This revised Second Edition features updated information on sediment transport through pipes and the principles of sediment transportation which form the basis for solving alluvial stream problems. Discusses such theoretical aspects as properties of sediments, incipient motion condition, flow regimes, resistance to flow, bed load transport, suspended load and total load transport. Also covers applied problems including sediment samplers and sampling, stable channels, alluvial streams and sediment control.

Climate and anthropogenic changes impact the conditions of erosion and sediment transport in rivers. Rainfall variability and, in many places, the increase of rainfall intensity have a direct impact on rainfall erosivity. Increasing changes in demography have led to the acceleration of land cover changes in natural areas, as well as in cultivated areas, and, sometimes, in degraded areas and desertified landscapes. These anthropogenized landscapes are more sensitive to erosion. On the other hand, the increase in the number of dams in watersheds traps a great portion of sediment fluxes, which do not reach the sea in the same amount, nor at the same quality, with consequences on coastal geomorphodynamics. This book is dedicated to studies on sediment fluxes from continental areas to coastal areas, as well as observation, modeling, and impact analysis at different scales from watershed slopes to the outputs of large river basins. This book is concentrated on a number of keywords: “erosion” and “sediment transport”, “model” and “practice”, and “change”. The keywords are briefly discussed with respect to the relevant literature. The contributions in this book address observations and models based on laboratory and field data, allowing researchers to make use of such resources in practice under changing conditions.

Of Related Interest Fluid Mechanics through Problems R.J. Garde This book is an outcome of author’s over thirty years of teaching Fluid Mechanics to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The book is written with the purpose that, through this book, student should appreciate the strength and limitations of the theory, and also its potential for application in solving a variety of engineering problems of practical importance. It makes available to the students, appearing for diploma and undergraduate courses in Civil, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering, a book which briefly introduces the necessary theory, followed by a set of descriptive/objective questions. In seventeen chapters the book covers the broad areas of fluid properties, kinematics, dynamics, dimensional analysis, laminar flow, boundary layer theory, turbulent flow, forces on immersed bodies, open channel flow, compressible and unsteady flows, and pumps and turbines. Mechanics of Sediment Transportation and Alluvial Stream Problems R.J. Garde and K.G. Ranga Raju This is the second edition of the book which was first published in 1977. The first part of the book covering eight chapters is devoted to a discussion of the fundamental processes in the mechanics of sediment transportation, such as sediment properties, bedform and resistance analysis and sediment transport. The remaining nine chapters forming the second part deal with applied problems in alluvial streams such as sampling, stable channel design, aggradation, degradation, plan-form variation, river training, sediment control, sediment transport through pipes, etc. The book takes a balanced view of theory and practice and will, therefore, be invaluable to researchers, planners and designers.
