With the advent of lasers as weapons, it is necessary to understand how a laser propagates through a complex medium. For the U.S. Navy, the complexity of a maritime environment imposes particular challenges for laser propagation due to high concentrations of water high concentrations of water vapor and high probabilities of liquid water in the form of fog, rain, or sea spray along the beam path. Although considerable research has gone into characterizing the maritime environment and simulating laser propagation through water vapor and turbulence, the interactions between a high energy laser (HEL) and liquid water are poorly understood. A project is taking place in the U.S. Naval Academy’s Directed Energy Research Center to investigate the interaction of a high energy laser and single water droplets. An HEL is used to irradiate droplets of water, and the droplet shape and size, the infrared radiation from the droplet, and the transmitted beam profile are measured and recorded. To control the droplet shape, it will be levitated using a commercial ultrasonic levitator, where the drop is held in place at a node by the pressure from a standing sound wave. The results of this experiment will provide an understanding of the coupled interaction between an HEL and a water droplet.

Our research accomplishments have been in five main areas: (1) Third- order sum frequency generation in the volume of the droplet and the role of phase-matching condition with droplet-cavity modes which are standing waves; (2) Retention of acoustic phonons generated by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and the role of these long-lived acoustic waves and photons in 'seeding' the SBS during the subsequent input-laser pulse; (3) Stimulated low-frequency scattering from anisotropic molecules in droplets and the effect of the low-frequency scattering process in causing the elastic scattering spectrum and the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) spectrum to be asymmetrically broadened; (4) Resonance Raman enhancement of the SRS gain coefficient with the intent to increase the sensitivity of SRS to minor species in the droplet; and (5) The use of population inverted laser-dye molecules to provide extra gain for SRS from minor species in the droplet.

Nonlinear optical interactions in a droplet occur at remarkably low input intensity levels because the droplets acts as a lens to concentrate the input radiation at a location just within the shadow face and as an optical cavity to provide feedback for the internally generated radiation. LIB within the droplet occurs when the rising portion of the input laser pulse causes multiphoton ionization which is followed by cascade multiplication. The resultant plasma within the droplet transforms a nominally transparent droplet into an absorbing droplet, and the remaining portion of the input laser pulse heats the droplet. Multiple scattering calculations and measurements were made from two closely spaced fibers which served as a prototype of densely packed aerosols. The comparison between the exact calculation for two fibers and the experimental results from the fiber-mirror configuration was excellent and provided new insight into the multiple scattering from closely spaced aerosols.

We measured the hot electron production from short pulse laser plasma interactions using a fiber-array-based compact electron spectrometer that uses permanent magnets for electron energy dispersion and over 100 scintillating fibers coupled to a 1024 x 1024 pixel CCD as the detection system. This spectrometer has electron energy coverage from 10 keV to 60 MeV. The whole spectrometer is compact with dimensions of 8 inch x 7 inch x 4 inch. We performed systematic measurements of electron production on the ultra short pulse laser JanUSP (with pulse width less than 100 fs) at intensity range interest to Fast Ignition scheme from 10{sup 17} Wcm{sup -2} up to 10{sup 19} Wcm{sup -2} at Lawrence Livermore National laboratory. The electron distributions were obtained at various laser energies for different solid target materials and observation angles. We determined characteristic temperature of the escaped hot electrons at various incident laser intensity which is confirmed by theoretical simulations using the ZOHAL Particle-in-cell (PIC) code.

A model has been constructed in which a small droplet is exploded by the absorption of energy from a high energy laser beam. The beam flux is so high that it is assumed that a plasma is formed. A single-fluid model of a plasma droplet interacting with laser radiation is used. Selfsimilarity is invoked to reduce the spherically symmetric problem involving hydrodynamics and Maxwell's equations to quadrature. It is shown analytically that the model reproduces in qualitative manner certain features observed experimentally.

Modeling analyses of preliminary experimental data obtained from the High Energy Laser (HEL) beam propagation tests (HELSMK-I) through tactically significant smokes are presented for the case of Fog-oil (FO). Thermal imager data together with transmission measurements and other experimental evidence are used to reconstruct and model the interaction physics of the HEL beam with FO. An earlier theoretical model by Wallace (1983) predicted that the high energy beam would vaporize large (>10.mu.m) FO droplets, while the smaller droplets primarily conduct their energy to the ambient air, thereby enhancing thermal blooming in air. This behavior is categorized as an anomaly for the interaction of a HEL beam with aerosols because complete vaporization would normally have been expected. The HELSMK-I test together with computational results from our nonlinear beam propagation codes confirmed this prediction. Fog-oil can thus be classified as an effective smoke shield against a HEL threat in open air at infra-red wavelengths, at flux levels of a few tens of Kilowattscm2. These results also validated our computer models which show that a punch-through effect is prevented in FO due to its enhanced blooming characteristics. 5 refs., 7 figs.
