The first graduate-level text devoted to the subject, this classic offers a concise history and overview of methods as well as an excellent exposition of the mathematical foundations underlying classical operations research procedures. It begins with a review of historical, scientific, and mathematical aspects; examples and ideas related to classical methods of forming models introduce discussions of optimization, game theory, applications of probability, and queuing theory. Carefully selected exercises illustrate important and useful ideas. This text is an ideal introduction for students to the basic mathematics of operations research as well as a valuable source of references to early literature on operations research. 1959 edition.

Mathematical Techniques of Operational Research is a seven-chapter text that covers the principles and applications of various mathematical tools and models to for operational research. Chapter I provides the basic mathematical ideas used in later chapters. Chapters II and III deal with linear programming, including the special cases of transportation and assignment, as well as their applications such as the Trim Problem. Chapters IV and V discuss the theory of queues and describe the general stationary properties of the single-channel queue, and of simple queues in series and in parallel. These chapters also examine some transient properties of queues. Chapter VI focuses on machine interference, which is an aspect of queueing theory, while Chapter VII deals with the important and mathematically subject of Stock Control or Inventory Theory. This book is intended primarily to graduate mathematicians, business manages, and industrial leaders.

The design of more and more powerful computers, robots, flexible machine systems, etc. has increased the role of mathematicians in the field of high technology. To explore this role an International Workshop on the Mathematical Methods for Industrial Problems was held in Bari, Italy, 3--5 September 1988. The scope of the workshop was to exchange ideas and discuss problems encountered in the formulation, analysis and computer simulation of mathematical models of industrial processes. Problems of validation of models vs experimental data were also considered. This Proceedings volume contains the invited talks by lectures from universities and research centers involved in university--industry collaboration in the mathematical sciences. Also included are papers from experts from industries on mathematical problems arising in industry and the methods employed to solve them.

Research Methods for Operations and Supply Chain Management, third edition, is a toolkit of research approaches primarily for advanced students and beginner researchers, but also a reference book for any researcher in operations and supply chain management (OSCM). Many students begin their careers in research limited by the one or few approaches taken by their department. The concise, accessible overviews found here equip them with an understanding of a variety of methods and how to use them, enabling students to tailor their research project to their own strengths and goals. The more seasoned researcher will find comprehensive descriptions and analyses on a wide variety of research approaches. This updated and enhanced edition responds to the latest developments in OSCM, including the growing prominence of services and production of intangible products, the complete supply chain, and the increasing use of secondary data and of mixed approaches. Alternative research approaches are included and explored to help with the planning of research. This edition also includes expanded literature reviews and analysis to guide students towards the next steps in their reading, and more detailed step-by-step advice to tie theory with the research. Including contributions from an impressive range of the field’s leading thinkers in OSCM research, this is a guide that no one embarking on an OSCM research project should be without. Previous editions of this book were published under the title Research Methods for Operations Management and Researching Operations Management.

This book, now in its second edition, provides a valuable compendium of problems as a reference for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, researchers and practitioners of operations research and management science. These problems can serve as a basis for the development or study of assignments and exams. Also, they can be useful as a guide for the first stage of the model formulation, i.e. the definition of a problem. The book is divided into 11 chapters that address the following topics: linear programming, integer programming, nonlinear programming, network modeling, inventory theory, queue theory, tree decision, game theory, dynamic programming and Markov processes. Included are a considerable number of statements of operations research applications for management decision-making. The book provides concise solutions to these problems although all problems are examined in depth. All the problems are based on the research experience of the authors in real-world companies and the teaching experience of the authors. This second edition of the book has many new problems and solutions influenced by today's evolving industrial engineering, management and decision-making practices. The book includes many new problems specifically designed to address today's business challenges. The new edition offers readers the opportunity to tackle and analyse new problems inspired by real-life scenarios.

The remarkable growth of financial markets over the past decades has been accompanied by an equally remarkable explosion in financial engineering, the interdisciplinary field focusing on applications of mathematical and statistical modeling and computational technology to problems in the financial services industry. The goals of financial engineering research are to develop empirically realistic stochastic models describing dynamics of financial risk variables, such as asset prices, foreign exchange rates, and interest rates, and to develop analytical, computational and statistical methods and tools to implement the models and employ them to design and evaluate financial products and processes to manage risk and to meet financial goals. This handbook describes the latest developments in this rapidly evolving field in the areas of modeling and pricing financial derivatives, building models of interest rates and credit risk, pricing and hedging in incomplete markets, risk management, and portfolio optimization. Leading researchers in each of these areas provide their perspective on the state of the art in terms of analysis, computation, and practical relevance. The authors describe essential results to date, fundamental methods and tools, as well as new views of the existing literature, opportunities, and challenges for future research.

The field of operations research provides a scientific approach to managerial decision making. In a contemporary, hypercompetitive ever-changing business world, a manager needs quantitative and factual ways of solving problems related to optimal allocation of resources, profit/loss, maximization/minimization etc. In this endeavor, the subject of doing research on how to manage and make operations efficient is termed as Operations Research. The reference text provides conceptual and analytical knowledge for various operations research techniques. Readers, especially students of this subject, are skeptic in dealing with the subject because of its emphasis on mathematics. However, this book has tried to remove such doubts by focusing on the application part of OR techniques with minimal usage of mathematics. The attempt was to make students comfortable with some complicated topics of the subject. It covers important concepts including sensitivity analysis, duality theory, transportation solution method, Hungarian algorithm, program evaluation and review technique and periodic review system. Aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of mechanical engineering, civil engineering, industrial engineering and production engineering, this book: • Discusses extensive use of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and formulas in solving operations research problems • Provides case studies and unsolved exercises at the end of each chapter • Covers industrial applications of various operations research techniques in a comprehensive manner • Discusses creating spreadsheets and using different Excel formulas in an easy-to-understand manner • Covers problem-solving procedures for techniques including linear programming, transportation model and game theory
