Unlike European countries where the consolidation of town planning was based on legislative reforms, Latin America’s urbanismo mainly stemmed from urban plans for national capitals and metropolises. Austrian academic and planner Karl Brunner was hired in Chile, Colombia and Panama from the late 1920s to advise in the professional and academic domains, marking a shift from the so-called École Française d’Urbanisme (EFU) of Haussmannesque descent towards the Austrian-German Städtebau, While coordinating the municipal office and plan for Bogotá, Brunner translated his Manual de Urbanismo – the first textbook published in Latin America about the new discipline and the first to incorporate examples from local cities. Based on his 1924 course at Vienna’s National Faculty of Architecture Brunner’s Manual emphasized the ‘scientific system’ of the discipline. Brunner was the most influential figure of his time in the urban planning of the region, but has become overshadowed by Le Corbusier's and CIAM’s prevailing influence after the Second World War. Complete with a supporting introduction written by Arturo Almandoz, this volume includes the full copy of the original Manual de Urbanismo with an English translation of the synthesis. Founded in the first century BCE near a set of natural springs in an otherwise dry northeastern corner of the Valley of Mexico, the ancient metropolis of Teotihuacan was on a symbolic level a city of elements. With a multiethnic population of perhaps one hundred thousand, at its peak in 400 CE, it was the cultural, political, economic, and religious center of ancient Mesoamerica. A devastating fire in the city center led to a rapid decline after the middle of the sixth century, but Teotihuacan was never completely abandoned or forgotten; the Aztecs revered the city and its monuments, giving many of them the names we still use today. Teotihuacan: City of Water, City of Fire examines new discoveries from the three main pyramids at the site—the Sun Pyramid, the Moon Pyramid, and, at the center of the Ciudadela complex, the Feathered Serpent Pyramid—which have fundamentally changed our understanding of the city’s history. With illustrations of the major objects from Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antropología and from the museums and storage facilities of the Zona de Monumentos Arqueológicos de Teotihuacan, along with selected works from US and European collections, the catalogue examines these cultural artifacts to understand the roles that offerings of objects and programs of monumental sculpture and murals throughout the city played in the lives of Teotihuacan’s citizens. La presente publicación documenta las ponencias presentadas en el marco del “Encuentro Académico Cubano-Alemán” desarrollado en la Universidad de Kassel en marzo 2017. Constituye uno de los resultados del proyecto de investigación dedicado a la Arquitectura de Revolución Cubana, dedicado a la producción arquitectónica en Cuba de 1959 al presente. El título del proyecto de investigación en alemán – “Träume und Räume einer Revolution” – expresa muy bien la intención de contemplar a la vez lo que han sido y son las aspiraciones de los cubanos de 1959 en adelante y los espacios que han construido como contenedores de estas aspiraciones: se trata pues de captar un espíritu tal como se manifiesta en la arquitectura y el urbanismo, y, a la vez, se trata de reconocer a través de la obra arquitectónica realizada el espíritu que contiene. Una labor así requiere registrar la obra realizada, documentarla, y estudiarla críticamente. A la hora de encaminar este proyecto fue sustancial la inspiración que le debemos a Mario Coyula, lamentablemente fallecido demasiado temprano. A la hora de pasar a la implementación el saber de nuestro lado a José Fornés nos significó un aliciente permanente. Una aproximación fundamental al material trabajado ha sido a través de los historiadores de la arquitectura cubanos, concretamente a través de los profesores de historia de la arquitectura de las cuatro universidades con facultades o departamentos de arquitectura: son los autores de las ponencias aquí documentadas. Estamos muy agradecidos por los relatos que nos han presentado: relatos referidos a las regiones en las que se ubican las cuatro universidades, y otros referidos a temas puntuales. Queda este material a disposición de los estudiantes y estudiosos de la arquitectura en Cuba y el mundo, esperando que contribuya a lograr la meta de nuestro proyecto: darle a la arquitectura cubana de los años sesenta en adelante el lugar que le corresponde en el contexto latinoamericano por los desarrollos y las experiencias realizadas andando un camino diferente, andando un camino propio: el camino de la Revolución Cubana. Many cities across the globe are rediscovering their rivers. After decades or even centuries of environmental decline and cultural neglect, waterfronts have been vamped up and become focal points of urban life again; hidden and covered streams have been daylighted while restoration projects have returned urban rivers in many places to a supposedly more natural state. This volume traces the complex and winding history of how cities have appropriated, lost, and regained their rivers. But rather than telling a linear story of progress, the chapters of this book highlight the ambivalence of these developments. The four sections in Rivers Lost, Rivers Regained discuss how cities have gained control and exerted power over rivers and waterways far upstream and downstream; how rivers and floodplains in cityscapes have been transformed by urbanization and industrialization; how urban rivers have been represented in cultural manifestations, such as novels and songs; and how more recent strategies work to redefine and recreate the place of the river within the urban setting. CUADERNO URBANO es una publicación científica con arbitraje internacional dirigida a la difusión de artículos y ensayos que se ocupan desde las disciplinas científicas a la cuestión urbana -en el sentido más amplio del término-, combinando trabajos de caracteres empíricos, teóricos y ensayísticos que den cuenta de problemáticas locales, regionales y universales. La intención de la publicación es favorecer y promover la generación de ensayos y artículos de jóvenes investigadores con las reglas del arbitraje científico, colaborando en la producción editorial de sus ideas, como también divulgar el aporte de científicos ya consagrados en su especialidad disciplinar. En las últimas décadas del siglo XX, las ciudades latinoamericanas han experimentado cambios significativos, como consecuencia de los procesos de globalización a escala mundial que han afectado los patrones de crecimiento, no solo a escala regional, sino en la dimensión espacial intraurbana. El presente artículo examina los desarrollos residenciales construidos por el mercado inmobiliario en la ciudad de Córdoba, Argentina (período 2001-2010), da cuenta de las transformaciones en las nuevas expansiones periféricas (integradas por urbanizaciones residenciales especiales URE) e incorpora en el análisis nuevas formas urbanas localizadas en sectores consolidados de la ciudad (complejos de casonas). La lectura de estos tipos residenciales aporta indicadores (dimensiones, densidad y distancias al centro), permite caracterizar las intervenciones y entender su evolución en el tiempo. La investigación de las formas resultantes, en el espacio local donde se presentan, facilitará formular modelos interpretativos para planificar la ciudad, de cara a los desafíos del siglo XXI.
