Since Greek antiquity, the ‘barbarian’ captivates the Western imaginary and operates as the antipode against which self-proclaimed civilized groups define themselves. Therefore, the study of the cultural history of barbarism is a simultaneous exploration of the shifting contours of European identity. This two-volume co-authored study explores the history of the concept ‘barbarism’ from the 18th century to the present and illuminates its foundational role in modern European and Western identity. It constitutes an original comparative, interdisciplinary exploration of the concept’s modern European and Western history, with emphasis on the role of literature in the concept’s shifting functions. Critically responding to the contemporary popularity of the term ‘barbarian' in political rhetoric and the media, and its violent, exclusionary workings, the study contributes to a historically grounded understanding of this figure’s past and contemporary uses. It combines overviews with detailed analyses of representative works of literature, art, film, philosophy, political and cultural theory, in which “barbarism” figures prominently.

The Astral Plane written by Teresa Dovalpage and has been published by University of New Orleans Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with Fiction categories.

In her new compilation of short fiction The Astral Plane: Stories of Cuba, the Southwest and Beyond, Teresa Dovalpage offers a diversity characters in the midst of decisions and transitions. In the presence of South Indian Yogis, New Mexican Santeros, Afro-Cuban Orishas, Edgar Allen Poe, The Beatles and La Llorona, the author details moments in the lives of Cubans, Nuevo Mexicanos and Anglo-Americans. The stories are sometimes comical and often tragic but always engaging. In each one, Dovalpage reminds us that any choice we make, from deciding to leave the country, to walking around the block to engaging in a conversation with a total stranger, could become momentous. In the blink of an eye, the insignificant turns historic. Although each story is self contained and can be read independently, it is when they are read together that they are most affective, unsettling, comic and heartfelt. Characters, storylines, and motifs reappear from one tale to the next, informing and enriching each other. While every story is distinct, these protagonists, who are from varied cultural and economic backgrounds, share common struggles as they stumble in search for a way to escape or a place to land, to live, to be who they are. There are no heroes in these stories but they are not villains either, much like in everyday life. Oddly, that is what is most comforting, for lack of a better word, about The Astral Plane: Stories of Cuba, the Southwest and Beyond, at least for this reader. Dovalpage's characters exude an unapologetic normalcy in their flaws that even toothless false prophets, calculating serial killers, conniving prostitutes, and scheming mothers-in-law become endearing in the end. (Carolina Caballero LatinoLA, February 2, 2012) The stories are thoroughly Cuban, original, delightful, and unexpected. In this cohesive collection, Ms. Dovalpage’s prodigious talent takes us on a dazzling journey of high drama, whimsical imagery, nail-biting suspense, and laugh-out-loud hilarity. Along the way she lays bare the reality of life in Cuba and totally debunks the myths of the Castro Revolution. One favorite passage includes a lyrical, evocative description of El Malecón that made me weep with longing for the sights, sounds, and smells of that drive; a paragraph later I erupted in laughter at a character’s offhand comment. This savory collection is certain to become a favorite read, highly recommended. (February 4, 2012) Teresa Dovalpage’s latest collection of short stories The Astral Plane features a set of stories where the characters have a tenuous connection to each other. The stories showcase how the Cuban Hispanic diaspora spread with contacts with former relatives, escapees via the rafts, and with contacts with visitors and universities that can travel to Cuba with ease. Thus, stories take place partly in Cuba, in Miami, and in Albuquerque. Throughout the tales, the change brought about by Fidel Castro seep out in details about the way people live, the food they eat, the political pressures to conform, the desire for US Cash and lifestyle and the turn to the Santeria religion. Teresa Dovalpage constructs her stories with a heavy dose of metaphor that is artfully shared by taking a distant point of view and by carefully constructing her plots. The plots unfold in a chatty fashion where you learn about the people that surround a character, their family, their friends, and their style of life. Readers will enjoy the unusual mix of character types, settings, and plots that can introduce them to a politically strong minority population in the United States. They make a potent case for democracy and capitalism. (Sheri Fresonke Harper The Compulsive Reader, March 2012) The Astral Plane is the latest book by Cuban author Teresa Dovalpage. Ziva Sahl describes the stories in Dovalpage's collection as, 'thoroughly Cuban, original, delightful, and unexpected.' I had the chance to read the book and can only say that The Astral Plane is another fine accomplishment by one of our most talented Latina writers these days. Argonauts written by Kevin Kneupper and has been published by Kevin Kneupper this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-28 with categories.

