First published in 1985, Lanczos Algorithms for Large Symmetric Eigenvalue Computations; Vol. 1: Theory presents background material, descriptions, and supporting theory relating to practical numerical algorithms for the solution of huge eigenvalue problems. This book deals with "symmetric" problems. However, in this book, "symmetric" also encompasses numerical procedures for computing singular values and vectors of real rectangular matrices and numerical procedures for computing eigenelements of nondefective complex symmetric matrices. Although preserving orthogonality has been the golden rule in linear algebra, most of the algorithms in this book conform to that rule only locally, resulting in markedly reduced memory requirements. Additionally, most of the algorithms discussed separate the eigenvalue (singular value) computations from the corresponding eigenvector (singular vector) computations. This separation prevents losses in accuracy that can occur in methods which, in order to be able to compute further into the spectrum, use successive implicit deflation by computed eigenvector or singular vector approximations.

Die Maschinendynamik ist in den Lehrplänen aller Hochschulfachrichtungen des konstruktiven Maschinenbaus in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik verankert. Sie baut auf der Technischen Mechanik auf und stellt für die Studenten eine unmittel bare Konfrontierung mit typischen dynamischen Problemen ihres Fachgebietes dar. Es handelt sich also um eine Maschinendynamik, die sowohl dynamische Probleme des Energiemaschinenbaus (Kolbenmaschinen und Turbomaschinen), des Verarbei tungsmaschinenbaus (z. B. Druckmaschinen, Textilmaschinen, Verpackungsma schinen), der Fördergeräte, Landmaschinen und Fahrzeuge sowie des Anlagenbaus anspricht. Die bisher vorliegende Literatur auf diesem Gebiet ist entweder zu fachspezifisch oder sie geht zu wenig auf die unmittelbar in der Technischen Mechanik (Grundstudium) vermittelten Kenntnisse ein. In vielen Fällen entspricht sie auch nicht mehr dem praktischen Bedürfnis der Bezugnahme auf EDV-Programme. Diese Lücke soll das vorliegende Lehrbuch schließen und die Brücke zur Spezialliteratur bestimmter Fach richtungen (z. B. Kolben- und Turbomaschinenbau) schlagen. Bei seiner Konzipierung standen wir vor der Wahl, entweder eine allgemeine Schwin gungslehre diskreter linearer Systeme voranzustellen und dann in Abschnitten der Maschinendynamik darauf zu verweisen oder jeden Abschnitt relativ selbständig aufzubauen und am Schluß eine allgemein gültige Darstellung im Sinne der Schwin gungslehre zu geben. Wir haben uns konsequent für den zweiten Weg entschieden, obwohl uns diese Entscheidung nicht leicht gefallen ist. Den Ausschlag dazu gab die Überlegung, daß nicht von jedem Maschinenbauingenieur verlangt werden kann, daß er erst dann ein spezielles Problem anfassen darf, wenn er die Schwingungslehre beherrscht.
