Reliability-based design (RBD) procedures for engineered structures are being developed and quickly gaining acceptance by cade agencies throughout the world. Numerous organizations are involved in the development of national or regional cades without the benefit of interchange of ideas and methodologies. Harmonization and coordination of these activities is absolutely essential if the ever-increasing international commerce is to flourish. This NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) was organized to bring together, for the first time, experts on RBD and related subjects from various countries to assess the current knowledge and recommend new developments. Further, due to their unique nature and great economic significance in most parts of the world, special emphasis was placed on engineered wood structures. For example, in North America more wood products are used in construction than ali other materials (steel, concrete, brick, etc.) combined. However, the wood industry segment, historically, receives less attention and smaller financial support for new developments than other construction materials. RBD developments are being conducted in Similar, but largely independent, Europe, North America, New Zealand and Australia. Experts from these regions were brought together to exchange information on current work, propose new developments and to provide means of international coordination. Thus, this ARW provided an opportunity to advance the cause of RBD of engineered wood structures.

The papers contained in this volume were presented orally at the seventh POLYMODEL conference, held at Sunderland Polytechnic in the United King dom in May 1984 and sponsored by Barclays Bank PLC and Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. The conferences are organised annually by the North East of England Polytechnic's Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation Group - POLYMODEL. The Group is a non-profit making organisation based on the mathematics department of the three polytechnics in the region and has membership drawn from those educational institutions and from regional industry. Its objective is to promote research and collaboration in mathematical and computer-based modelling. After a short introductory chapter, the volume may be considered as dividing naturally into four parts. Chapters 2 to 5 constitute the first part on Tides, Storm Surges and Coastal Circulations which deals with the hydrodynamics of coastal seas. Chapters 6 to 11 concern Coastal Engine ering Modelling and discuss such coastal phenomena as beach erosion, sediment transport, and non-linear waves. The third part (Chapters 12 to 16) on Offshore Structures considers sea structures in general and the connections between the structures (hoses, moorings, pipelines) in particular. The last two chapters focus on Offshore Corrosion problems.

This is the first in a new series of publications arlslng out of the work of the Committee on Challenges of Modern Society of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The CCMS was established in 1969 with a mandate to examine practical ways of improving the exchange of experience among mem ber nations of the Alliance in the task of creating a better envir onment for their societies. It was charged with considering "spe cific problems of the human environment with the deliberate objec tive of stimulating action by member governments". It may come as a surprise to some that NATO - generally thought of as being an organization devoted solely to matters of defence - should concern itself with the environment at all. But this is to overlook Article 2 of the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949, which expressly provides that member count ries should contribute towards the furt her development of peaceful and friendly internat ional relations by promoting conditions of stability and well being. This concern is reflected in many non-military areas, in addition to the environmental one.
