Civil engineering structures tend to be fabricated from materials that respond elastically at normal levels of loading. Most such materials, however, would exhibit a marked and ductile inelasticity if the structure were overloaded by accident or by some improbable but naturally occuring phenomeon. Indeed, the very presence of such ductility constitutes an important safety provision for large-scale constructions where human life is at risk. In the comprehensive evaluation of safety in structural design, it is therefore unrealistic not to consider the effects of ductility. This book sets out to show that the bringing together of the theory and methods of mathematical programming with the mathematical theory of plasticity furnishes a model which has a unifying theoretical nature and is entirely representative of observed structural behaviour. The contents of the book provide a review of the relevant aspects of mathematical programming and plasticity theory, together with a detailed presentation of the most interesting and potentially useful applications in both framed and continuum structures: ultimate strength and elastoplastic deformability; shakedown and practical upper bounds on deformation measures; evolutive dynamic response; large displacements and instability; stochastic and fuzzy programming for representing uncertainty in ultimate strength calculations. Besides providing a ready fund of computational algorithms, mathematical programming invests applications in mechanics with a refined mathematical formalism, rich in fundamental theorems, which often gives addi- tional insight into known results and occasionally lead to new ones. In addition to its obvious practical utility, the educational value of the material thoroughly befits a university discipline.

To predict loading limits for structures and structural elements is one of the oldest and most important tasks of engineers. Among the theoretical and numericalmethodsavailableforthispurpose,so-called“DirectMethods”,- bracing Limit- and Shakedown Analysis, play an eminent role due to the fact that they allow rapid access to the requested information in mathematically constructive manners. The collection of papers in this book is the outcome of a workshop held at Aachen University of Technology in November 2007. The individual c- tributions stem in particular from the areas of new numerical developments renderingthemethodsmoreattractive forindustrialdesign, extensionsofthe general methodology to new horizons of application, probabilistic approaches and concrete technological applications. The papers are arranged according to the order of the presentations in the workshop and give an excellent insight into state-of-the-art developments in this broad and growing ?eld of research. The editors warmly thank all the scientists, who have contributed by their outstanding papers to the quality of this edition. Special thanks go to Jaan Simon for his great help in putting together the manuscript to its ?nal shape.

The modeling of mechanical properties of materials and structures is a complex and wide-ranging subject. In some applications, it is sufficient to assume that the material remains elastic, i.e. that the deformation process is fully reversible and the stress is a unique function of strain. However, such a simplified assumption is appropriate only within a limited range, and in general must be replaced by a more realistic approach that takes into account the inelastic processes such as plastic yielding or cracking. This book presents a comprehensive treatment of the most important areas of plasticity and of time-dependent inelastic behavior (viscoplasticity of metals, and creep and shrinkage of concrete). It covers structural aspects such as: * incremental analysis * limit analysis * shakedown analysis * optimal design * beam structures subjected to bending and torsion * yield line theory of plates * slip line theory * size effect in structures * creep and shrinkage effects in concrete structures. The following aspects of the advanced material modeling are presented: * yield surfaces for metals and plastic-frictional materials * hardening and softening * stress-return algorithms * large-strain formulations * thermodynamic framework * microplane models * localization of plastic strain. Inelastic Analysis of Structures is a textbook for basic and advanced courses on plasticity, with a slight emphasis on structural engineering applications, but with a wealth of material for geotechnical, mechanical, aerospace, naval, petroleum and nuclear engineers. The text is constructed in a very didactical way, while the mathematics has been kept rigorous.

Inelastic Behaviour Of Structures Under Variable Repeated Loads written by Dieter Weichert and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-04 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book deals with the safety assessment of structures and structural components, possibly operating beyond the elastic limits under variable repeated thermo-mechanical loads. Examples of such situations can be found both in mechanical and civil engineering (e.g. transportation technologies, pressure vessels, pipelines, offshore platforms, dams, pavements and buildings in seismic zones). So-called "direct” methods are focused, based on the shakedown theorems and their specialisation to limit theorems. These methods are receiving increased attention for the prediction of structural failure because they provide the information that is essential in practice (e.g. safety factor and collapse mechanisms) by more economical procedures than step-by-step inelastic analysis; also, they only need a minimum of information on the evolution of loads as functions of time. The addressed audience are primarily engineers and scientists active in Structural Engineering and Safety and Reliability Analysis.

