Organized chronologically, this volume analyzes the dynamics, convergences, and ideological clashes that have given life to the most significant movements of the twentieth century and today to the season of recent phantasmagoric buildings of the so-called Star System. Illuminating and insightful, the volume is a much needed guide for students, educators, or anyone interested in architecture. Written as if it were a novel, in clear and compelling way, The History of Architecture from 1900 until Today examines the main buildings that were designed in more than 120 years of history, those famous and appreciated unanimously by critics, and those that, although of great value, were neglected for ideological reasons. Read in its contradictions, architecture becomes a fresco that tells us about our complicated history, our multiple tensions, our filled and unfulfilled desires.

Modern Art Britain And The Great War written by Sue Malvern and has been published by Paul Mellon Ctr for Studies this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Art categories.

The First World War had a great impact on British modernism and twentieth-century art. This book examines how the British state recruited some of its most controversial artists to produce official art as part of propaganda and how their work gave witnessed testimony to the trauma of a war that later generations would redeem in acts of remembrance. The principal means by which artists visually recorded their war experiences, says Sue Malvern, were the official employment schemes set up by the government in 1916. Challenging prevailing opinion, she argues that these schemes were surprisingly liberal, giving modern artists unprecedented scope to create new audiences for their art. Official art was not just visual propaganda, but work of compelling quality and value, and the issues it raised extended into the post-war period and beyond.

The notion that the practice of abstraction was confined to Western Europe while a stereotyped form of figuration defined the art of the Eastern bloc continues to dominate art historical accounts of public sculpture of the post-war period. This book offers a number of alternative readings, and demonstrates strategic uses of figuration and abstraction across East and West. Encompassing sites of memory (including war memorials and Holocaust memorials), state, civic and corporate sculpture, as well as temporary and unexecuted projects, the book shows that persuasive advocates of figuration were to be found in the West, while in the East imaginative experiments in abstraction were proposed in the name of Social Realism. Presenting fresh insights into sculptural practice in the period between 1945 and 1968, this book brings together a wide range of authors, some of whom have never before been published in English. Their essays are complemented by extracts from documentary texts, which give a flavour of contemporary debates, and a biographical section includes entries on many sculptors who will be unfamiliar to an English-speaking audience.

Informal written by Cecil Balmond and has been published by Prestel Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Architecture categories.

Balmond is making the transition from structural engineer working alongside other architects to an architect in his own right. His structural thinking differs from that of others in his field, in its completely innovative conception of the engineer's contribution to architecture. The plasticity of architectural plans is enhanced through a decisive promotion of their structural designs. The borderline between structure and architecture thus becomes increasingly blurred. This process is explained in detail in "Informal" by reference to eight seminal projects. Balmond elucidates the theoretical basis of his engineering and architectural solutions, and his sketches transcend purely technical illustration - they are key to his approach. "Informal" invites readers to rethink their understanding of the relationships between architecture, design and engineering.

How architects can move toward a more just, harmonious, and non-exploitative designed environment. Architecture--and architects--have immense influence in defining the way we live, work, and interact as communities. Architecture, in fact, could be described as the very process through which our collective priorities take shape in the environment. Today, buildings generate nearly forty percent of annual global greenhouse gas emissions. As awareness of the true cost of inaction grows, every human activity will be rethought--and the material economy of the building industry is one of the places where new thinking is most urgently needed. Architects have the opportunity to reclaim their relevance by becoming the advocates and masterminds of a new way of building. What kind of architecture will be born once its primary purpose is serving communities and not capital accumulation? How can we compel the market to factor in the true long-term costs of construction and material production? How can we reduce the sense of abstraction that separates "consumers" of architecture from the environmental damage wrought at the sites of material extraction? How can communities become fully involved in every stage of the production of architecture, not just its final consumption? This book attempts to frame the problem, and begins the process of delineating alternative paths forward. The first step architects can take towards a more just, harmonious, and non-exploitative designed environment is to redesign themselves, and what the word "architect" stands for.
