This book reports on a novel concept of mechanism transitions for the design of highly scalable and adaptive publish/subscribe systems. First, it introduces relevant mechanisms for location-based filtering and locality-aware dissemination of events based on a thorough review of the state-of-the-art. This is followed by a detailed description of the design of a transition-enabled publish/subscribe system that enables seamless switching between mechanisms during runtime. Lastly, the proposed concepts are evaluated within the challenging context of location-based mobile applications. The book assesses in depth the performance and cost of transition execution, highlighting the impact of the proposed state transfer mechanism and the potential of coexisting transition-enabled mechanisms.

Engineering Interactive Systems (EIS) 2008 was an international event combining the 2nd working conference on Human-Centred Software Engineering (HCSE 2008) and the 7th International Workshop on TAsk MOdels and DIAgrams (TAMODIA 2008). HCSE is a working conference that brings together researchers and practitioners - terested in strengthening the scientific foundations of user interface design and examining the relationship between software engineering and human-computer interaction and how to strengthen user-centred design as an essential part of so- ware engineering processes. As a working conference, substantial time is devoted to the open and lively discussion of papers. TAMODIA is an international workshop on models, such as task models and visual representations in Human-Computer Interaction (one of the most widely used notations in this area, ConcurTaskTrees, was developed in the town that hosted this year’s event). It focuses on notations used to describe user tasks ranging from textual and graphical forms to interactive, multimodal and multimedia tools.

This Festschrift is dedicated to Ralf Steinmetz on the occasion of his retirement. The honoree is a full professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany, where he leads the Multimedia Communications lab. He has supervised over 105 successful PhD students and remains committed to his vision of achieving “seamless adaptive multimedia communications.” He has been widely recognized for his contributions to the field, prestigious accolades include an Honorary Doctorate from RWTH Aachen University and a Chair of Excellence at the University Carlos III de Madrid. He is also a fellow of several esteemed professional organizations, including the IEEE, the ACM, the GI, and the VDE ITG. A pioneer in multimedia and networking, Ralf Steinmetz’s work opened up further research in topics such as distributed systems, e-learning, and serious games. The contributions in this volume reflect his huge impact on research, technical developments, and careers in the areas of multimedia and networking: in Part I, the chapters discuss past research results and their impact, often applying a survey style; in Part II, researchers present current results; and in Part III, the chapters give an outlook on future research directions.

"Pub/Sub Systems and Message-Driven Architectures" "Pub/Sub Systems and Message-Driven Architectures" is a comprehensive and authoritative resource for architects, developers, and engineers seeking an in-depth understanding of modern messaging systems. The book begins by laying out the foundational concepts of publish/subscribe architectures, exploring their evolution, core paradigms, and critical distinctions between message and event semantics. It delves into advanced design patterns, techniques for decoupling system components, and both synchronous and asynchronous communications, equipping readers with the conceptual tools required to build robust, scalable solutions. Moving beyond the fundamentals, the book navigates the diverse landscape of protocols, broker architectures, and implementation strategies. Readers gain valuable insights into the mechanics of topic-based and content-based systems, the nuances of push and pull delivery models, and how to ensure guarantees around message delivery, ordering, and consistency. Dedicated chapters address the complexities of distributed systems, including scalability, fault tolerance, consensus algorithms, and strategies for global and multi-cloud deployments. Coupled with in-depth analysis of monitoring, observability, and reliability, this work presents both the theoretical underpinnings and pragmatic approaches essential to high-throughput, reliable messaging infrastructures. To bridge theory and practice, "Pub/Sub Systems and Message-Driven Architectures" concludes with real-world applications, case studies, and guidance for future-proofing message-driven systems. The book reveals proven integration patterns for fintech, IoT, smart cities, AI/ML pipelines, and regulatory compliance, alongside emerging trends in cloud-native and serverless environments. By covering advanced integration, performance tuning, security, and operational best practices, this resource stands as an indispensable guide for anyone building or maintaining complex, distributed message-driven architectures in today's fast-evolving technological landscape.
