The ratio of the cross section for p{bar p} interactions producing a Z boson and at least one b quark jet to the inclusive Z+jet cross section is measured using 4.2 fb−1 of p{bar p} collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at √s = 1.96 TeV. The Z → l+l− candidate events with at least one b jet are discriminated from Z+ charm and light jet(s) events by a novel technique that exploits the properties of the tracks associated to the jet. The measured ratio is 0.0193 ± 0.0027 for events having a jet with transverse momentum p{sub T} > 20 GeV and pseudorapidity.

The inclusive production of $b$-jets with a $Z$ boson is an important background to searches for the Higgs boson in associated $ZH \rightarrow llb\bar{b}$ production at the Fermilab Tevatroncollider. This thesis describes the most precise measurement to date of the ratio of inclusive cross sections $\sigma(p\bar{p} \rightarrow Z+b$-jet$)/\sigma(p\bar{p} \rightarrow Z+$jet$)$ when a $Z$ boson decays into two electrons or muons. The measurement uses a data sample from $p\bar{p}$ collisions at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the D0 detector. The measured ratio $\sigma(Z+b$-jet$)/\sigma(Z+$jet$)$ is $0.0187\pm0.0021(stat.) \pm0.0015(syst)$ for jets with transverse momentum $p_T$~$>$~20 GeV and pseudorapidity $\eta\leq$2.5. The measurement is compared with the next-to-leading order theoretical predictions from MCFM and is found to be consistent within uncertainties.

We report a measurement of the ratio of the t{bar t} to Z/[gamma]* production cross sections in √s = 1.96 TeV p{bar p} collisions using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 4.6 fb−1, collected by the CDF II detector. The t{bar t} cross section ratio is measured using two complementary methods, a b-jet tagging measurement and a topological approach. By multiplying the ratios by the well-known theoretical Z/[gamma]* → ll cross section predicted by the standard model, the extracted t{bar t} cross sections are effectively insensitive to the uncertainty on luminosity. A best linear unbiased estimate is used to combine both measurements with the result [sigma]{sub t{bar t}} = 7.70 ± 0.52 pb, for a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV/c2.

The cross sections for W and Z production in p[bar p] collisions at [radical]s = 1.8 TeV are measured using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The detected final states are W [yields] ev[sub e], Z [yields] e[sup +]e[sup [minus]], W [yields] [mu]v[sub [mu]], and Z [yields] [mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]. In the ratio of these measurements, many common sources of systematic error cancel and we measure R = [sigma], (p[bar p] [yields] W) [center-dot] Br(W [yields] lv)/ [sigma], (p[bar p] [yields] Z) [center-dot] Br(Z [yields] l[sup +]l[sup [minus]]). Assuming standard model couplings, this result is used to determine the width of the W bosom and to set a limit on the decay W[sup +] [yields] t[bar b].
