Excerpt from Mechanics of Materials Since 188 5, when the first edition of this work was published, many advances have been made in the subject of Mechanics of Materials. Some of these have been noted in the additions to subsequent editions, but to record and correlate them properly it has now become necessary to rewrite and reset the book. In doing so the author has endeavored to keep the facts of experi ment and practice constantly in View, for the theory Of the subject is merely the formal expression and generalization of observed phenomena. The subject, indeed, no longer consists of a series, of academic exercises in algebra and rational mechanics, but it is indispensably necessary that the phenomena of stress should be clearly understood by the student. While laboratory work is a valuable aid to this end, it is important, in the Opinion of the author, that no recitation or lecture should be held without having test specimens at hand with which to illustrate the phys ical phenomena. The same general plan of treatment has been followed as before, but the subdivisions are somewhat different, and the fifteen chapters of the last edition have been increased to nineteen. The statement of average values of the principal materials. Of engineering has proved so advantageous to students that it is here also followed. Numerous numerical examples are given in the text to exemplify the formulas and methods, these generally relating to cases that arise in practice. To encourage students to think for themselves, one or more problems are given at the end of each article; 1 for the experience of the author has indicated that the solution of many numerical exercises is required in order that students may become well grounded in theory. Excerpt from Text-Book of Mechanics, Vol. 3: Mechanics of Materials This book is a text-book, and not a treatise, on mechanics of materials. Although calculus is freely used it is written for beginners who have had some previous training in theoretical mechanics. Most, if not all, of the exercises should be solved when they appear in the text, for much matter of importance is contained therein. An attempt has been made to produce a book which will encourage the student to think and not to memorize, to do and not simply to accept something already done for him, but which still furnishes sufficient material in the way of explanation and example so that he will not become discouraged. In its preparation numerous works in English, French, and German have been consulted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Strength of Materials It may be said, in a general way, that when designing machinery the designer must take into consideration two main factors. One is to so design the mechanism mechanically that the various motions required can be obtained by means of the machine. The other is to so proportion the parts that they will be strong enough to do the work for which they are intended Without breakage and, in most cases, without distortion. A third factor also enters prominently into the design, that Iof_so designing a machine that the various parts can be easily manufactured, but this last factor, while commercially fully as important as the other two, has not a direct bearing upon the actual working of the completed mechanism. The subject that will be dealt with in this Reference Book relates to the second of the two main questions affecting the design, that of proportioning the parts so that they will be strong enough to properly do the work for which they are intended. This problem, in turn, may be divided into two sections, one of which deals with the determining of the forces which act upon a machine part, tending to. Break or distort it, and the determination of the actual proportions necessary to resist these forces. The science of determining the forces acting upon a machine part or, in general, upon an engineering structure, is termed mechanics, this word being used in its more limited sense, often referred to as theoretical mechanics. The problem of actually determining the dimensions of details of machines or structures with regard to their strength is covered by that part of mechanical knowl edge which is known as the strength of materials. It should be under stood, however, that the question of determining the forces acting upon an engineering structure or machine and the determination of the actual dimensions and materials required to resist these forces, are so closely connected that in dealing with the strength of materials we must also deal, to a very large extent, with the mechanical theory of forces. Excerpt from A Text-Book on the Mechanics of Materials: And of Beams, Columns, and Shafts The following pages contain an elementary course of study in the resistance of materials and the mechanics of beams, columns and shafts, designed for the use of classes in technical schools and colleges. It should be preceded by a good train. Ing in mathematics and theoretical mechanics, and be followed by a special study of the properties of different qualities of materials, and by detailed exercises in construction and design. As the plan of the book is to deal mainly with the mechanics of the subject, extended tables of the results of tests on different kinds and qualities of materials are not given. The