This volume contains cutting-edge research from leading experts in ergodic theory, dynamical systems and group actions. A large part of the volume addresses various aspects of ergodic theory of general group actions including local entropy theory, universal minimal spaces, minimal models and rank one transformations. Other papers deal with interval exchange transformations, hyperbolic dynamics, transfer operators, amenable actions and group actions on graphs.

Handbook Of Dynamics And Probability written by Peter Müller and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-20 with Science categories.

Our time is characterized by an explosive growth in the use of ever more complicated and sophisticated (computer) models. These models rely on dynamical systems theory for the interpretation of their results and on probability theory for the quantification of their uncertainties. A conscientious and intelligent use of these models requires that both these theories are properly understood. This book is to provide such understanding. It gives a unifying treatment of dynamical systems theory and probability theory. It covers the basic concepts and statements of these theories, their interrelations, and their applications to scientific reasoning and physics. The book stresses the underlying concepts and mathematical structures but is written in a simple and illuminating manner without sacrificing too much mathematical rigor. The book is aimed at students, post-docs, and researchers in the applied sciences who aspire to better understand the conceptual and mathematical underpinnings of the models that they use. Despite the peculiarities of any applied science, dynamics and probability are the common and indispensable tools in any modeling effort. The book is self-contained, with many technical aspects covered in appendices, but does require some basic knowledge in analysis, linear algebra, and physics. Peter Müller, now a professor emeritus at the University of Hawaii, has worked extensively on ocean and climate models and the foundations of complex system theories.

This volume contains a collection of survey and research articles from the special program and international conference on Dynamics and Numbers held at the Max-Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany in 2014. The papers reflect the great diversity and depth of the interaction between number theory and dynamical systems and geometry in particular. Topics covered in this volume include symbolic dynamics, Bratelli diagrams, geometry of laminations, entropy, Nielsen theory, recurrence, topology of the moduli space of interval maps, and specification properties.

This book giving an exposition of the foundations of modern measure theory offers three levels of presentation: a standard university graduate course, an advanced study containing some complements to the basic course, and, finally, more specialized topics partly covered by more than 850 exercises with detailed hints and references. Bibliographical comments and an extensive bibliography with 2000 works covering more than a century are provided.

This book is designed to provide graduate students and other researchers in dynamical systems theory with an introduction to the ergodic theory of Lebesgue spaces. The author's aim is to present a technically complete account which offers an in-depth understanding of the techniques of the field, both classical and modern. Thus, the basic structure theorems of Lebesgue spaces are given in detail as well as complete accounts of the ergodic theory of a single transformation, ergodic theorems, mixing properties and entropy. Subsequent chapters extend the earlier material to the areas of joinings and representation theorems, in particular the theorems of Ornstein and Krieger. Prerequisites are a working knowledge of Lebesgue measure and the topology of the real line as might be gained from the first year of a graduate course. Many exercises and examples are included to illustrate and to further cement the reader's understanding of the material. The result is a text which will furnish the reader with a sound technical background from the foundations of the subject to some of its most recent developments.

Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an authoritative reference to the basic tools and concepts of complexity, systems theory, and dynamical systems from the perspective of pure and applied mathematics. Complex systems are systems that comprise many interacting parts with the ability to generate a new quality of collective behavior through self-organization, e.g. the spontaneous formation of temporal, spatial or functional structures. These systems are often characterized by extreme sensitivity to initial conditions as well as emergent behavior that are not readily predictable or even completely deterministic. The more than 100 entries in this wide-ranging, single source work provide a comprehensive explication of the theory and applications of mathematical complexity, covering ergodic theory, fractals and multifractals, dynamical systems, perturbation theory, solitons, systems and control theory, and related topics. Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an essential reference for all those interested in mathematical complexity, from undergraduate and graduate students up through professional researchers.

This second half of Volume 1 of this Handbook follows Volume 1A, which was published in 2002. The contents of these two tightly integrated parts taken together come close to a realization of the program formulated in the introductory survey "Principal Structures of Volume 1A.The present volume contains surveys on subjects in four areas of dynamical systems: Hyperbolic dynamics, parabolic dynamics, ergodic theory and infinite-dimensional dynamical systems (partial differential equations).. Written by experts in the field.. The coverage of ergodic theory in these two parts of Volume 1 is considerably more broad and thorough than that provided in other existing sources. . The final cluster of chapters discusses partial differential equations from the point of view of dynamical systems.
