The subject of this thesis is the measurement of the rate at which a top-antitop quark pair is produced in pp collisions at a center of mass energy of ps = 1:96 TeV. The data are collected with the D detector, a multi-purpose detector operating at the Fermilab Tevatron collider during Run II. A measurement of the top quark pair (t$\bar{t}$) production cross section ( ?t$\bar{t}$) in p$\bar{p}$ collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV is presented. The measurement is based on data recorded by the D0 Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and preselected in the e+jets (366 pb-1) and ?+jets (363 pb-1) channels. The cross section is extracted by applying a lifetime-tagging technique to the data, and yields ?t$\bar{t}$ = 6.96$+1.07\atop{-0.98}$(stat + syst) ± 0.45(lumi) pb; for a top quark mass mt =175 GeV, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction.

This dissertation presents a new measurement of p$ar{p}$ → t$ar{t}$X production at √s = 1.96 TeV using 974.2 pb-1of data collected with the D0 detector between 2002 and 2006. We focus on the final state where the W boson from one of the top quarks decays into a ? lepton and its associated neutrino, while the other W boson decays into a quark-antiquark pair. We aim to select those events in which the ? lepton subsequently decays hadronically, meaning to one or three charged hadrons, zero or more neutral hadrons and a tau neutrino (the charge conjugate processes are implied in all of the above). The observable signature thus consists of a narrow calorimeter shower with associated track(s) characteristic of a hadronic tau decay, four or more jets, of which two are initiated by b quarks accompanying the W's in the top quark decays, and a large net missing momentum in the transverse plane due to the energetic neutrino-antineutrino pair that leave no trace in the detector media. The preliminary result for the measured cross section is: ?(t$ar{t}$) = 6.9-1.2 +1.2(stat)-0.7+0.8(syst) ± 0.4 (lumi) pb. This indicates that our finding is consistent with the Standard Model prediction.

Two alternative measurements of the t¯t production cross section at √s = 1.96 TeV in proton-antiproton collisions in the lepton+jets channel are presented. The t¯t production cross section is extracted by combining the kinematic event information in a multivariate discriminant. The measurement yields ?p¯p → t¯t + x = 5.13-1.57+1.76(stat)-1.10+0.96(syst) ± 0.33 (lumi) pb in the muon+jets channel, using 229.1 pb-1, and in the combination with the electron+jets channel (226.3 pb-1) ?p¯p → t¯t + x = 6.60-1.28+1.37(stat)-1.11+1.25(syst) ± 0.43 (lumi) pb. The second measurement presented reconstructs explicitly secondary vertices to d lifetime b-tagging. The measurement combines the muon+jets and the electron+jets channel, using 158.4 pb-1 and 168.8 pb-1, respectively: ?p¯p → t¯t + x = 8.24-1.25+1.34(stat)-1.63+1.89(syst) ± 0.54 (lumi) pb.

We discuss the measurement of the cross section for t$ar{t}$ production in p$ar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV in e+jets final states observed at the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Our result is based on data collected from the June 2002 to September 2003 period of Run II of the p$ar{p}$ Collider. In the Standard Model, the top quark is expected to decay mainly into a W boson and a b quark. The W boson can decay subsequently into a lepton and its neutrino or a q$ar{q}$ quark-antiquark pair. In this thesis, we focus on the e+ ve or e- $ar{v}$e decays of one of the W bosons and the q$ar{q}$ decays of the other W boson in t$ar{t}$ final states. The b, q and q' quarks appear as jets of particles in the detector, thereby defining the e+jets final state. We present two methods used for performing this measurement. The first method is based on a Random Grid Search (RGS) that minimizes the uncertainty on the extracted cross section. The variables used in the search take advantage of differences between expected background and signal processes to obtain the yield of t$ar{t}$ events. The second method uses a Neural Network (NN) procedure that discriminates signal from background through the application of a NN trained on simulated t$ar{t}$ signal and W+jets background events. The preliminary results presented in this thesis for inclusive t$ar{t}$ production are ? p$ar{p}$ → t$ar{t}$ + x of 7.9$+2.6top{-2.4}$(stat) $+2.2top{-2.3}$(syst) ± 0.5 (L) pb for the NN analysis, where the uncertainties correspond to contributions from statistical and systematic sources and from the uncertainty on luminosity. Our measurements are consistent with each other, and are within error of the value of 6.77 ± 0.42 pb expected in the Standard Model.

