This book results from a symposium organized by Genesys Network, which took place on April 29th, 2015, in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. The organizers invited contributors to think about the concept of power in the context of the evolving international system, and what it implied for the study of the concept in IR academic field. Indeed, if the end of the Cold War was characterized by a "unipolar moment" as defined by Krauthammer in 1991, this period is starting to come to an end. While the United States remains arguably a global superpower, its position is more and more disputed by other actors. Likewise, new centers of power have emerged. Today's world is complex and transitional, characterized by both short- and long-term challenges; interactions among these powers remain to be apprehended and understood. In the last decade, we have also observed an economic and partially political shift or redistribution of power from the “West to the Rest” on the classical state power chessboard. The beginning of the 21st century thus constitutes an important challenge for the super- and emerging or resurgent powers. The new global state of affairs is characterized by conditions that are more complex than in the past. In these circumstances and in the face of these worldwide trends, the concept of power has evolved and the need to redefine or think the concept has become a necessity. The present book thus aims at presenting the diversity of views on the concept of power but also, perhaps more importantly, their complementarity.

Over the past several years, the Thai popular culture landscape has radically transformed due to the emergence of “Boys Love” (BL) soap operas which celebrate the love between handsome young men. Boys Love Media in Thailand: Celebrity, Fans, and Transnational Asian Queer Popular Culture is the first book length study of this increasingly significant transnational pop culture phenomenon. Drawing upon six years of ethnographic research, the book reveals BL's impacts on depictions of same-sex desire in Thai media culture and the resultant mainstreaming of queer romance through new forms of celebrity and participatory fandom. The author explores how the rise of BL has transformed contemporary Thai consumer culture, leading to heterosexual female fans of male celebrities who perform homoeroticism becoming the main audience to whom Thai pop culture is geared. Through the case study of BL, this book thus also investigates how Thai media is responding to broader regional trends across Asia where the economic potentials of female and queer fans are becoming increasingly important. Baudinette ultimately argues that the center of queer cultural production in Asia has shifted from Japan to Thailand, investigating both the growing international fandom of Thailand's BL series as well as the influence of international investment into the development of these media. The book particularly focuses on specific case studies of the fandom for Thai BL celebrity couples in Thailand, China, the Philippines, and Japan to explore how BL series have transformed each of these national contexts' queer consumer cultures.

Ironically, as telecommunications technology—the embodiment of modernity—advances, bringing people in different nations into more direct contact during conflict situations, traditional cultural factors become increasingly important as differing ways of thinking and acting collide. The mass media can be seen as a factor in the creation of international conflict; they also, claim many scholars, are the key to control and resolution of those problems. Whichever side of the coin one chooses to look at—mass communication as cause or cure of conflict—there is no doubt that the news media are no longer peripheral players on the global scene; they are important participants whose organizational patterns of behavior, values, and motivations must be taken into account in understanding national and international conflict. In this volume, a distinguished group of authors explores the variety of ways the news media—newspapers, radio, and television—are involved in conflict situations.
