The Naturalists wrote from a «scientific» point of view, and no science had more currency in society in the late nineteenth century than Darwin's theory of evolution. Until now, this motif in Guy de Maupassant has escaped critical attention. Maupassant's Fiction and the Darwinian View of Life examines evolutionary theory in the literature in a way accessible to students of literature and science alike. It first explains the theoretical basis and Maupassant's affinity for it, then studies one short story, «La Ficelle», in its entirety, proposing a new and interesting interpretation based on evidence read through a Darwinian lens. The remaining chapters organize a lively Darwinian reading of Maupassant according to topics such as natural selection, heredity, and materialism. The book shows that Darwinism and the economic variety of Social Darwinism figure significantly in Maupassant's fiction. It is a must for students and teachers of Naturalism and Darwinism across the liberal arts.

"Une Vie" is a novel written by the French author Guy de Maupassant. It was first published in 1883 and is one of Maupassant's most well-known works. The English translation of the title is "A Life." The novel follows the life of Jeanne de Lamare, a young woman from a noble family in Normandy, from her youth to old age. It explores the challenges, joys, and disappointments she experiences throughout her life, providing a detailed portrayal of French society during the 19th century. In addition to "Une Vie," Guy de Maupassant wrote numerous short stories that showcase his mastery of the form. His stories often depict the complexities of human nature, relationships, and the influence of social and economic factors on individuals. The collection "Une Vie and Other Stories" likely includes a selection of Maupassant's short stories in addition to the titular novel "Une Vie." His short stories are celebrated for their keen observations of human behavior and the vivid depiction of life in 19th-century France.

Excerpt from The Life Work of Henri René Guy De Maupassant Old Roland had sat motionless for a quarter of an hour, gazing intently into the water, every now and then pulling gently on his line, which trailed idly in the sea. "Zut!" he at last suddenly exclaimed. Madame Roland, who had been dozing in the stern of the boat beside Madame Rosemilly, - the latter the guest of the fishing party, - woke up, and turning to her husband, said: "What's the matter, Gerome?" "Not a single bite," replied the old man in a rage. "I have caught nothing since midday. Men should always go fishing by themselves. Women are never ready to start till it is too late." His two sons, Pierre and Jean, one on the port, the other on the starboard side, each with a fishing line twisted round his forefinger, began to laugh. Chapter I "Tschah!" exclaimed old Roland suddenly, after he had remained motionless for a quarter of an hour, his eyes fixed on the water, while now and again he very slightly lifted his line sunk in the sea. Mme. Roland, dozing in the stern by the side of Mme. Rosemilly, who had been invited to join the fishing-party, woke up, and turning her head to look at her husband, said: "Well, well! Gerome." And the old fellow replied in a fury: "They do not bite at all. I have taken nothing since noon. Only men should ever go fishing. Women always delay the start till it is too late." His two sons, Pierre and Jean, who each held a line twisted round his forefinger, one to port and one to starboard, both began to laugh, and Jean remarked: "You are not very polite to our guest, father." M. Roland was abashed, and apologized. "I beg your pardon, Mme. Rosemilly, but that is just like me. I invite ladies because I like to be with them, and then, as soon as I feel the water beneath me, I think of nothing but the fish." Mme. Roland was now quite awake, and gazing with a softened look at the wide horizon of cliff and sea. "You have had good sport, all the same," she murmured. But her husband shook his head in denial, though at the same time he glanced complacently at the basket where the fish caught by the three men were still breathing spasmodically, with a low rustle of clammy scales and struggling fins, and dull, ineffectual efforts, gasping in the fatal air. Old Roland took the basket between his knees and tilted it up, making the silver heap of creatures slide to the edge that he might see those lying at the bottom, and their death-throes became more convulsive, while the strong smell of their bodies, a wholesome reek of brine, came up from the full depths of the creel. The old fisherman sniffed it eagerly, ...
