Since the publication of Th. Charland's Artes Praedicandi in 1936, several significant studies of the rise and development of Arts of Preaching have appeared. There are, however, a few aspects of both classical and medieval traditions surrounding these artes which have not been featured in earlier critiques and which contribute to an appreciation of the form, namely: the changing concept of the word "ars", the dialectical/logical emphasis of the schoolmen, and most importantly, the great pastoral movement of the high Middle Ages which can be posited as the ultimate impetus for an art's composition. The latter phenomenon separates the artes praedicandi from the artes dictaminis and poeticae and gives perspective on the shaping influences in preaching tradition. Finally, the specifically Higden material focuses attention on his singularly well-made manual for the construction of a thematic sermon, the Ars componendi sermones.

In considering the construction of medieval sermons, the term 'construction' has many meanings. Those studied here range from questions about sermon composition with the help of artes praedicandi or model collections to a more abstract investigation of the mental construction of the concepts of sermon and preacher. Sermons from a range of European countries, written both in Latin and vernaculars, are subjected to a broad variety of analyses. The approach demonstrates the vitality of this sub-discipline. Most of the essays are more occupied with literary and philological problems than with the religious content of the sermons. While many focus on vernacular sermons, the Latin cultural and literary background is always considered and shows how vernacular preaching was in part based on a more learned Latin culture. The collection testifies both to the increasing esteem of the study of vernacular sermons, and to a revival in the study of all those things contained in a preacher's 'workshop', ranging from rhetorical invention, medieval library holdings and study-aids, through to factors that are crucial for the successful delivery of the sermon, such as the choice of language, mnemonic devices and addressing the audience. The interdisciplinary approach remains ever-present, not only in the diversity of the academic disciplines represented, but also within individual essays. The volume is based on a conference held in Stockholm, 7-9 October 2004.

Medieval Christian Literary Imagery written by Robert Earl Kaske and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988-01-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

If a reader of Chaucer suspects that an echo of a biblical verse may somehow depend for its meaning on traditional commentary on that verse, how does he or she go about finding the relevant commentaries? If one finds the word 'fire' in a context that suggests resonances beyond the literal, how does that reader go about learning what the traditional figurative meanings of fire were? It was to the solution of such difficulties that R.E. Kaske addressed himself in this volume setting out and analyzing the major repositories of traditional material: biblical exegesis, the liturgy, hymns and sequences, sermons and homilies, the pictorial arts, mythography, commentaries on individual authors, and a number of miscellaneous themes. An appendix deals with medieval encyclopedias. Kaske created a tool that will revolutionize research in its designated field: the discovery and interpretation of the traditional meanings reflected in medieval Christian imagery.
