Excerpt from The Elements of the Mechanics of Materials and of Power Transmission This book is the result of an experience of some years in classroom work with engineering students, and is intended for use in technical schools and colleges. It has frequently occurred to me that there is needless obscurity of statement in the average engineering text, with the consequent discouragement and retardation of young students. It has been my aim, therefore, to characterize the demonstrations in this text by completeness and simplicity of statement, in the belief that such treatment will greatly facilitate the study of more advanced works. The Calculus has been introduced necessarily, but only in its elementary form, and chiefly in demonstrations and solutions. Such use of it will be, I believe, beneficial to the young student in showing him possibilities in the application of the subject to practical problems. The book is in two parts. Part I is devoted to the elements of the Mechanics of Materials, and Part II to the elements of Power Transmission. It has been the aim to present both subjects only to the extent that will impart such a working knowledge of the fundamentals as will enable the student to grasp more extended works without aid. Much of the matter on iron and steel in Chapter IX, Part I, has been taken by permission from Durand's "Practical Marine Engineering," and the chief sources of reference have been the works of Goodman and Unwin. I am under obligation to my assistants in engineering, William L. De Baufre, Charles E. Conway, and Samuel P. Platt, - to the first two for valuable aid and suggestion and to the third for the care with which he made the tracings for the cuts. Excerpt from The Elements of Mechanics of Materials: A Text for Students in Engineering Courses This is not a treatise on the Mechanics of Materials. The efforts of Merriman, Burr, Lanza, and others cover the field so thoroughly that there is no present need of such a work. It is' designed to be an elementary text-book for students in the engineering courses in colleges and universities, where the time allotted to the subject does not exceed three or four recitations per week, for one half year, and where the course is preceded by college courses in mathe maties, through integral calculus, mechanics, and physics. The extreme mathematical treatment of the subject has been avoided, but where the use of higher mathematics leads to clearness they have been freely used. As it is intended as a text-book, the general cases are discussed fully, leaving the student to derive the formulas for special cases as part of the regular problem work. At the end of each chapter there are review questions covering the more important parts of the subjects dis cussed and problems illustrating the same. The solution of one problem of each type has been given to show the application of the general formulas. The appendix contains tables giving the values of the engineering constants of materials and the formulas com mouly used in design, in addition to the tables usually found in books of this character. Excerpt from Mechanics of Materials Since 188 5, when the first edition of this work was published, many advances have been made in the subject of Mechanics of Materials. Some of these have been noted in the additions to subsequent editions, but to record and correlate them properly it has now become necessary to rewrite and reset the book. In doing so the author has endeavored to keep the facts of experi ment and practice constantly in View, for the theory Of the subject is merely the formal expression and generalization of observed phenomena. The subject, indeed, no longer consists of a series, of academic exercises in algebra and rational mechanics, but it is indispensably necessary that the phenomena of stress should be clearly understood by the student. While laboratory work is a valuable aid to this end, it is important, in the Opinion of the author, that no recitation or lecture should be held without having test specimens at hand with which to illustrate the phys ical phenomena. The same general plan of treatment has been followed as before, but the subdivisions are somewhat different, and the fifteen chapters of the last edition have been increased to nineteen. The statement of average values of the principal materials. Of engineering has proved so advantageous to students that it is here also followed. Numerous numerical examples are given in the text to exemplify the formulas and methods, these generally relating to cases that arise in practice. To encourage students to think for themselves, one or more problems are given at the end of each article; 1 for the experience of the author has indicated that the solution of many numerical exercises is required in order that students may become well grounded in theory. Excerpt from The Elements of Electrical Transmission: A Text-Book for Colleges and Technical Schools In preparing the material for this book, it has been the author's aim to present those things which should be grouped and articulated in order to afford an elemental study of the very broad subject of the generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of power by electrical processes. The title of the work only partially covers this field, but was chosen with a view to brevity and convenience. In fact, our language needs some modest word for so large a subject. Necessarily, the material available far exceeds the capacity of any single volume, but the attempt is made to provide a working text-book which may serve as a more or less complete course, depending upon the amount of time available for the subject. It is hoped that it may serve as an outline for even an extended course, supplemented always by that most important source, the teacher. Nevertheless, the book will probably stand or fall as an elementary text-book, which is all that it desires to be. It is proper to discuss subjects which have been presented in other books, because they are important features. It has also seemed wise to provide certain discussions not elsewhere available because, sooner or later, the student feels the need of them. Under this head would come the matters of self-induction and capacity of polyphase circuits as derived from single-phase circuits, line calculations, standing waves, traveling waves, curve calculations, etc. Further comment might be made upon each of these topics and it seems necessary to speak particularly of the methods presented in making line calculations. Here, there are given several processes, each used more or less commonly. They are all presented in detail in order that contrasts may be made and the simplicity of the series approximation emphasized. Excerpt from The Elements of Mechanics The work presents the mixture of strict mechanical principles, with the physical inferences from experiment and Observation, that is de manded by the plan Of teaching Natural Philosophy, which is generally adopted in this country, and which is habitual in most Of the English Treatises on that general subject. 'it is therefore a combination Of the subject, styled by the French Mecanique, with so much of the department called by them Physique, as is necessary for its illustration, and for pre paring the way forlpractical applications. Nor have the latter been wholly omitted. _they have, in the scope of the treatise, frequently come into View, and have in all such cases been treated m We manner.
