Ubicada en dos ciudades emergentes de Ecuador, la trama se desenvuelve con un protagonista (mismo autor), quien conoce a José Aguirre, agente secreto de policía con cualidades venidas a menos en la moderna sociedad globalizada, egoísta y excluyente. Esta amistad se complementa con la pícara y locuaz presencia del policía Julio Zambrano y la comprensiva solidaridad de Mónica Valdivieso, esposa de José. En medio, el amor esquivo, fuerte e imposible aparece en la vida del protagonista bajo la imagen de una sugestiva mujer, Haydee, prostituta como consecuencia del sistema social, quien vive bajo presión y amenaza de alias "culebra", delincuente a quien la vida le significa nada. Las circunstancias hacen que José y Julio se involucren en la persecución de una banda de criminales que días antes habían asalto el Banco Continental de la ciudad de Milagro, en cuyo intento muere el agente José Aguirre a manos de "culebra", que resultó ser el jefe de la banda. Mientras tanto, Haydee desaparece súbitamente y las "coincidencias del destino" hacen que nuestro protagonista la encuentre casualmente en un cabaret sucio y nauseabundo. Es allí donde los sentimientos de Edison sufren un sacudón emocional ante la disyuntiva de despreciarla o perdonarla. Llega a entender la razón de esta mujer para llevar esta vida; sin embargo, también siente impotencia al descubrir quién es su drogadicto proxeneta. Los acontecimientos se deslizan repentinamente y el final sorprende al mismo protagonista.
