Although transportation economists have advocated the tolling of urban streets as a mechanism for controlling congestion and managing travel demands for over 50 years, it is only recently that this idea has become practical. When compared to the alternative of building more roads, congestion pricing - in particular via electronic tolling - is attractive and has been adopted in countries around the world. Recent implementations in London, Singapore, and various cities in Norway, as well as a number of projects in the United States, have been judged successful. This book presents rigorous treatments of issues related to congestion pricing. The chapters describe recent advances in areas such as mathematical and computational models for predicting traffic congestion, determining when, where, and how much to levy tolls, and analyzing the impact of tolls on transporation systems. The analyses and methodologies developed in this book provide: - Mechanisms that aid in determining and comparing congestion pricing schemes - Methodologies for evaluating the efficiency of existing and proposed congestion pricing schemes - A means to predict the impact of pricing on urban transporation systems - Information essential to the financial and political success of congestion pricing programs.

Throughout the world, traffic levels are increasing and, in urban areas, these increasing levels have led to pressures on the road networks which are causing serious economic, environmental and social problems. This book examines the full range of 'push and pull' Travel Demand Management measures. This covers areas of regulatory, pricing, planning and persuasive policies to encourage individuals to make their trips in off-peak periods, by a different mode or to find another way of carrying out the trip purpose. Applying such measures can result in a more efficient transport system, improved environmental conditions and improvements in safety as well as revenue generation for use on alternative transport systems. The editors conclude with a summary of findings within the book and suggestions for best future practice.

Mathematical Models in Economics is a component of Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences in which is part of the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. This theme is organized into several different topics and introduces the applications of mathematics to economics. Mathematical economics has experienced rapid growth, generating many new academic fields associated with the development of mathematical theory and computer. Mathematics is the backbone of modern economics. It plays a basic role in creating ideas, constructing new theories, and empirically testing ideas and theories. Mathematics is now an integral part of economics. The main advances in modern economics are characterized by applying mathematics to various economic problems. Many of today's profound insights into economic problems could hardly be obtained without the help of mathematics. The concepts of equilibrium versus non-equilibrium, stability versus instability, and steady states versus chaos in the contemporary literature are difficult to explain without mathematics. The theme discusses on modern versions of some classical economic theories, taking account of balancing between significance of economic issues and mathematical techniques. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.

In the twenty-first century the sustainability of energy and transportation systems is on the top of the political agenda in many countries around the world. Environmental impacts of human economic activity necessitate the consideration of conflicting goals in decision making processes to develop sustainable systems. Any sustainable development has to reconcile conflicting economic and environmental objectives and criteria. The science of multiple criteria decision making has a lot to offer in addressing this need. Decision making with multiple (conflicting) criteria is the topic of research that is at the heart of the International Society of Multiple Criteria Decision Making. This book is based on selected papers presented at the societies 19th International Conference, held at The University of Auckland, New Zealand, from 7th to 12th January 2008 under the theme "MCDM for Sustainable Energy and Transportation Systems''.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of reinforcement learning for ridesharing applications. The authors first lay out the fundamentals of the ridesharing system architectures and review the basics of reinforcement learning, including the major applicable algorithms. The book describes the research problems associated with the various aspects of a ridesharing system and discusses the existing reinforcement learning approaches for solving them. The authors survey the existing research on each problem, and then examine specific case studies. The book also includes a review of two of methods closely related to reinforcement learning: approximate dynamic programming and model-predictive control.

Welcome to the second volume of Transactions on Computational Collective Intel- gence (TCCI), a new journal devoted to research in computer-based methods of c- putational collective intelligence (CCI) and their applications in a wide range of fields such as the Semantic Web, social networks and multi-agent systems. TCCI strives to cover new methodological, theoretical and practical aspects of CCI understood as the form of intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and competition of many individuals (artificial and/or natural). The application of multiple computational int- ligence technologies such as fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, neural s- tems, consensus theory, etc. , aims to support human and other collective intelligence and to create new forms of CCI in natural and/or artificial systems. TCCI is a double-blind refereed and authoritative reference dealing with the wo- ing potential of CCI methodologies and applications, as well as emerging issues of interest to academics and practitioners. This second issue contains a collection of 10 articles selected from high-quality submissions addressing advances in the foun- tions and applications of computational collective intelligence. In “Integration P- posal for Description Logic and Attributive Logic – Towards Semantic Web Rules” G. Nalepa and W. Furmanska propose a transition from attributive logic to description logic in order to improve the design of Semantic Web rules. K. Thorisson et al.
