Excerpt from Measurement of Surface Tension Although the purity of the materials used is of importance, it should be borne in mind that it is the purity of the surface separat ing the juxtaposed fluids that must primarily be considered. This is quite a different thing from the chemical purity of the materials in bulk. Exceedingly small amounts of physical contamination may affect the surface most seriously. Whatever tends to lower the sur face tension will tend to accumulate in the surface. For this reason, other things being the same, the higher values of the surface tension are worthy of the greater confidence. Excerpt from Surface Tension and Vital Phenomena It must also be admitted that in some signal instances in which the physicist and chemist attempted to aid in the solution of biological problems the result has not been quite satisfactory. Especially has this been the result in the case of membranes. Arrhenius' theory of dissociation and van 't Hofi's gas theory of solutions were supported by such an array of facts from the side of physics and physical chemistry that there appeared to be no question whatever regarding their universal validity, and their application in the study of the phenomena of osmosis was urged with acclaim by physical chemists and eagerly welcomed by physiologists. The theories promised at first to explain all the processes involved in difiusion through membranes, but the final result was not in all cases what was expected. In illustration of this. One instance will suffice. The osmotic concentration of the blood in man as measured by the depression of the freezing point (a) ranges from -o.s6 to The concentration of the urine indicated in the same way is, except under rare conditions. Always greater than this, and its value usually ranges between - l.50° and -s.oo° C that is, from more than two to five times that of the blood plasma. This result is the very opposite of that which should be expected from the application of the theories of Arrhenius and van 't Hoff. Surface And Interfacial Tension written by Stanley Hartland and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-03-11 with Science categories.

This edited volume offers complete coverage of the latest theoretical, experimental, and computer-based data as summarized by leading international researchers. It promotes full understanding of the physical phenomena and mechanisms at work in surface and interfacial tensions and gradients, their direct impact on interface shape and movement, and their significance to numerous applications. Assessing methods for the accurate measurement of surface tension, interfacial tension, and contact angles, Surface and Interfacial Tension presents modern simulations of complex interfacial motions, such as bubble motion in liquids, and authoritatively illuminates bubble nucleation and detachment.

Interfacial Tensiometry written by A.I. Rusanov and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-06-07 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This is the first monograph devoted to interfacial tensiometry and is therefore the definitive source of information on measuring surface tension. More than 40 methods for measuring surface tension both at the liquid-fluid and solid-fluid boundaries are described including methods using computational techniques, tele- and video-apparatus, and laser techniques. A central place in the book has been given to methods based on the investigation of properties of liquid and gaseous menisci both in the presence or absence of a gravitational field and a rotational one. Their description is preceded by a chapter on the theory of menisci including the derivation of various forms of the Laplace formula. The application of the methods for studying the equilibrium and dynamic surface tension has been considered. Dynamic methods used for very small surface life-times are described and a separate chapter is devoted to the theory of surface tension which will ensure a better understanding of the material. A systematic analysis of the material embracing all kinds of interfaces including solid surfaces, the history of each method, its theoretical foundation, characterization of measuring procedures and setups, a large number of numeric tables and plots and representative illustrations make the book encyclopedic in character.

With substantial contributions from experienced industrial scientists and engineers, this work will have real application towards improving process efficiency and improvement in the trillion-dollar global petroleum industry. It presents an overview of the emerging field of petroleomics, which endeavors to understand the fundamental components of crude oil. Petroleomics promises to revolutionize petroleum science in much the same way that genomics transformed the study of medicine not long ago. Asphaltenes are a particular focus, with many chapters devoted to the analysis of their structure and properties.

Classical Nucleation Theory In Multicomponent Systems written by Hanna Vehkamäki and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-03-22 with Science categories.

Nucleation is the initial step of every first-order phase transition, and most phase transitions encountered both in everyday life and industrial processes are of the first-order. Using an elegant classical theory based on thermodynamics and kinetics, this book provides a fully detailed picture of multi-component nucleation. As many of the issues concerning multi-component nucleation theory have been solved during the last 10-15 years, it also thoroughly integrates both fundamental theory with recent advances presented in the literature. Classical Nucleation Theory in Multicomponent Systems serves as a textbook for advanced thermodynamics courses, as well as an important reference for researchers in the field. The main topics covered are: the basic relevant thermodynamics and statistical physics; modelling a molecular cluster as a spherical liquid droplet; predicting the size and composition of the nucleating critical clusters; kinetic models for cluster growth and decay; calculating nucleation rates; and a full derivation and application of nucleation theorems that can be used to extract microscopic cluster properties from nucleation rate measurements. The assumptions and approximations needed to build the classical theory are described in detail, and the reasons why the theory fails in certain cases are explained. Relevant problems are presented at the end of each chapter.

Surface Science written by John B. Hudson and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-03-09 with Science categories.

A comprehensive, authoritative introduction to the central issues in surface science. This volume takes a practical, experimental approach to modern surface science. Professor John B. Hudson promotes an intuitive understanding of the concepts of surface science by using physical examples to illustrate basic surface structures and phenomena. Accessible and easy to read throughout, Surface Science provides a solid foundation from which to develop a conceptual understanding of the field. Divided into four sections, Surface Science begins with descriptions of the structure, thermodynamics, and mobility of clean surfaces, then moves on to explore the interaction of gas molecules with solid surfaces. Next, Professor Hudson discusses the energetic particle interactions that are the basis for the majority of techniques developed to reveal the structure and chemistry of surfaces. The book concludes with a presentation of the background material involved in crystal nucleation and growth. The product of more than three decades of experience in introducing students to surface science, this book includes: * State-of-the-art surface analysis techniques * Examples of phenomena and structures from current and classical works * A comprehensive presentation that can be easily tailored to senior undergraduate and graduate courses in a variety of disciplines * Extensive references and course-proven end-of-chapter problems. Surface Science is an excellent textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in engineering and the physical sciences who want a general overview of surface science. It also provides important background information for researchers just starting out in the field. JOHN B. HUDSON, PhD, is Professor of Materials Science in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York.

Excerpt from The Drop Weights of Twenty Non-Associated Liquids and the Molecular Weights Calculated for Them: Dissertation The object of this work has been to apply the principles arrived at by former workers in drop weights to further non-associated liquids. They proved, first, that the drop weight of a liquid, measured under proper conditions, is proportional to its surface tension; and consequently can be substituted in place of surface tension in Eotvos' formula as modified by Ramsay and Shields.
