This issue compromises a selection of papers presented at the Inaugural International Media Ethics Conference held in Canberra Australia in July 2002. The papers selected are representative of some of the central themes of the conference, such as managing the newsroom and editorial independence, limits on press freedom, ethical standards and credibility, investigative journalism, and commercial constraints on the media. The first paper argues for a media ethics regime that employs an ethical risk management approach to media ethics not unlike that employed routinely in assessing financial risk and strategies for minimizing that risk in business and other institutional corporations. The next paper proposes that although a good character is relevant to journalism the formation of character nevertheless is "a process that requires a conducive environment, which is to say, an environment shaped by regulations." The reflection on the inherent conflict between the media's function as providers of information to the public and their function as corporate businesses whose primary aim is to make money for their shareholders is the theme of the third paper. Finally, the last paper gives preference to the notion of autonomy over that of truth.

Ethics And The Australian News Media written by John Hurst and has been published by Palgrave MacMillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Journalistic ethics categories.

The clash between the public right to know and public safety is just one of the fundamental conflicts raised by Hurst and White in this, the first definitive study of ethics in the Australian news media. Hurst and White explore the concept of ethical conduct, apply it to journalism, then draw on a wealth of local examples where the news media's conduct was challenged. They examine the attempts to codify the principles - from the policies of press councils to the journalists' own codes of ethics - and show where these are inadequate, muddled or honoured in the breach. They put forward some provocative ideas for reform.

This book offers an introduction to the key legal and ethical topics confronting Australian journalists and strategic communicators both at home and internationally and offers a suite of reflective techniques for navigating them. It starts by positioning morals, ethics, and the law in their historical and philosophical frameworks by tracing the evolution of free expression and professional media ethics. Media law and ethics are then contextualized in their modern international human rights framework. Readers are equipped with a skill set for reflecting on the law and ethics of professional media dilemmas – including mindful reflection, the Potter Box, journaling, concept mapping, and discussion. Such approaches are then applied to key topic areas, including free expression; reputation; confidentiality; privacy; justice; intellectual property; national security; discrimination and harassment; and conflicted interests. Each is examined in terms of its philosophical underpinnings, relationship to human rights, professional ethical context, international examples, legal principles, key Australian laws, legal cases, and strategies for applying reflective practice techniques. It concludes on a confident note – imploring communicators to engage in constructive and mindful strategic communication with the authority and confidence that results from a working knowledge of media law and ethics. This handbook is for professional communicators and students in all fields, but particularly in journalism, public relations, corporate communication, media relations, and marketing.

For journalists, students and all who think about the role of the media and its ethics. Includes case studies for classes and groups.'With their rapid technological changes, increasing pervasiveness, and focus on controversy and on the immediate, the media present a fast moving target, hard to pin down and examine. Alan Nichols and Jane Hendtlass have succeeded in doing so with great systematic skill, and have unearthed the pleasing answer for practitioners that yes, the media do have ethics. This book helps journalists and media consumers to think about what those ethics are - and should be' (Rowan Callick).
