Using the entire sample of 467 million [Upsilon](4S) 2!B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC, we perform a 'GLW' analysis of B{sup ±} 2!D{sup ±} decays, using decay modes in which the neutral D meson decays to either CP-eigenstates or non-CP-eigenstates. We measure the partial decay rate charge asymmetries for CP-even and CP-odd D final states to be A{sub CP+} = 0.25 ± 0.06 ± 0.02 and A{sub CP-} = -0.09 ± 0.07 ± 0.02, respectively, where the first error is the statistical and the second is the systematic uncertainty. The parameter A{sub CP+} is different from zero with a significance of 3.6 standard deviations, constituting evidence for direct CP violation. We also measure the ratios of the charged-averaged B partial decay rates in CP and non-CP decays, R{sub CP+} = 1.18 ± 0.09 ± 0.05 and R{sub CP-} = 1.07 {+-} 0.08 {+-} 0.04. We infer frequentist confidence intervals for the angle [gamma] of the (db) unitarity triangle, for the strong phase difference [delta]{sub B}, and for the amplitude ratio r{sub B}, which are related to the B− 2!D− decay amplitude by r{sub B}e{sup i({delta}{sub b-[gamma]})} = A(B− 2!{bar D}°K−)/A(B− 2!D°K°−). Including statistical and systematic uncertainties, they obtain 0.24

This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

The status of CP violation and the CKM matrix is reviewed. Direct CP violation in B decay has been established and the measurement of sin 2[beta] in [psi]K modes reached 5% accuracy. I discuss the implications of these, and of the possible deviations of the CP asymmetries in b → s modes from that in [psi]K. The first meaningful measurements of [alpha] and [gamma] are explained, together with their significance for constraining both the SM and new physics in B-{bar B} mixing. The authors measure the time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters in B0 → K+K-K0 based on a data sample of approximately 277 million B-meson pairs recorded at the Y(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-meson Factory at SLAC. They reconstruct two-body B0 decays to ?(1020)K$0top{S}$ and ?(1020)K$0top{L}$. Using a time-dependent maximum-likelihood fit, they measure sin2?eff(?K0) = 0.48 ± 0.28 ± 0.10, and C(?K0) = 0.16 ± 0.25 ± 0.09, where the first error is statistical, and the second is systematic. They also present measurements of the CP-violating asymmetries in the decay B0 → f0(→ ?+?-)K$0top{S}$. The results are obtained from a data sample of 209 x 106 Y(4S) → B$ar{B}$ decays, also collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. From a time-dependent maximum-likelihood fit they measure the mixing-induced CP violation parameter S(f0(980)K$0top{S}$) = - sin 2?efff0(980)K$0top{S}$ = -0.95$+0.32top{-0.23}$ ± 0.10 and the direct CP violation parameter C(f0(980)K$0top{S}$) = - 0.24 ± 0.31 ± 0.15, where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. Finally, they present a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B0 → f0(→ ?+?-)K$0top{S}$. From a time-dependent maximum likelihood fit to a data sample of 123 x 106 Y(4S) → B$ar{B}$ decays they find 93.6 ± 13.6 ± 6.4 signal events corresponding to a branching fraction of ?(B0 → f0(980)(→ ?+?-)K0) = (6.0 ± 0.9 ± 0.6 ± 1.2) x 10-6, where the first error is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to model uncertainties.

In the 110 pb[sup -1] Run I data sample, using three complementary flavor-tagging algorithms CDF has made a new measurement of the CP-violating asymmetry sin(2[beta])=0.79[sup +0.41][sub -0.44], This corresponds to the limit sin(2[beta])>-0.08 at 95% confidence level. This result agrees well with predictions from indirect constraints based on fits of elements of the CKM matrix.
