineering Mechanics (ISIP2000)" was held in March of 2000 in Nagano, Japan, where recent developments in inverse problems in engineering mechanics and related topics were discussed. The following general areas in inverse problems in engineering mechanics were the subjects of ISIP2000: mathematical and computational aspects of inverse problems, parameter or system identification, shape determination, sensitivity analysis, optimization, material property characterization, ultrasonic non-destructive testing, elastodynamic inverse problems, thermal inverse problems, and other engineering applications. The papers in these proceedings provide a state-of-the-art review of the research on inverse problems in engineering mechanics and it is hoped that some breakthrough in the research can be made and that technology transfer will be stimulated and accelerated due to their publication.

Advances In Understanding Engineered Clay Barriers written by Eduardo E. Alonso and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-06-23 with Technology & Engineering categories.
The use of clay barriers for waste-isolating purposes has gained increasing attention in the geotechnical engineering community. Practical interest is linked to fundamental research, which includes examination of the behaviour of compacted materials and expansive clays. The interaction between the barrier, waste and the surrounding ground may involve several thermo-hydro-mechanical and chemical-coupled processes that have been analyzed by means of 'in situ' tests, laboratory experiments and numerical modelling. Large-scale field tests have been developed in recent years by European Agencies dealing with the management of radioactive waste. These experiments have provided an opportunity to calibrate and to validate research models and offer benefits in terms of experience of instrumentation and installation techniques. The book includes about sixty papers presented in a symposium held in Spain in 2003. The four main topics of the book are: field emplacement and instrumentation techniques; fundamental research, material behaviour (i.e. bentonite), and laboratory testing; barrier behaviour and THM modelling; and chemical effects, HC and THMC modelling.
