What math do you see?" Students can draw or write the math they notice in the box below the photo. Celebrate all of the different kinds of math that students can find. Some students may notice numbers, while others will see shapes or examples of measurement or spatial relations. Use the suggested questions to engage your students in math thinking. The even-numbered pages in this workbook have space for you to write a math question. You will find suggested math questions about each photo starting on page 41. Discuss and celebrate the variety of different solutions that students come up with to answer the question and solve each math problem. Encourage students to write their own questions or problems. A city is a big, busy place with so much to see and do. There is math everywhere from the shapes used in the designs of buildings to how much water a large fountain might hold. In this book readers explore the math that exists in a large city using the 'see, think, and wonder' thinking routine. Colourful photos and an easy to access text invite both children and adults to explore the fun and excitement of carefully observing everyday objects in an urban area. This book can spark mathematical conversations with children, and be used as a guide for discovering the rich math that exists in the city with children before a walk outside. Photos can also be used without text to engage children in math talks as they observe and discuss what they see on each page. Educators will find this book to be an effective resource to inspire math talks within the classroom or before heading outside to play and explore. Often educators are asked to justify children's open-ended explorations outdoors. Reading City Math: See, Think and Wonder before heading outside will help empower children to notice and name the learning they are experiencing while studying the world around them. Families can use this book as a tool for helping inspire math thinking and conversation with children during quality reading time together or before heading outside to play and explore.

Many children (and adults) think of math as a subject that needs to be explored in isolation during a 'math class'. In this book readers are introduced to the many different ways math is visible in children's artistic experiences. Noticing patterns and shapes in artwork, identifying lines of symmetry in pictures, and measuring to fit an art piece into a frame all help children notice and name the ways math helps them when creating and exploring art. In this book readers explore the math that exists in artistic tools and experiences using the 'see, think, and wonder' thinking routine. Colourful photos and an easy to access text invite both children and adults to explore math in the world around us. Photos can also be used without text to engage children in math talks as they observe and discuss what they see on each page. Educators will find this book to be an effective resource to inspire math talks within the classroom (e.g., at the art center, during an art lesson, or when sharing children's work) or before heading on a walk around the school or community to look at artwork. Families can use this book as a tool for helping inspire math thinking and conversation with children during quality reading time together or when reflecting upon children's art creations that have been brought home from school.
