WINNER OF THE 2023 GRATEFUL AMERICAN BOOK PRIZE FOR BEST YOUNG ADULT HISTORICAL FICTION! FINALIST FOR THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BOOK AWARD! Mattie and the Machine is a fictionalized yet historically accurate account of Margaret E. Knight's fight to obtain recognition as a 19th century female inventor (she would eventually be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006). This entertaining tale is filled with romance, competition, and treachery, and features a feisty and brilliant female heroine who excels in STEM-related tasks. In 1868 New England, fifteen-year-old Mattie is a mechanic in Columbia Paper's all-female bag division. With paper bag sales booming after the Civil War, her boss expands the division by hiring men from his old Army regiment, including the mechanic Frank. Sparks instantly fly between Mattie and Frank, and their budding romance has her walking on air--until she discovers Frank's pay is higher than hers. In fact, all the men receive thirty percent more than their female counterparts. The boss's rationale? Men are inherently better with machines. Determined to prove him wrong, Mattie proposes a bet: If she can build a machine that fully automates their paper-bag-making process, the women will receive equal pay. If she fails, she'll resign as mechanic. The boss accepts, with one condition: Frank will also build a machine, and Mattie's must beat his. Mattie's determination as she struggles with the technical challenges she encounters while taking her invention from initial concept to working prototype--in addition to the overwhelming prejudice she faces in the workplace and, eventually, the courtroom--makes her story an inspiring feminist narrative. Mattie and the Machine also includes an appendix with Margaret E. Knight's actual patent application and drawings for her Bag Machine.

Spring has come to Munchem Academy. The snow is melting, the roof is leaking, and Mr. Larimore is now in charge. Mattie is worried, though. Mr. Larimore is taking the whole "let's help Headmaster Rooney get back on his feet" thing seriously, and he's whispering all sorts of suggestions to the highly suggestible Rooney. Then there's the matter of the school's weather. It's getting . . . strange. Mini-tornados sweep up out of nowhere. Rain pours inside. And there was that snowstorm-that yellow snowstorm-that lasted for two days. Once Mattie, Caroline, and Eliot figure out what's causing the chaos (the Weather-matic 9000), who's causing the chaos (Mr. Larimore), and why it's a chaotic an idea (weather weapons!), they need to act. Fast. There's only one thing to do: save Mr. Larimore-and the world-from Mr. Larimore. It's a tall order for a short kid, but Mattie has a plan. After all, what's a little breaking and entering among friends?

Poetic Operations written by micha cárdenas and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-13 with Social Science categories.

In Poetic Operations artist and theorist micha cárdenas considers contemporary digital media, artwork, and poetry in order to articulate trans of color strategies for safety and survival. Drawing on decolonial theory, women of color feminism, media theory, and queer of color critique, cárdenas develops a method she calls algorithmic analysis. Understanding algorithms as sets of instructions designed to perform specific tasks (like a recipe), she breaks them into their component parts, called operations. By focusing on these operations, cárdenas identifies how trans and gender-non-conforming artists, especially artists of color, rewrite algorithms to counter violence and develop strategies for liberation. In her analyses of Giuseppe Campuzano's holographic art, Esdras Parra's and Kai Cheng Thom's poetry, Mattie Brice's digital games, Janelle Monáe's music videos, and her own artistic practice, cárdenas shows how algorithmic analysis provides new modes of understanding the complex processes of identity and oppression and the intersection of gender, sexuality, and race.

Mattie Larimore used to be the good son -- compared to his brother, Carter, at least. But that was before Mattie stole a train, got caught, and was sent to Munchem Academy, the world's greatest reform school. Or is it? Because the kids at Munchem don't seem very, well . . . reformed. Mostly, they seem terrifying, and the whole place is just a little off. Mattie has to get out. Fast. But it may not be fast enough. Headmaster Rooney is tired of dealing with problem students. His solution, however, may prove to be too radical. When Carter is suddenly next in line for Rooney's master plan, Mattie and the renegade siblings, Eliot and Caroline, must band together to save him and the rest of Munchem's students before all is lost. Suddenly, Mattie-the good son-must find his inner hero and fight back. And that's how the world's greatest thief got his start.
