Jahrhunderts zeichnet sich das Interesse am Orient - oder genauer das Interesse an dem, was deutsche Literaten unter dem "Orient" verstanden oder imaginiert haben - durch zahlreiche literarische Schreibprojekte aus. Ein prominenter Vertreter ist Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866), dem aber eine "Sonderstellung" zuzuweisen ist, da er orientalische Texte in seiner Person als Philologe, Übersetzer und Dichter bearbeitet. Seine obigen Verse sind nicht nur als eine Stellungnahme zu seiner Person als "Experte" zu verstehen, sondern liefern ebenfalls einen Hinweis darauf, dass seine Texte aufgrund seiner Kompetenzen wesentliche Unterschiede zu Übersetzungen und literarischen Texten anderer Autoren aufweisen. Rückerts Intentionen sind der Erhalt des "orientalischen Geistes", das Schaffen eines neuen Zugangs zur Welt des Orients und das Aufdecken von Gemeinsamkeiten im interkulturellen und -religiösen Dialog. Zur Veranschaulichung des reziproken Verhältnisses zwischen Philologie, Übersetzung und Dichtung sind Textbeispiele aus drei verschiedenen Werken ausgewählt: die Koranübersetzung, die Rückert weniger als heiligen denn als literarischen Text behandelt; die Übertragung der Ghaselen Rumis, bei der er auf die Übersetzung von Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall zurückgreift; und die Gedichtsammlung "Östliche Rosen" als Eigenproduktion Rückerts, die er in der Rolle des Mystikers Mohammed Schemsed-din Hafis dichtet.
