Questo testo raccoglie parte del materiale didattico utilizzato nei corsi di Meccanica Applicata e Meccatronica svolti presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria di Firenze. Esigenza comune di questi corsi era la necessità di fornire allo studente nozioni minime relative al funzionamento ed alla modellazione di alcuni dei più comuni sistemi di azionamento utilizzati in robotica, automazione e trazione di veicoli. Gli argomenti trattati sono un sotto-insieme di quella disciplina che dagli anni ’70 in poi viene definita meccatronica. In particolare sono inserite nozioni utili alla comprensione del funzionamento ed alla modellazione di alcune tipologie di attuatori elettrici, oleodinamici e pneumatici comunemente utilizzati in automazione. Alcune nozioni introduttive relative a meccanica delle trasmissioni, sensoristica, ed elettronica industriale sono inserite a complemento. In questa seconda edizione del 2015 alcune parti sono state emendate ed ampliate con particolare riferimento alla necessità di aggiornare il testo rispetto ai contenuti del corso. Trattandosi delle prime edizioni di un testo prodotto a partire da materiale didattico eterogeneo gli autori desiderano ringraziare tutti coloro che vorranno segnalare sviste ed inesattezze sicuramente presenti anche in questa seconda edizione che risulta ampliata rispetto alla precedente di oltre 100 pagine.

Lo scopo del libro è quello di fornire una base di conoscenze interdisciplinari relative a meccatronica, sistemi di azionamento, meccanica della locomozione. Tali conoscenze sono contestualizzate rispetto a diversi ambiti applicativi (ferroviario, stradale ed in misura minore, marino). Il testo segue un ordine di esposizione che favorisce una graduale introduzione alla materia: dopo aver introdotto alcune nozioni di meccanica della locomozione con riferimento alla applicazione ferroviaria, vengono spiegate le principali tecnologie utilizzate per la trazione elettrica. L’esposizione segue un ordine storico anticipando la descrizione dei sistemi di trazione di più semplice concezione rispetto a soluzioni più moderne e tecnologicamente complesse. Per quanto riguarda la trazione stradale, vengono descritte le principali tecnologie utilizzate per lo sviluppo di soluzioni elettriche ed ibride. In una terza sezione vengono introdotti anche alcuni concetti relativi al dimensionamento di sistemi di propulsione elettrica per applicazioni marine con particolare riferimento all’applicazione a veicoli autonomi. In tutte le sezioni si cerca di evidenziare aspetti comuni ed interdisciplinari (relativi, ad esempio, al controllo di macchine elettriche) rispetto a vincoli e caratteristiche speci che dell’applicazione.

This study offers the first comprehensive account of Emerson's philosophy since his philosophical rehabilitation began in the late 1970s. It builds on the historical reconstruction proposed in the author's previous book, Emerson's Metaphysics, and like that study draws on the entire Emerson corpus—the poetry and sermons included. The aim here is expository. The overall though not exclusive emphasis is on identity, as the first term of Emerson's metaphysics of identity and flowing or metamorphosis. This metaphysics, or general conception of the nature of reality, is what grounds his epistemology and ethics, as well as his esthetic, religious, and political thought. Acknowledging its primacy enables a general account like this to avoid the anti-realist overemphasis on epistemology and language that has often characterized rehabilitation readings of his philosophy. After an initial chapter on Emerson's metaphysics, the subsequent chapters devoted to the other branches of his thought also begin with their "necessary foundation" in identity, which is the law of things and the law of mind alike. Perception of identity in metamorphosis is what characterizes the philosopher, the poet, the scientist, the reformer, and the man of faith and virtue. Identity of mind and world is felt in what Emerson calls the moral sentiment. Identity is Emerson's answer to the Sphinx-riddle of life experienced as a puzzling succession of facts and events.

This textbook describes the basic physics of semiconductors, including the hierarchy of transport models, and connects the theory with the functioning of actual semiconductor devices. Details are worked out carefully and derived from the basic physical concepts, while keeping the internal coherence of the analysis and explaining the different levels of approximation. Coverage includes the main steps used in the fabrication process of integrated circuits: diffusion, thermal oxidation, epitaxy, and ion implantation. Examples are based on silicon due to its industrial importance. Several chapters are included that provide the reader with the quantum-mechanical concepts necessary for understanding the transport properties of crystals. The behavior of crystals incorporating a position-dependent impurity distribution is described, and the different hierarchical transport models for semiconductor devices are derived (from the Boltzmann transport equation to the hydrodynamic and drift-diffusion models). The transport models are then applied to a detailed description of the main semiconductor-device architectures (bipolar, MOS, CMOS), including a number of solid-state sensors. The final chapters are devoted to the measuring methods for semiconductor-device parameters, and to a brief illustration of the scaling rules and numerical methods applied to the design of semiconductor devices.
