Western culture is a culture of hope. This book explains how great hopes can be kept afloat in the face of discouraging experiences. The book analyzes how managers and other organization members can maintain their hope for the rational organization, even though they and others have failed to attain it. Hope gives rise to stability. There has been a long tradition in organization theory of questioning the realism and usefulness of the rational ideal, but hope keeps this ideal alive. By applying various "mechanisms of hope," managers and others can continue to hope for the rational organization and continue their attempts at reform.

An inspiring and profoundly enlightening exploration of one doctor’s discovery of how hope can change the course of illness Since the time of the ancient Greeks, human beings have believed that hope is essential to life. Now, in this groundbreaking book, Harvard Medical School professor and New Yorker staff writer Jerome Groopman shows us why. The search for hope is most urgent at the patient’s bedside. The Anatomy of Hope takes us there, bringing us into the lives of people at pivotal moments when they reach for and find hope--or when it eludes their grasp. Through these intimate portraits, we learn how to distinguish true hope from false, why some people feel they are undeserving of it, and whether we should ever abandon our search. Can hope contribute to recovery by changing physical well-being? To answer this hotly debated question, Groopman embarked on an investigative journey to cutting-edge laboratories where researchers are unraveling an authentic biology of hope. There he finds a scientific basis for understanding the role of this vital emotion in the outcome of illness. Here is a book that offers a new way of thinking about hope, with a message for all readers, not only patients and their families. "We are just beginning to appreciate hope’s reach," Groopman writes, "and have not defined its limits. I see hope as the very heart of healing."

To master Organic Chemistry, it is essential to master mechanism. This book uses a novel approach to help you better understand the mechanisms of 80 common organic reactions. Each one is color coded so that you can clearly see the changes that take place during the reaction. The electrons involved in the mechanism are color coded, as are the arrows originating from those electrons and the bonds or lone pairs formed by them in the intermediates and product. As a result, you can trace specific pairs of electrons through an entire transformation. The description of what each mechanistic arrow means is color coded correspondingly so that it is easy to match up the text with the relevant portion of a reaction diagram.

What is the scientific status and the "truth value" of the concept of defense mechanisms? Among contemporary psychologists, three types of answers to this question may be expected. Some would wholeheartedly endorse the theoretical, clinical, and research value of this notion; others would reject it outright. Between these two extremes, a large number of observers, perhaps the majority, would suspend their judgment. Their attitude, compounded of hope and doubt, would capitalize on defense as an interesting and promising concept. At the same time, these psy chologists would express skepticism and disappointment over its clinical limitations, theoretical ambiguity, and research failures. The present volume is primarily addressed to the audience of hopeful skeptics-those who have not given up on the notion of defense, yet have been frustrated by the difficulties of incorporating it into the modern, streamlined structure of psychology. To this end, we have brought together theoretical and empirical contributions germane to defense together with reports about their applications to clinical and personality assessment, especially in relation to psychopathology, psychosomatics, and psycho therapeutic intervention.

This book offers a multidisciplinary approach to the Dispute Settlement Mechanism (DSM) by bringing together contributions from legal scholars and political scientists. Most of the authors belong to a tightly knit legal epistemic community, trained at the University of São Paulo and at the top-ranked research and policy centers on WTO law in Europe. Presenting a novel and unique perspective on the DSM, it provides an analysis of current themes at the heart of the WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism through the lenses of scholars with a “developing country” perspective. Focusing on assessment, substance, and process, it presents a three-fold approach to the analysis and offers a singular contribution to the scholarly literature on the WTO. The book discusses the topic from the viewpoint of individuals deeply involved in the scholarly production as well as the daily operation of the mechanism. The contributors include academics in the fields of international economic law and political science, diplomats, individuals engaged in legal private practice, and individuals affiliated with the WTO as well as WTO-related think tanks. The result is a balanced perspective on pressing issues that have arisen and that are likely to remain at the center of the scholarly and policy debate for years to come.

What is a Human Being? When we think of ourselves, we think primarily of our subjective sense of self, our Consciousness, and how does it relate to our Body? Are Mind and Body one and the same thing, Monism, or two separate things, Dualism. This is the "Mind-Body Problem." It is the scientific question of how Consciousness is manifest in the structure of Brain. It is the moral questions regarding abortion and end of life. The answers require an explanation in terms of physics, metaphysics, and history. It is the discussion inside those explanatory fields that has built the gulf between popular intuitive Dualism and the expert Monism. This work presents a clear scientific Dualist model, Mind and Body, as two separate things to answer the question, 'What is a Human Being?'