attempt, however, has been made to state average values of the quanti ties which express the strength and elasticity of what may be called the six principal materials. On account of the great variation of these values in different grades of the same material the wisdom of this attempt may perhaps be questioned, but the experience of the author in teaching the subject during the past eleven years has indicated that the best results are attained by forming at first a definite nucleus in the mind of the student, around which may be later grouped the multitude of facts necessary in his own particular department of study and work. Excerpt from Applied Mechanics, Vol. 2: Strength of Materials While the text is intended to include the material required for a fairly comprehensive knowledge of the subject, the chapters have been arranged in such a manner that the more dificult parts appear at the end; and hence, for a briefer course the latter parts of certain chapters and in some cm the entire chapter may be omitted without destroying the continuity in the presen tation of the subject. For example, in a brief course parts of Chapters 11, III, IV, V, VII, IX and X, and the whole of Chapters VI and X1 to XIV, inclusive, may be omitted. Excerpt from Mechanics: A d104-Book for Engineers This book is intended to give a working knowledge of the principles of Mechanics and to supply a foundation upon which intelligent study of Strength of Materials, Stresses in Structures, Machine Design, and other courses of more technical nature may rest. In the development of this subject, emphasis is put upon the physical character of the ideas involved, while mathematics is. employed as a convenient tool for the determination and expression of quantitative relations. Analytical and graphical methods are given together and each is interpreted in terms of the other. While the principal stress is placed upon Mechanics as a science, considerable attention is given to Mechanics as an art. In the text, in some of the problems, and in many of the illustrative examples, methods of calculation are suggested by means of which accurate results may be most readily obtained. The definitions of work and potential energy, together with the solution of problems of statics by the method of virtual work are given early. In the treatment of dynamics, the definitions of kinetic energy and its application to the conditions of variable motion are introduced as soon as possible. In equations involving acceleration or energy, the common commercial units are employed - the pound mass as the unit of mass and the weight of the pound mass as the unit of force. In order to clear up the confusion which results from the fact that physicists use one set of units while some engineering writers use another. Chapter XVIII is devoted to a discussion of the various systems. The author acknowledges his obligations to many of his colleagues who have assisted in the preparation of this book. P. W. Ott of the Department of Mechanics checked the problems of several chapters. S. A. Harbarger of the Department of English read all the manuscript and assisted in the final revision. Excerpt from Text-Book of Mechanics, Vol. 5 Mechanics may conveniently be divided into three parts: mechanics of solids, Of liquids, and of gases. Mechan ics of solids, when ideal, rigid solids only are considered, forms the simplest part of the subject, and this is the part first studied under the title of theoretical mechanics. When rigidity is no longer assumed the study of the mechanics of solids involves the elastic properties of materials. The rational, rigorously developed theory of elasticity is so complicated and leads to results SO unsatisfactory from the practical standpoint that engineering students are (and all students should be) first taught a simplified theory of elasticity known as mechanics of materials where, whenever the rigorous theory leads too far afield, recourse is had to approximations and reasonable assumptions based upon observation and experiment. The study of the mechanics of liquids is divided into hydrostatics and hydrokinetics. In the first division are studied the effects of liquids at rest; in the second liquids in motion. Excerpt from The Elementary Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1: Kinematics Thus we recognize matter in certain states which we call solid, liquid or gaseous. We distinguish also different kinds of matter, such as iron, wood, glass, water, air, etc., which we call substances. We also recognize limited portions of matter of definite shape and volume, such as a pebble, a rain-drop, a planet, etc., which we call material bodies. But what matter is in itself we do not know. Excerpt from The Mechanics of Machinery I should like to add that although, partly through pressure of work and partly through ill-health, this book appears only now, yet a great part of it has been in type, and a still greater part written and given in lectures, for a number of years. This has rendered it almost impossible for me to make any use of the excellent work of Prof. Cotterill, or of the recently published graphic methods of Prof. R. H. Smith, or the still more recently published (in any complete form) kinematic work of Professor Burmester, as I should otherwise have liked to do.
