In this volume, Professor Wiles continues the questioning of the Christian tradition made familiar through The Remaking of Christian Doctrine in a number of essays, some of which appear in print here for the first time. A first group defines the nature of the task of the critical theologian, and explores the way in which he pursues it in two important areas. Then two papers, The Patristic Appeal to Tradition' and 'Historical Religion' discuss the place of tradition in Christianity. A final group, prefaced by an essay on the Holy Spirit, considers the Bible and the sacraments as purveyors of tradition: The Uses of Holy Scripture', 'Eucharistic Theology-The Value of Diversity', and 'Sacramental Unity in the Early Church.'

In an age when so many of the particular cases in which communities or individuals find themselves led to speak of God's acting prove to be cases which appear to others both morally and spiritually unacceptable, we need to give thought to the deeper underlying issue. Can God be said to act in the world at all? Does God even exist?

Maurice Wiles was Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford from 1970-1991. To celebrate his seventieth birthday, a group of distinguished friends and colleagues have written this important series of original and perceptive essays on the twin themes of making and remaking Christian doctrine. The topics covered in this thought-provoking collection range from the notion of divine action in Hebrew Wisdom literature to reflections on the nature of the ministry, from the concept of God and the doctrines of Christology and of the Trinity to the character of theological reflection, and from revelation and tradition to the "lex orandi," the nature of interpretation in religion and the historical basis of theological understanding.

What Is Theology written by Maurice F. Wiles and has been published by London ; New York : Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1976 with Religion categories.

"What is Christian theology? Is it, as some might claim, based on faith in such a way that it has no proper place alongside other academic disciplines? Or is it, as others might complain, about certain forms of it, so open an enquiry that it is liable to undermine the living reality of faith? The status of theology is what lies behind this book. It is not an outline of Christian theology or a handbook of Christian belief--but an account of the issues involved in its study. In the first half of the book these issues are approached from then inside, by looking at the way in which the various aspects of theology are studied--the Bible, Church history, doctrine, the philosophy of religion. The second half describes their relationship with other disciplines and shows how developments in the natural sciences, psychology, sociology, and history modify and inform the work of the theologian." - Publisher

Archetypal Heresy written by Maurice Wiles and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-08-08 with Religion categories.

Arianism has always been regarded as the archetypal heresy. It did affirm the divinity of Christ as the Son of God, but, unlike orthodoxy, it regarded the divinity as secondary and inferior to that of the Father, the one supreme God. Recently many scholars have presented a more positive view of the religious intentions of Arianism than has been customary in the past. Yet the Nicene Creed, which was designed explicitly to outlaw Arianism, remains one of the primary expressions of Christian orthodoxy. Maurice Wiles traces the history of how Arianism has been viewed in later Christian thought, particularly where scholars or religious groups have adopted broadly Arian views. The main example of a re-emergence of Arian ideas is among the leaders of new scientific Englightenment in the early eighteenth century, especially Sir Isaac Newton and his disciples, William Whiston and Samuel Clarke. The longest section of the book deals with how and why their beliefs took this form, and why this approach disappeared again around the end of the century. A final section considers the interaction of belief and cricital judgement in British Arian scholarship during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Christian Theology And Inter Religious Dialogue written by Maurice Wiles and has been published by Trinity Press International this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Religion categories.

"That Professor Wiles has now turned from the field of Christian doctrine and its history, for which he is so well known, to that of inter-faith dialogue is an indication of the importance which that subject is now assuming. This is not a book, he confesses, which he had expected to write, but in recent years, he has increasingly felt that the close co-existence of different faith-communities in the modern world is as important a background to Christian theology as the rise of the scientific world-view." "In his book, which arises out of lectures at Manchester and Yale universities, Professor Wiles begins by asking whether acceptance of the possibility of open dialogue with other religions is not a desertion of the way in which church has understood its faith down the ages. He then goes on to argue that pressure to acknowledge other religions is only one of several pressures arising out of changes in contemporary knowledge and experience of the world which Christians face today. A third chapter examines how Karl Rahner tried to incorporate these changes into a coherent theological position, and the last chapter builds on this approach and offers a personal account of a Christian theology for dialogue." "At a time of increasing conservatism and opposition to interfaith activity in the churches, here is encouragement to those who believe that narrow christocentricity is not the way forward."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
