Smart/intelligent systems is a primary technology for present and future applications in areas ranging from everyday life to aerospace missions, from civil to military environments, from robots to information technology. Smart materials are the critical foundation for high-performance smart devices, and smart devices are fundamental components for smart systems. The three cannot be separated. This book bridges the fields of smart materials, sensing and actuating devices, and intelligent systems, and provides an opportunity for researchers from all three arenas to channel information into a coherent, interdisciplinary community. Topics include: piezoelectric actuators; novel devices and systems; shape memory alloys and magnetostrictive devices; nanometer-scale processing and properties; piezoelectric materials; sensor materials and devices; and electroactive polymer actuators.

A structure is an assembly that serves an engineering function. A smart structure is one that serves this function smartly, i.e. by responding adaptively in a pre-designed useful and efficient manner to changing environmental conditions. Adaptive behaviour of one or more materials constituting a smart structure requires nonlinear response. This book describes the three main types of nonlinear-response materials: ferroic materials, soft materials, and nanostructured materials. Information processing by biological and artificial smart structures is also discussed. A smart structure typically has sensors, actuators, and a control system. Progress in all these aspects of smart structures has leant heavily on mimicking Nature, and the all-important notion in this context has been that of evolution. Artificial Darwinian and Lamarckian evolution holds the key to the development of truly smart structures. Modestly intelligent robots are already on the horizon. Projections about the low-cost availability of adequate computing power and memory size indicate that the future really belongs to smart structures. This book covers in a compact format the entire gamut of concepts relevant to smart structures. It should be of interest to a wide range of students and professionals in science and engineering.

Smart/intelligent systems employ active materials as sensors/actuators to respond to environmental conditions for next-generation machines and structures - applications ranging from everyday life to space exploration missions, from civilian products to military needs, from robots to information/communication technology. It is not surprising, then, that the development of smart materials systems and structures demand higher performance sensors/actuators with new and reliable functions and a fully integrated composite system design. This requires the combination of active and passive materials systems, often including the coupling of relevant mechanical, electrical, magnetic, thermal or other physical/chemical properties. This book bridges the fields of smart materials, sensing and actuating devices, and intelligent/smart systems, and provides an opportunity for researchers from related disciplines to build an interdisciplinary research field and community. Topics include: ferroelectrics and piezoelectrics; nanomaterials and nanofabrication; shape-memory alloys and magnetomaterials; active polymers and soft matters; and other materials, devices and characterization.

High Throughput Screening For Food Safety Assessment written by Arun K. Bhunia and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-06 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Recent advances in array-based detectors and imaging technologies have provided high throughput systems that can operate within a substantially reduced timeframe and other techniques that can detect multiple contaminants at one time. These technologies are revolutionary in terms of food safety assessment in manufacturing, and will also have a significant impact on areas such as public health and food defence. This book summarizes the latest research and applications of sensor technologies for online and high throughput screening of food. The book first introduces high throughput screening strategies and technology platforms, and discusses key issues in sample collection and preparation. The subsequent chapters are then grouped into four sections: Part I reviews biorecognition techniques; Part II covers the use of optical biosensors and hyperspectral imaging in food safety assessment; Part III focuses on electrochemical and mass-based transducers; and finally Part IV deals with the application of these safety assessment technologies in specific food products, including meat and poultry, seafood, fruits and vegetables. - Summarises the latest research on sensor technologies for online and high-throughput screening of food - Covers high-throughput screening and the current and forecast state of rapid contaminant detection technologies - Looks at the use of optical and electrochemical biosensors and hyperspectral imaging in food safety assessment and the application of these technologies in specific food products
