A measurement of the polarization of the W boson from top quark decay is an excellent test of the V-A form of the charged-current weak interaction in the standard model. Since the longitudinal W boson is intimately related to the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism, and the standard model gives a specific prediction for the fraction of longitudinal W bosons from top decays, it is of particular interest for study. This thesis presents a measurement of W boson polarization in top quark decay through an analysis of the cos [theta]* distribution in the lepton-plus-jets channel of t[bar t] candidate events from p[bar p] collisions at [radical]s = 1.96 TeV. This measurement uses an integrated luminosity of [approx]162 pb[sup -1] of data collected with the CDF Run II detector, resulting in 31 t[bar t] candidate events with at least one identified b jet. Using a binned likelihood fit to the cos [theta]* distribution from the t[bar t] candidate events found in this sample, the fraction of W bosons with longitudinal polarization is determined to be F[sub 0] = 0.99[sub -0.35][sup +0.29](stat.) [+-] 0.19(syst.), F[sub 0]> 0.33 [at] 95% CL. This result is consistent with the standard model prediction, given a top quark mass of 174.3 GeV/c[sup 2], of F[sub 0] = 0.701 [+-] 0.012.

We report measurements of the polarization of W bosons from top-quark decays using 2.7 fb−1 of p{bar p} collisions collected by the CDF II detector. Assuming a top-quark mass of 175 GeV/c2, three measurements are performed. A simultaneous measurement of the fraction of longitudinal (f0) and right-handed (f+) W bosons yields the model-independent results f0 = 0.88 ± 0.11(stat) ± 0.06(syst) and f+ = -0.15 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.06(syst) with a correlation coefficient of -0.59. A measurement of f0 (f+) constraining f+ (f0) to its standard model value of 0.0 (0.7) yields f0 = 0.70 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.04(syst) (f+ = 0.01 ± 0.02(stat) ± 0.05(syst)). All these results are consistent with standard model expectations.

Deep Inelastic Scattering Dis 2006 Proceedings Of The 14th International Workshop written by Masahiro Kuze and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-01-23 with Science categories.
These proceedings present the most up-to-date status of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) physics. Topics such as structure function measurements and phenomenology, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) studies in DIS and photoproduction, spin physics and diffractive interactions are reviewed in detail, with emphasis on those studies that push the test of QCD and the Standard Model to the limits of their present range of validity, towards both the very high and the very low four-momentum transfers in lepton-proton scattering.

This thesis introduces readers to the Standard Model, the top quark and its properties, before explaining the concept of spin correlation measurement. The first measurement of top quark spin correlations at the LHC in the lepton+jets decay channel is presented. As the heaviest elementary particle, the top quark plays an essential role in the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. In the case of top quarks being produced in pairs at hadron colliders, the Standard Model predicts their spins to be correlated. The degree of correlation depends on both the production mechanism and properties of the top quark. Any deviation from the Standard Model prediction can be an indicator for new physics phenomena. The thesis employs an advanced top quark reconstruction algorithm including dedicated identification of the up- and down-type quarks from the W boson decay.

Advances In Jet Substructure At The Lhc written by Roman Kogler and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-10 with Science categories.
This book introduces the reader to the field of jet substructure, starting from the basic considerations for capturing decays of boosted particles in individual jets, to explaining state-of-the-art techniques. Jet substructure methods have become ubiquitous in data analyses at the LHC, with diverse applications stemming from the abundance of jets in proton-proton collisions, the presence of pileup and multiple interactions, and the need to reconstruct and identify decays of highly-Lorentz boosted particles. The last decade has seen a vast increase in our knowledge of all aspects of the field, with a proliferation of new jet substructure algorithms, calculations and measurements which are presented in this book. Recent developments and algorithms are described and put into the larger experimental context. Their usefulness and application are shown in many demonstrative examples and the phenomenological and experimental effects influencing their performance are discussed. A comprehensive overview is given of measurements and searches for new phenomena performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. This book shows the impressive versatility of jet substructure methods at the LHC.

Discovery Of Single Top Quark Production written by Dag Gillberg and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-22 with Science categories.
The top quark is by far the heaviest known fundamental particle with a mass nearing that of a gold atom. Because of this strikingly high mass, the top quark has several unique properties and might play an important role in electroweak symmetry breaking—the mechanism that gives all elementary particles mass. Creating top quarks requires access to very high energy collisions, and at present only the Tevatron collider at Fermilab is capable of reaching these energies. Until now, top quarks have only been observed produced in pairs via the strong interaction. At hadron colliders, it should also be possible to produce single top quarks via the electroweak interaction. Studies of single top quark production provide opportunities to measure the top quark spin, how top quarks mix with other quarks, and to look for new physics beyond the standard model. Because of these interesting properties, scientists have been looking for single top quarks for more than 15 years. This thesis presents the first discovery of single top quark production. It documents one of the flagship measurements of the D0 experiment, a collaboration of more than 600 physicists from around the world. It describes first observation of a physical process known as “single top quark production”, which had been sought for more than 10 years before its eventual discovery in 2009. Further, his thesis describes, in detail, the innovative approach Dr. Gillberg took to this analysis. Through the use of Boosted Decision Trees, a machine-learning technique, he observed the tiny single top signal within an otherwise overwhelming background. This Doctoral Thesis has been accepted by Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC, Canada.