Thousands of readers love Argonauts, calling it a “fantastic tale” and “clever, rich, and highly entertaining.” It’s a new twist on an old myth. It’s the story of Jason, a wealthy son of privilege who longs to be a warrior. His father’s death means Jason can finally join the Argonauts, an elite group of warriors who’ve overhauled their genetic code. It’s the story of Medea, a scientist who toils away in a lab changing people’s genes. She gives the warriors their powers, but she never gets an ounce of credit. And now she’s found herself fighting alongside them. And it’s the story of an adventure turned suicide mission, all for the sake of a crown. Readers love the twists on ancient Greek mythology. The story of Jason and Medea is thousands of years old. It was once the subject of some of the greatest plays and poems in human history, but the myth has died away in recent years. We remember Hercules, but whatever happened to Jason? Argonauts retells the old story in a near-future science fiction setting, with future technologies replacing ancient magic. One Goodreads reviewer wrote: “I love mythical retellings and this is certainly one of the most innovative…. It shouldn’t work, but it does. The ancient Greek names and themes actually seem to feed perfectly into the world….” Another reviewer said she “loved the spinning of the classic tale into something futuristic and different!” Even if you’re not a mythology expert, you’ll find yourself recognizing pieces of the myths. Maybe you’re a Game of Thrones fan who’ll learn where the Harpies came from, or where Cersei Lannister got her name. Or maybe you’re a Harry Potter fan who’ll learn about the myths that inspired characters like J.K. Rowling’s Amycus Carrow. These authors loved the myth, and you might, too. Readers love the science fiction premise. You’ve heard the stories in the news. Jobs being taken by robots. The corporate elite revealed to be more and more corrupt. Extremists all over social media. Strange technologies that do things you couldn’t imagine. Where will it all lead? Argonauts is a look at the future through the lens of the past. Greek mythology was full of monsters. But the monsters of the future don’t come from a magic potion. They’ve changed their genes, and they aren’t entirely human anymore. Sci fi fans are raving about the book. One reader called it a “sci fi gem.” Another said it was “reminiscent of Asimov” and “very well done.” And a third called it “a welcome addition to the reading shelf of fans of sci fi.” Even readers who aren’t exactly nerds have found themselves enjoying it. As a Goodreads reviewer put it: “I really enjoyed the book, it’s not a book I would normally pick up and read. But branching out this time certainly paid off!” Readers love the romance. One of the most famous romances in history was between Jason and Medea - a Greek warrior marked for death, and the sorceress who saved him. It was a passion inspired by the gods, and a love doomed to end in tragedy - at least in the old myths. There’s no tragedy in this book, but the love story is still there, and reviewers love “the chemistry between Jason and Medea.” A strong, commanding warrior, sent off to die in a foreign land. A sorceress who starts out as his enemy, but finds herself helping him instead as she falls deeper and deeper in love. It was a passionate love, the kind that inspired a princess to give up everything she cared about to save a hero from a foreign land. In Argonauts, Medea is a scientist, not a sorceress - but there isn’t that much difference in the end. Give Argonauts a try today. You’ll experience the myths. You’ll wonder about the future. And you’ll fall in love with Jason and Medea, all for less than the price of a movie. Join thousands of fans and buy your copy today.

Jason And Medea written by Matthew L. Hunter and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Drama categories.

While the ending of the Golden Fleece myth, Medea's killing of her beloved children, is well known, her story and her reasoning are not. She can be understood through her deeds and words, though she may not be forgiven for her act. Jason, the hero of the Argo who wrested the Golden Fleece from a tyrant at the end of world, in this work is revealed as a man with flaws. Jason and Medea fully explores the ancient Greek tragedy, following the story line and philosophical trails. The gaps in the ancient telling are filled with imaginative invention without the aid of supernatural forces. Every baby boomer has seen the 60's movie Jason and the Argonauts with the animated harpies, skeleton warriors and bronze giant. Few know the details of the complete adventure. The telling of this tale relies upon the visualization prowess of the modern reader to examine the human condition. This tale has something more than mere adventure to hold the reader's attention. Great events propel the action. Men commit murder, steal, embark on paths of war, and whisper deceits. A woman acts both selflessly for love and sacrifices everything for it. Through language and dialogue, violence is revealed as monstrous and that love may be too. The voices of women articulate great sentiments and truths. Memory and loyalty are exposed as weak foundations for trust. At the beginning and then finally, the gods, the Fates and human responsibility all take center stage in Jason and Medea.