“Computational Plasticity with Emphasis on the Application of the Unified Strength Theory” explores a new and important branch of computational mechanics and is the third book in a plasticity series published by Springer. The other two are: Generalized Plasticity, Springer: Berlin, 2006; and Structural Plasticity, Springer and Zhejiang University Press: Hangzhou, 2009. This monograph describes the unified strength theory and associated flow rule, the implementation of these basic theories in computational programs, and shows how a series of results can be obtained by using them. The unified strength theory has been implemented in several special nonlinear finite-element programs and commercial Finite Element Codes by individual users and corporations. Many new and interesting findings for beams, plates, underground caves, excavations, strip foundations, circular foundations, slop, underground structures of hydraulic power stations, pumped-storage power stations, underground mining, high-velocity penetration of concrete structures, ancient structures, and rocket components, along with relevant computational results, are presented. This book is intended for graduate students, researchers and engineers working in solid mechanics, engineering and materials science. The theories and methods provided in this book can also be used for other computer codes and different structures. More results can be obtained, which put the potential strength of the material to better use, thus offering material-saving and energy-saving solutions. Mao-Hong Yu is a professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China.

We three editors of this volume are former Ph. D. students of Professor Mircea Cohn at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Donald Grierson obtained his Ph. D. degree in 1968, Alberto Franchi in 1977, and Paolo Riva in 1988, and as such, we span almost the entire career of Professor Cohn at Waterloo. Even though we graduated during different decades in his life, we share similar views of Mircea Cohn as an educator, researcher and man. Together we recall that he was very firm in his resolve that we get the most out of the education he was facilitating for us. Together we agree that he was inspirational in his desire to have us carry out the very best research work we were capable of. Together we feel particularly fortunate to have had such a dedicated and distinguished individual as Professor Cohn as our Ph. D. research advisor. It is with great pleasure that we ack nowledge him as our mentor and friend. We began in 1989 to plan this volume as a tribute to Professor Cohn on the occasion of his 65th birthday in 1991. Upon contacting his many former students and research associates from around the world, we were not surprised to find that they too shared our feelings of respect and admiration for Mircea Cohn as an educator, researcher and man.

Stochastic Optimization Methods written by Kurt Marti and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-21 with Business & Economics categories.

This book examines optimization problems that in practice involve random model parameters. It details the computation of robust optimal solutions, i.e., optimal solutions that are insensitive with respect to random parameter variations, where appropriate deterministic substitute problems are needed. Based on the probability distribution of the random data and using decision theoretical concepts, optimization problems under stochastic uncertainty are converted into appropriate deterministic substitute problems. Due to the probabilities and expectations involved, the book also shows how to apply approximative solution techniques. Several deterministic and stochastic approximation methods are provided: Taylor expansion methods, regression and response surface methods (RSM), probability inequalities, multiple linearization of survival/failure domains, discretization methods, convex approximation/deterministic descent directions/efficient points, stochastic approximation and gradient procedures and differentiation formulas for probabilities and expectations. In the third edition, this book further develops stochastic optimization methods. In particular, it now shows how to apply stochastic optimization methods to the approximate solution of important concrete problems arising in engineering, economics and operations research.

The International Symposium on History of Machines and Mechanisms is a new initiative to promote explicitly researches and publications in the field of the History of TMM (Theory of Machines and Mechanisms). It was held at the University of Cassino, Italy, from 11 to 13 May 2000. The Symposium was devoted mainly to the technical aspects of historical developments and therefore it has been addressed mainly to the IFToMM Community. In fact, most the authors of the contributed papers are experts in TMM and related topics. This has been, indeed, a challenge: convincing technical experts to go further in-depth into the background of their topics of expertise. We have received a very positive response, as can be seen by the fact that these Proceedings contain contributions by authors from all around the world. We received about 50 papers, and after review about 40 papers were accepted for both presentation and publishing in the Proceedings. This means also that the History of TMM is of interest everywhere and, indeed, an in-depth knowledge of the past can be of great help in working on the present and in shaping the future with new ideas. I believe that a reader will take advantage of the papers in these Proceedings with further satisfaction and motivation for her or his work (historical or not). These papers cover the wide field of the History of Mechanical Engineering and particularly the History of TMM.
