With this practical book, you’ll learn effective ways to engage students in reading and writing by teaching them narrative nonfiction. By engaging adolescents in narrative, literary, or creative nonfiction, they can cultivate a greater understanding of themselves, the world around them, and what it means to feel empathy for others. This book will guide you to first structure a reading unit around a narrative nonfiction text, and then develop lessons and activities for students to craft their own personal essays. Topics include: Engaging your students in the reading of a nonfiction narrative with collaborative chapter notes, empathy check-ins, and a mini-research paper to deepen students’ understanding; Helping your students identify meaningful life events, recount their experiences creatively, and construct effective opening and closing lines for their personal essays; Encouraging your students to use dialogue, outside research, and a clear plot structure to make their narrative nonfiction more compelling and polished. The strategies in this book are supplemented by examples of student work and snapshots from the author’s own classroom. The book also includes interviews with narrative nonfiction writers MK Asante and Johanna Bear. The appendices offer additional tips for using narrative nonfiction in English class, text and online resources for teaching narrative nonfiction, and a correlation chart between the activities in this book and the Common Core Standards.

'This book demonstrates that long-term win-win collaboration approaches work. Principals and contractors don't have to end up in conflict or litigation. I would recommend these ideas be adopted by companies eager to improve productivity.' - John Mulcahy, Chairman, Mirvac 'In an industry dominated by conflict and unproductive activity, this book offers a refreshing and practical way for all parties in the building industry to achieve more from their capital and labour inputs. Stephen Hanman and Ian George have shown through application that by introducing trust, respect and meaningful communication into relationships, results improve for all stakeholders. Moreover, the investment required to do the first job carries over to future work, resulting in improved performance with each project. I applaud the efforts of the authors in both creating the environment for their clients to 'do better' in their construction businesses and for sharing their work with the wider business and labour communities. One wonders what benefits could flow to other industries should the broader principles so successfully adopted in this book be applied more widely.' - Terry Henderson, company director and businessman 'This book provides wonderful insights into the way in which economic and social relationships associated with building and construction can be transformed. The participants involved in CGA Bryson projects have experienced considerable benefits in their working and personal lives. There is also evidence of significant economic benefits for all within the project supply chains. In the context of the broader building and construction industry, this account contains lessons which offer solutions for some of the seemingly intractable problems of conflict, waste, poor quality work and alienation that bedevil this industry. We have a lot to learn from these two professionals who are writing about their direct experience in transforming a construction enterprise.' - Professor Tony Dalton, RMIT Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute Research Centre, School of Global, Urban and Social Studies, RMIT University 'In our own research, we have documented in financial terms the benefits of cross-functional, cross-firm collaboration. However, for many executives, building a culture that supports collaboration is not easy. Ian and Stephen not only report on the benefits of collaboration in an industry where such behaviour has not been the norm, but they provide guidelines for building organisations with a culture of collaboration.' - Dr Douglas M Lambert, Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University, founder of the Supply Chain Management Institute

The Journey from "I-TO-WE" teaches couples how to gain awareness, learn skills, and practice techniques to be "Best Friends during the Day, Lovers at Night, and Partners for Life." My structured coaching program-"Create an Emotionally Intelligent Relationship" -is a comprehensive guide. I developed the program to help individuals and couples achieve relationship success at home, at work and within themselves. The companion workbook provides interactive exercises, activities, and additional explanations to put this program into practice. My framework models "the best of the best" teachings. In covering each topic, I blended highly respected research with insights from my own life experiences and coaching practice. The "Create an Emotionally Intelligent Relationship" program, as a result, uniquely encompasses all of the crucial areas and aspects of a couple's relationship, and presents them in a personally powerful yet simple-to-follow, practical format. Married couples, committed life partners, separated couples looking for a way to reunite, and pre-committed couples considering final vows of marriage will all benefit from following this program. An individual who has endured relationship difficulties in the past can also gain insight from this book to facilitate success in his or her next relationship opportunity. Interwoven through each chapter is a case vignette based on a fictional couple, Steve and Amy. Their created roles reflect the stories, issues, challenges, and struggles of couples I have coached in my practice through the years. I added the case study to help couples understand how they can apply the awareness, skills and techniques contained in this book to their own situations. The Introduction serves as an overview of this couple's relationship and sets the stage for the vignettes that follow. My hope is that this book guides you on a wonderful journey together as you begin to cross the bridge into your field of sunflowers.

From Self Care To We Care written by Jordan Quaglia and has been published by Shambhala Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-06 with Psychology categories.

Learn to harmonize self-care with caring for others through we-care, a science-based approach designed to enhance personal and social well-being, promote healthy boundaries, and offer a path of healing and transformation. Too many of us are familiar with the burnout that can come from overextending ourselves for others. Self-care is often promoted as the solution to this imbalance, but there are growing concerns that an overemphasis on self-care is exacerbating interpersonal challenges, fraying the fabric of our communities, and diminishing our responsiveness to broader social issues. In a world where time can feel increasingly scarce, we find ourselves in a dilemma: should we prioritize ourselves or others? Yet as psychologist and compassion scientist Jordan Quaglia demonstrates, this choice is based on a false dichotomy. The emerging science and practice of we-care reframes the very concept of care as a social force that includes both self and other. Through personal stories, guided inquiries, practical social exercises, and insights from cutting-edge neuroscience, Quaglia offers a framework and toolset designed to help you find a more balanced way to express your innate sense of compassion. This holistic approach sparks transformative changes across your health, relationships, and work—uplifting yourself and others while supporting a stronger, more connected society for us all.

There is no term so heavily contested in social science literature/nomenclature than ‘Development’. This book brings Indigenous perspectives to African develop¬ment. It is argued that contrary to development as we know it not working, a greater part of the problem is that conventional development approaches that work have in fact not truly been followed to the letter and hence the quagmire. All this is ironic since everything we do about our world is development. So, how come there is “difficult knowledge” when it comes to learning from what we know, i.e., what local peoples do and have done for centuries as a starting point to recon¬structing and reframing ‘development’? In getting our heads around this paradox, we are tempted to ask more questions. How do we as African scholars and research¬ers begin to develop “home-grown solutions” to our problems? How do we pioneer new analytical systems for understanding our communities and offer a pathway to genuine African development, i.e., Indigenist African development? (see also Yankah, 2004). How do we speak of Indigenist development mindful of global developments and entanglements around us? Can we afford to pursue development still mired in a “catch up” scenario? Are we in a race with the development world and where do we see this race ending or where do we define as the ‘finishing line’?
