"Il testo qui pubblicato, noto anche come i Commentari della Cina, è il resoconto dell’avventurosa penetrazione, fra il 1582 e il 1610, della prima missione cristiana in Cina che abbia lasciato traccia durevole. Esso fu scritto da Matteo Ricci (Macerata 1552-Pechino 1610), il principale artefice dell'impresa, nell’ultimo scorcio della sua vita, e completato da Nicholas Trigault con alcune informazioni tratte da appunti ricciani e con la narrazione della morte dell’autore e delle trattative per la sua sepoltura in terra cinese. Il primo libro contiene una descrizione sistematica e dettagliata della vita, usi, abitudini e istituzioni della Cina dell’epoca, tanto da rendere l'opera per secoli la fonte principale attraverso cui l'Europa ha attinto notizie su quell’impero. Nei libri successivi si ha quindi la narrazione dell'impresa, con le sue fasi per lungo tempo alterne e il coronamento con l’ingresso e la fondazione di una missione a Pechino. Si vede bene quanti pochi mezzi materiali i missionari abbiano avuto a disposizione, ma anche lo spiegamento di forze intellettuali e culturali, l'acume diplomatico, e spesso l'astuzia, con cui essi supplirono a tale mancanza. Al di là degli espedienti più noti – l'apprendimento tempestivo del cinese, il travestimento da bonzi, poi da letterati confuciani –, i gesuiti mirarono in primo luogo a mostrare l'ampiezza e la profondità dei risultati raggiunti dalla cultura in Occidente. Lasciando inizialmente a margine la dottrina, Matteo Ricci – reduce dalla più avanzata formazione scientifica che un uomo della seconda metà del '500 potesse avere – si curò principalmente della traduzione in cinese dei libri di Euclide, della stesura di opere a carattere morale-filosofico, della costruzione di strumenti per la misurazione terrestre e astronomica, dell’edizione di mappamondi, dell'introduzione di nuovi criteri calendaristici; soprattutto della costruzione di orologi – perizia grazie alla quale, innanzi tutto, furono accettati alla corte di Pechino. Dall’altro lato, egli approfondì la conoscenza dei maggiori classici cinesi e delle diverse 'religioni' diffuse nel territorio, per potersi confrontare ad armi pari su qualsiasi questione gli venisse posta. Il suo atteggiamento aperto e sensibile ai problemi della comunicazione con una cultura totalmente 'altra' può essere una delle cause per cui, almeno fino all’inizio del '900, il nome di Ricci è stato singolarmente dimenticato e la sua opera ascritta senza troppi scrupoli a Nicholas Trigault, che peraltro l'aveva resa disponibile in una propria versione latina. Il testo, oltre alla sua efficacia narrativa, alla forza dello stile che unisce in modo sorprendente la concreta secchezza del giudizio con la vastità della prospettiva culturale, e lo iscrive a pieno titolo nella tradizione di classici come Erodoto, Tacito o Tito Livio, è soprattutto il resoconto dell’impatto fra due tradizioni millenarie il cui esito è ancora tutto da interpretare e i cui insegnamenti potrebbero costituire una guida preziosa nel crescente disorientamento determinato dalle odierne figure dell'estraneità."--P.
