Mechanical spectroscopy is a non-destructive technique that is very well suited for studying the dynamics of singularities such as structural defects in solids. It has been successfully applied in solid state physics and materials science for more than fifty years, and the present textbook aims at summarising the state-of-the-art in this field by presenting recent results obtained in Western European laboratories. The contents are divided into nine chapters. Introduction to mechanical spectroscopy (Ch.1) is based on a complete description of the elastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic behaviours of solids. The anelastic response is analysed from three different viewpoints: phenomenology, rheology and thermodynamics.

Mechanical losses associated with phase transitions are presented in chapter 5, and relaxation in non-crystalline materials in chapter 7. as thin-layers, localized surface properties, stress relazation in composites, fatigue and the development of high-damping materials, are described, with examples, in chapter 8. Chapter 9 covers classical, and new, techniques for measuring internal friction or ultrasonic attenuation in solids, from macro- down to nanoscale.

Mechanical Spectroscopy Ii written by Leszek B. Magalas and has been published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-02-13 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). This book comprises the proceedings of the Second International School on Mechanical Spectroscopy; presented here as invited lectures (Part I) and contributed papers (Part II). After having originated merely as a technique for the study of internal friction, mechanical spectroscopy has developed strongly, during the past decade, into a tool which is now indispensable for making advances in the creation of new materials. This book will therefore provide an excellent reference source for every researcher working in the field.

This work bridges the gaps between mechanical spectroscopy, internal friction, relaxation phenomena in solids and the spectroscopic approach to the dissipation of mechanical energy in solids. Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). A limited number of papers are selected from different fields in order to compare the analysis of similar relaxation phenomena occurring in various materials.

A concise textbook bridging quantum theory and spectroscopy! Designed as a practical text, Quantum Mechanical Foundations of Molecular Spectroscopy covers the quantum mechanical fundamentals of molecular spectroscopy from the view of a professional spectroscopist, rather than a theoretician. Written by a noted expert on the topic, the book puts the emphasis on the relationship between spectroscopy and quantum mechanics, and provides the background information and derivations of the subjects needed to understand spectroscopy including: stationary energy states, transitions between these states, selection rules, and symmetry. The phenomenal growth of all forms of spectroscopy over the past eight decades has contributed enormously to our understanding of molecular structure and properties. Today spectroscopy covers a broad field including the modern magnetic resonance techniques, non-linear, laser and fiber-based spectroscopy, surface and surface-enhanced spectroscopy, pico- and femtosecond time resolved spectroscopy, and many more. This up-to-date resource discusses several forms of spectroscopy that are used in many fields of science, such as fluorescence, surface spectroscopies, linear and non-linear Raman spectroscopy and spin spectroscopy. This important text: Contains the physics and mathematics needed to understand spectroscopy Explores spectroscopic methods the are widely used in chemistry, biophysics, biology, and materials science Offers a text written by an experienced lecturer and practitioner of spectroscopic methods Includes detailed explanations and worked examples Written for chemistry, biochemistry, material sciences, and physics students, Quantum Mechanical Foundations of Molecular Spectroscopy provides an accessible text for understanding molecular spectroscopy.