We present a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV utilizing 425 pb−1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We consider the final state of the top quark pair containing one high-p{sub T} electron or muon and at least four jets. We exploit specific kinematic features of t{bar t} events to extract the cross section. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we measure [sigma]{sub t{bar t}} = 6.4{sub -1.2}{sup +1.3}(stat) ± 0.7(syst) ± 0.4(lum)pb, in good agreement with the standard model prediction.

The direct observation of the top quark was first achieved at the Tevatron proton anti-proton collider at Fermilab. This discovery completed the third generation quark sector where the top quark is expected to accompany the bottom quark in the weak isospin doublet. This dissertation discusses the experimental verification of the production cross section as predicted by the Standard Model. A measurement of the t$ar{t}$ production cross section using 107.9 pb-1 of p$ar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab between March of 2003 and June of 2003 is presented. The measurement focuses on the t$ar{t}$ production in the ''lepton plus jets'' final state in which one of the W bosons from the t$ar{t}$ decay subsequently decays leptonically to an electron or a muon, and the other decays hadronically. The B-tagging technique which utilizes the precision silicon detector tracking is used to enhance the signal for t$ar{t}$ events relative to the background through identification of the bottom quark from its measurable lifetime. The t$ar{t}$ production cross section is measured to be ?t$ar{t}$ = 4.5 ± 1.4(stat) ± 0.8(sys) pb.

The top quark is the most massive fundamental particle observed so far, and the study of its properties is interesting for several reasons ranging from its possible special role in electroweak symmetry breaking to its sensitivity to physics beyond the standard model (SM). In particular, the measurement of the top quark pair production cross section ?t$ar{t}$ is of interest as a test of QCD predictions. Recent QCD calculations done with perturbation theory to next-to-leading order predict ?t$ar{t}$ with an uncertainty of less than 15%, which motivate measurements of comparable precision. In this thesis, the author reports a measurement of the cross section for pair production of top quarks in the lepton+jets channel in 318 pb-1 of p$ar{p}$ collision data at √s = 1.96 TeV. The data were recorded between March 2002 and September 2004, during Run II of the Tevatron, by the CDF II detector, a general purpose detector which combines charged particle trackers, sampling calorimeters, and muon detectors. processes in which a W boson is produced in association with several jets with large transverse momentum can be misidentified at t$ar{t}$, since they have the same signature. In order to separate the t$ar{t}$ events from this background, they develop a method to tag b-jets based on tracking information from the silicon detector. The main event selection requires at least one tight (more restrictive) b tag in the event. As a cross check, they also measure the cross section using events with a loose (less restrictive) b tag and events which have at least two tight or at least two loose b tags. Background contributions from heavy flavor production processes, such as Wb$ar{b}$, Wc$ar{c}$ or Wc, misidentified W bosons, electroweak processes, single top production, and mistagged jets are estimated using a combination of Monte Carlo calculations and independent measurements in control data samples. An excess over background in the number of events that contain a lepton, missing energy and three or more jets with at least one b-tag is assumed to be a signal of t$ar{t}$ production and is used to measure the production cross section ?t$ar{t}$.

The CDF and D0 experiments have measured the t{bar t} production cross section in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV from different final states using a wide variety of techniques. CDF has combined 6 measurements using data samples with integrated luminosities up to 760 pb{sup -1}: {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} = 7.3 {+-} 0.5(stat) {+-} 0.6(syst) {+-} 0.4(lum) pb in good agreement with the theoretical calculations: 6.7 {+-} 0.8 pb for a top mass of 175 GeV/c{sup 2}. The experimental precision of the current CDF combined result is comparable for the first time to the accuracy of the QCD NLO theory: {approx} 12%.
