Despite centuries of scholarly and popular engagement, much confusion still hangs over Jesus’ Olivet Discourse. There is no consensus on the nature and meaning of the disciples’ question in Matt 24:3. How is the temple’s fate related to the parousia or second coming of Jesus? Is the Great Tribulation past, present, or future? Will Christians be raptured to heaven? Should you rather prefer to be “left behind”? Combining inductive and discourse grammar approaches as bases for literary structure and analysis, this study is a holistic and compelling fresh interpretation of Jesus’ eschatological discourse that provides answers to these questions. The author shows that extant interpretive frameworks fail to adequately account for the biblical data. Moreover, and unlike the available treatments, the study sheds light on the discourse’s structural and theological function within Matthew’s Gospel as a whole and how it coheres with New Testament teaching in general.

The present study explores the role of heavenly imagery and symbolism in the Gospel of Matthew. Historical background and narrative criticism are my main methods because the Old Testament and Second Temple Jewish texts form the historical backgrounds for the understanding of Matthew’s heaven and Matthew uses heavenly imagery and symbolism to highlight his main themes in the gospel as a whole. This study investigates Matthew’s distinctive materials and important texts having to do with heaven, exploring their meanings and establishing their roles in each narrative section. Matthew describes heaven as the space where certain events reveal God’s plan of salvation. Heaven is associated with such key matters as revelation and judgment. Each major discourse of Matthew focuses on heavenly imagery with judgment at its end, culminating in the parable of the sheep and the goats (Matt 25:31–46).

The many crises of the high and late Middle Ages in Europe saw a resurgence of interest in apocalypticism and millenarianism. Thy Kingdom Come is a panoramic overview of the present reign of Jesus Christ at the right hand of God the Father and of the future consummation of that reign. It presents three authoritative apostolic New Testament guidelines for the interpretation of the Old Testament prophecies. It fairly examines the three main positions on the millennium and offers scriptural conclusions that incorporate elements of truth from all three. Detailed expositions of the 110th Psalm and the book of Revelation are based on the apostolic guidelines. Harold Patterson was born in Portland, Oregon in 1920. In 1942 he was appointed as a Patrol Inspector in the Immigration Border Patrol, and was assigned to work on the Mexican border in Southern California. His career as a Border Patrolman was interrupted by military service during WW II. During his military service he met and married Shirley Van Hamm in Denver, Colorado. In 1951 Harold and Shirley enrolled in BIOLA Bible College in Los Angeles. After graduation they accepted teaching positions in Taholah, Washington on the Quinault Indian Reservation. They remained in Taholah for 17 years and served the Indian community in various ways during that time. To upgrade his professional skills Harold earned the Bachelor of Education degree at Seattle Pacific University and the Master of Education degree at the University of Washington. In 1972 Mr. Patterson was appointed Associate Supervisor of Indian Education for the State of Washington, and served in that capacity for nine years. He also served as a lay minister and Bible teacher in various churches. In 1972 the Pattersons moved to a ranch at Brooklyn, Washington. Throughout the years Harold maintained a very close relationship with the Quinault people, and in 2005 he was adopted as an enrolled member of the Quinault Indian Nation.

Here is a challenge to New Testament scholars to engage in a fresh analysis of Q. The authors argue that recent American study of Q has been dominated by those trained in form-criticism and oriented to Hellenistic rather than Judean culture, resulting in the extreme atomization of the Q sayings and reconstructions of Jesus and his first followers as Cynics, and in the de-politicization and de-judaization of the Q materials and Jesus. Also determinative of the current situation has been the assumption in New Testament studies of textuality, of an ethos of written communication and of textual models for analysis. However, as is recently becoming clear from studies of oral and written communication, the communication situation of Jesus and his first followers was almost certainly oral. Horsley and Draper therefore contend that it is time the interpretation of Q took seriously the oral communication environment in which this material developed and continued before Matthew and Luke incorporated it into their Gospels. This book, then, applies approaches to oral-derived literature from oral theorists, socio-linguistics, ethnopoetics, and the ethnography of speaking to the Q materials. The result is a developing theory of oral performance that generates meaning as symbols articulated in the appropriate performance situation resonate with the cultural tradition in which the hearers are grounded. Richard A. Horsley is Professor of Classics and Religion at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Jonathan A. Draper teaches at the University of Natal, South Africa.
