The aim of the series is to present new and important developments in pure and applied mathematics. Well established in the community over two decades, it offers a large library of mathematics including several important classics. The volumes supply thorough and detailed expositions of the methods and ideas essential to the topics in question. In addition, they convey their relationships to other parts of mathematics. The series is addressed to advanced readers wishing to thoroughly study the topic. Editorial Board Lev Birbrair, Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Brasil Walter D. This volume contains the Proceedings of 'Quantum Gravity': a series of qualified lectures of most outstanding scientists given during the XIV Course of the International School of Cosmology and Gravitation. As usual of that School, the Course was conceived for researchers at different levels of scientific maturity ranging from post-doctorate research students to well established research workers: then in every lecture you can find an introduction where a review and analysis of the main mathematical, physical and epistemological difficulties encountered at the formulations of relativistic quantum theories are expounded, ranging from relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum field theory in Minkowski and in curved space-time to the various canonical and covariant approaches to quantum gravity.

This book is an elementary self-contained introduction to some constructions of representation theory and related topics of differential geometry and analysis. Topics covered include the theory of various Fourier-like integral operators such as Segal-Bargmann transforms, Gaussian integral operators in $L^2$ and in the Fock space, integral operators with theta-kernels, the geometry of real and $p$-adic classical groups and symmetric spaces. The heart of the book is the Weil representation of the symplectic group (real and complex realizations, relations with theta-functions and modular forms, $p$-adic and adelic constructions) and representations in Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions of several complex variables. This book is addressed to graduate students and researchers in representation theory, differential geometry, and operator theory. Prerequisites are standard university courses in linear algebra, functional analysis, and complex analysis.

Simply to say that this is a collection of essays in honor of the late Wolfgang Yourgrau (1908-1979) is to explain, at least for-the obviously many-"insiders," the unusually wide-ranging title of the present volume. In a Foreword to the Proceedings of the First International Colloquium (focusing on logic, physical reality, and history), held at the University of Denver in May of 1966 under their leadership, Wolfgang Y ourgrau and Allen Breck wrote, in an oblique reference to C. P. Snow: "Indeed there are not two or three or four cultures: there is only one culture; our generation has lost its awareness of this . . . . Historians, logicians, physicists-all are banded in one common enterprise, namely in their des ire to weave an enlightened fabric of human knowledge. " Augment, if you will, the foregoing categories of scholars with biologists, philos ophers, cosmologists, and theologians-all of whom, in addition to historians, Wolf gang Yourgrau, by dint of his inextinguishable enthusiasm and charismatic qualities, assembled in Denver for the Second and Third International Colloquia (in 1967 and 1974, respectively)-and a few other besides, and one arrives at a statement of the credo wh ich Y ourgrau not only professed, but consistently exemplified throughout his adult life.

The Symposium was held at the Great Wall Sheraton Hotel in Beijing, China in the period August 25-30, 1986. The decision to concentrate on the observational aspects of modern cosmology was taken in part because this conference has come in a period when there have been several international meetings on one aspect of modern cosmology, namely the early universe and its possible relationship to particle physics. While that approach is extremely exciting, it has the disadvantage that its connection with much of observational cosmology is very indirect. Thus there has been little opportunity to discuss critically the wealth of new data that are now becoming available which bear on the structure and evolution of the Universe but not always on its early history. This Symposium was planned to cover all aspects of observational cosmology, with only comparatively minor excursions into theory. Nearly 200 participants attended from 21 countries. A total of 26 invited papers and 73 contributed papers were given. This meant that everyone worked hard and long from 9 A.M. to about 5:30 P.M. for five of the six days of the conference. In addition to oral contributions, space was made available for poster papers and 56 of these were available for study for the duration of the conference.
