The Amazon region is the focus of intense conflict between conservationists concerned with deforestation and advocates of agro-industrial development. This book focuses on the contributions of environmental organizations to the preservation of Brazilian Amazonia. It reveals how environmental organizations such as Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WWF and others have fought fiercely to stop deforestation in the region. It documents how the history of frontier expansion and environmental struggle in the region is linked to Brazil’s position in an evolving capitalist world-economy. It is shown how Brazil’s effort to become a developed country has led successive Brazilian governments to devise development projects for Amazonia. The author analyses how globalization has led to the expansion of international commodity chains in the region, particularly for mineral ores, soybeans and beef. He shows how environmental organizations have politicized these commodity chains as weapons of conservation, through boycotting certain products, while other pro-development groups within Brazil claim that such organizations threaten Brazil's sovereignty over its own resources.

Resultado de pesquisa de doutorado, aborda as políticas públicas de energia elétrica e sua interface com as questões socioambientais. Embora a energia elétrica possibilite o acesso a outros bens e serviços públicos, também apresenta estreita vinculação com desastres ecológicos e alterações, muitas vezes irreversíveis, à natureza e ao próprio homem. Por isso, a garantia do acesso à energia elétrica deve ter como alicerce a construção de estratégias que valorizem a vocação social, econômica e energética de cada território, visando à redução dos impactos socioambientais decorrentes da implantação de novos empreendimentos de geração. Ainda mais quando se trata de uma região que apresenta características peculiares e singulares. Usando a metodologia de avaliação, apresenta as nuances do cumprimento da função social da política de universalização da energia elétrica, marcando um contraponto entre o atendimento ou inclusão dos povos da Amazônia, a partir do acesso à energia elétrica. A avaliação aqui proposta se constitui enquanto ferramenta de aprendizagem e de valor pelo que a Região representa em termos socioambientais e econômicos. Sendo assim, foram elaborados indicadores de sustentabilidade, que contribuíram para a construção da matriz MISPPE podendo, de certa forma, ser usada no processo de implementação e execução de políticas.
