In his student years the author of this book was fortunate to have Tord Palander, once the leading location theorist of his age, as teacher and later as his thesis adviser. Palander started his economics career in the 30es with taking interest in spatial economics, and ended up with monetary economics in the 50es. The author made the reverse route. So, in the intersection of our professional lives Palander and I both worked with monetary issues, and we never spoke of spatial economics in his remaining lifetime. Despite this the author assimilated Palander's basic philosophy which perspired already through his dissertation (Beitriige zur Standortstheorie ): Good science is there to be easily understood, the difficult and mysterious being under the con stant suspicion of being wrong. Also, it was when trying to organize Palander's scientific remains upon his death in 1972 that the author found two small papers by Martin Beckmann from the early 50es. These concise contributions, largely overlooked, which did cast the entire spatial trade equilibrium in terms of two partial differen tial equations became the focus of interest of the author for many years. It was, however, at first hard to get ahead with the Beckmann model, just because it was so general. It could subsume most of the models ever devel oped in spatial economics, but, due to this very generality, it was difficult to get out any particular information, except in terms of examples.

In 1976, volume 116 of the Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems appeared in the library of the University of Illinois. The title of the book, Input-Output Analysis and the Structure of Income Distribution was sufficiently intriguing to one of the present editors (Hewings) to command attention. Some years later, during the First World Congress of the Regional Science Association in Cambridge Massachusetts in 1980, Madden and Batey presented some of their work using their now familiar demographic-economic modeling system. Discussion ensued about the relationship between this system, Miyazawa's formulation and the social accounting matrices most closely associated with the work of Stone. During a year's residence at the University of Illinois, Batey was able to produce a valuable typology of multipliers that began the process of integrating these several modeling systems into a coherent package. Thereafter, a number of regional scientists have exploited the ideas and insights proposed by Miyazawa, especially the notion of the interrelational income multiplier and the ideas of internal and external multipliers.

One aspect of the new economy is a transition to a networked society, and the emergence of a highly interconnected, interdependent and complex system of networks to move people, goods and information. An example of this is the in creasing reliance of networked systems (e. g. , air transportation networks, electric power grid, maritime transport, etc. ) on telecommunications and information in frastructure. Many of the networks that evolved today have an added complexity in that they have both a spatial structure – i. e. , they are located in physical space but also an a spatial dimension brought on largely by their dependence on infor mation technology. They are also often just one component of a larger system of geographically integrated and overlapping networks operating at different spatial levels. An understanding of these complexities is imperative for the design of plans and policies that can be used to optimize the efficiency, performance and safety of transportation, telecommunications and other networked systems. In one sense, technological advances along with economic forces that encourage the clustering of activities in space to reduce transaction costs have led to more efficient network structures. At the same time the very properties that make these networks more ef ficient have also put them at a greater risk for becoming disconnected or signifi cantly disruptedwh en super connected nodes are removed either intentionally or through a targeted attack.
