To put the world of linear algebra to advanced use, it is not enough to merely understand the theory; there is a significant gap between the theory of linear algebra and its myriad expressions in nearly every computational domain. To bridge this gap, it is essential to process the theory by solving many exercises, thus obtaining a firmer grasp of its diverse applications. Similarly, from a theoretical perspective, diving into the literature on advanced linear algebra often reveals more and more topics that are deferred to exercises instead of being treated in the main text. As exercises grow more complex and numerous, it becomes increasingly important to provide supporting material and guidelines on how to solve them, supporting students’ learning process. This book provides precisely this type of supporting material for the textbook “Numerical Linear Algebra and Matrix Factorizations,” published as Vol. 22 of Springer’s Texts in Computational Science and Engineering series. Instead of omitting details or merely providing rough outlines, this book offers detailed proofs, and connects the solutions to the corresponding results in the textbook. For the algorithmic exercises the utmost level of detail is provided in the form of MATLAB implementations. Both the textbook and solutions are self-contained. This book and the textbook are of similar length, demonstrating that solutions should not be considered a minor aspect when learning at advanced levels.

A hands-on introduction to the theoretical and computational aspects of linear algebra using Mathematica® Many topics in linear algebra are simple, yet computationally intensive, and computer algebra systems such as Mathematica® are essential not only for learning to apply the concepts to computationally challenging problems, but also for visualizing many of the geometric aspects within this field of study. Principles of Linear Algebra with Mathematica uniquely bridges the gap between beginning linear algebra and computational linear algebra that is often encountered in applied settings, and the commands required to solve complex and computationally challenging problems using Mathematica are provided. The book begins with an introduction to the commands and programming guidelines for working with Mathematica. Next, the authors explore linear systems of equations and matrices, applications of linear systems and matrices, determinants, inverses, and Cramer's rule. Basic linear algebra topics, such as vectors, dot product, cross product, and vector projection are explored, as well as a unique variety of more advanced topics including rotations in space, 'rolling' a circle along a curve, and the TNB Frame. Subsequent chapters feature coverage of linear transformations from Rn to Rm, the geometry of linear and affine transformations, with an exploration of their effect on arclength, area, and volume, least squares fits, and pseudoinverses. Mathematica is used to enhance concepts and is seamlessly integrated throughout the book through symbolic manipulations, numerical computations, graphics in two and three dimensions, animations, and programming. Each section concludes with standard problems in addition to problems that were specifically designed to be solved with Mathematica, allowing readers to test their comprehension of the presented material. All related Mathematica code is available on a corresponding website, along with solutions to problems and additional topical resources. Extensively class-tested to ensure an accessible presentation, Principles of Linear Algebra with Mathematica is an excellent book for courses on linear algebra at the undergraduate level. The book is also an ideal reference for students and professionals who would like to gain a further understanding of the use of Mathematica to solve linear algebra problems.

Rooted in a pedagogically successful problem-solving approach to linear algebra, the present work fills a gap in the literature that is sharply divided between elementary texts and books that are too advanced to appeal to a wide audience. It clearly develops the theoretical foundations of vector spaces, linear equations, matrix algebra, eigenvectors, and orthogonality, while simultaneously emphasizing applications and connections to fields such as biology, economics, computer graphics, electrical engineering, cryptography, and political science. Ideal as an introduction to linear algebra, the extensive exercises and well-chosen applications also make this text suitable for advanced courses at the junior or senior undergraduate level. Furthermore, it can serve as a colorful supplementary problem book, reference, or self-study manual for professional scientists and mathematicians. Complete with bibliography and index, "Essential Linear Algebra with Applications" is a natural bridge between pure and applied mathematics and the natural and social sciences, appropriate for any student or researcher who needs a strong footing in the theory, problem-solving, and model-building that are the subject’s hallmark.

Linear algebra is a living, active branch of mathematics which is central to almost all other areas of mathematics, both pure and applied, as well as to computer science, to the physical, biological, and social sciences, and to engineering. It encompasses an extensive corpus of theoretical results as well as a large and rapidly-growing body of computational techniques. Unfortunately, in the past decade, the content of linear algebra courses required to complete an undergraduate degree in mathematics has been depleted to the extent that they fail to provide a sufficient theoretical or computational background. Students are not only less able to formulate or even follow mathematical proofs, they are also less able to understand the mathematics of the numerical algorithms they need for applications. Certainly, the material presented in the average undergraduate course is insufficient for graduate study. This book is intended to fill the gap which has developed by providing enough theoretical and computational material to allow the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student to overcome this deficiency and be able to work independently or in advanced courses. The book is intended to be used either as a self-study guide, a textbook for a course in advanced linear algebra, or as a reference book. It is also designed to prepare a student for the linear algebra portion of prelim exams or PhD qualifying exams. The volume is self-contained to the extent that it does not assume any previous formal knowledge of linear algebra, though the reader is assumed to have been exposed, at least informally, to some of the basic ideas and techniques, such as manipulation of small matrices and the solution of small systems of linear equations over the real numbers. More importantly, it assumes a seriousness of purpose, considerable motivation, and a modicum of mathematical sophistication on the part of the reader. In the latest edition, new major theorems have been added, as well as many new examples. There are over 130 additional exercises and many of the previous exercises have been revised or rewritten. In addition, a large number of additional biographical notes and thumbnail portraits of mathematicians have been included.

Linear Algebra As An Introduction To Abstract Mathematics written by Isaiah Lankham and has been published by World Scientific Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-30 with Mathematics categories.

This is an introductory textbook designed for undergraduate mathematics majors with an emphasis on abstraction and in particular, the concept of proofs in the setting of linear algebra. Typically such a student would have taken calculus, though the only prerequisite is suitable mathematical grounding. The purpose of this book is to bridge the gap between the more conceptual and computational oriented undergraduate classes to the more abstract oriented classes. The book begins with systems of linear equations and complex numbers, then relates these to the abstract notion of linear maps on finite-dimensional vector spaces, and covers diagonalization, eigenspaces, determinants, and the Spectral Theorem. Each chapter concludes with both proof-writing and computational exercises.

This second edition has been almost completely rewritten to create a textbook designed so instructors can determine the degree of rigor and flexible enough for a one- or two-semester course. The author achieves this by increasing the level of sophistication as the text proceeds from traditional first principles in the early chapters to theory and applications in the later ones, and by ensuring that material at any point is not dependent on subsequent developments. While theorems and proofs are highlighted, the emphasis is on applications. The author provides carefully constructed exercises ranging from easy to moderately challenging to difficult, many of which condition students for topics that follow. An accompanying book, Matrix Analysis and Applied Linear Algebra, Second Edition, Study and Solutions Guide, contains complete solutions and discussions of each exercise; and historical remarks that focus on the personalities of the individuals who created and contributed to the subject's development. This book is designed for use in either a one- or two-term linear algebra course. It can also serve as a reference to anyone who needs to use or apply linear algebra.
